Mark Hobson killed his girlfriend Claire Sanderson on 11 July 2004 in their flat on Millfield Drive, Camblesforth, by striking her on the head seventeen times with a hammer and strangling her. On 17 July 2004, he lured her twin sister Diane Sanderson to the flat, tortured her with a razor and scissors, sexually assaulted her, hogtied her, bit off her left nipple, and strangled her. On 18 July 2004, he murdered elderly couple James and Joan Britton at their home in Strensall, York. The murders were premeditated, with notes showing plans to kill more victims including his girlfriend's parents and ex-wife's parents.
Pleaded guilty to four counts of murder. Judge Mr. Justice Gregson recommended he should never be released, stating 'the enormity of what you've done is beyond words. The damage you've done is incalculable.'
