Martin Bell fatally attacked Gemma Simpson at his Harrogate flat on May 5, 2000. He repeatedly struck her with a hammer during an argument, which he claimed involved a perceived threat to his children. He then stabbed her, drowned her in a bath by filling it with water and tying her hands, dismembered her body after several days, and buried it. Gemma was reported as a missing person for 14 years until Bell confessed at Scarborough Police Station.

On 28 April 2014, during a Spanish lesson at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Halton Moor, Leeds, William Cornick, aged 15, stabbed his teacher Ann Maguire seven times in the back and neck with a 21 cm knife, severing her jugular vein. He had planned the murder for three years due to a deep-seated grudge and hatred, intended to kill her four days earlier, offered a friend £10 to murder her, and planned to kill two other teachers. He chased her into the corridor but was prevented from further attack by Susan Francis. He brought whisky to celebrate.
Verdict guilty on one count of murder. No remorse shown. Judge lifted restrictions on naming for deterrent effect. Appeal against sentence dismissed in January 2015.

The offences occurred within a couple of months of each other while he was on bail with a condition not to contact the victim. He continued to see her despite the condition. Prior conviction in 1990 for common assault against an ex-partner.
