CCTV footage showed Abdulla entering the arcade, searching the sleeping man, and taking items including his phone, keys, and credit card. As the man woke, Abdulla helped him to his feet and followed him over some distance. He then threatened the man with a knife and raped him near the Merrion Centre, before attempting to rape him in Woodhouse Moor Park. Abdulla was identified via CCTV, arrested on February 12, 2023, and later admitted the attack to police.

He claimed to be drunk and angry during interview.

The offences reflect abuse against 12 further victims who were aged between nine and 15 at the time.
Pleaded guilty to 43 counts of child sexual abuse, including 23 x indecent assault, 8 x rape, 1 x attempting to engage in sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 13, 3 x sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 years, 4 x indecency with a child, 2 x sexual assault of a child under 13, 2 x sexual activity with a child. This will run consecutive to his existing 24-year sentence. Minimum of 24 years to serve.

After drinking, Clay persuaded the boy to his flat on the Armouries, locked him in, and repeatedly raped and assaulted him over two days, including strangling, hitting with an oven tray, and forcing compliance by referencing prior abuse. The boy escaped and later reported the incidents. Clay's phone revealed indecent images of children and the victim. While under investigation, Clay fled to the Dominican Republic but was arrested upon return. On bail, he targeted an 18-year-old boy, luring him to the Bridge pub in Leeds where he sexually assaulted him in the toilets despite protests. Clay denied offences but was convicted after trial.

Rashawn Bedeau, 28, of Arley Street, Leeds, fled the UK with Ellis Thornton on January 31, 2023, to Barbados, knowing he was wanted in connection with a firearms discharge incident in Lister Lane, Halifax, on January 2023, where a window was shot out. She continued to financially support his lifestyle for six months until July 2023 as he moved through Suriname and Mexico.
Helped Ellis Thornton flee the country and financially supported him for six months despite knowing he was wanted for a serious offence. Detective Sergeant Andrew Ellis hopes the sentence sends a message to those hindering police enquiries.
Ibrar Mehrban
Grievous Bodily Harm and Section 47 Assault *

Ibrar Mehrban, 37, from Batley, assaulted a woman in her 30s in the street around 1.30am on July 1, 2025, before continuing the attack inside a garage. A man in his 20s overheard the assault, investigated, and opened the garage door. Mehrban hit him with a brick, knocking him to the floor and attacking him further, causing serious head injuries to the man and head and facial injuries to the woman. Both victims required hospital treatment. Mehrban was arrested at the scene and charged that day.
Found guilty of grievous bodily harm and section 47 assault. Remanded in custody until trial. Police praised the courage of both victims.
Kai Helliwell

Kai Helliwell, 25, of Whitwell Drive, Elland, was arrested in May 2025 while driving in the Fixby area of Huddersfield. Cocaine worth between £5,396 and £9,516 was seized from his vehicle.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and conspiracy to supply cocaine. Worked with Uzair Hamid.
Uzair Hamid

Uzair Hamid, 30, of Deveron Grove, Huddersfield, was arrested at his home in May 2025 as part of an investigation into a suspected drugs supply network in Kirklees. He was caught with ketamine with an estimated street value of between £511,000 and £1,460,000.
Admitted a number of drug offences including being concerned in the supply of ketamine, possession with intent to supply ketamine, possession with intent to supply cannabis, conspiring to supply cocaine and being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug.
Steven Lewsley

Steven Lewsley, granted Power of Attorney over his uncle with severe dementia in December 2021 along with his sister, stole £68,130 from two of his uncle's bank accounts starting from that time. He used the money to fund his gambling addiction, withdrawing £200 to £400 daily in cash, as well as spending on fuel, car parts from Euro Car Parts, and items from Wickes. The theft was discovered in autumn 2024 when the uncle's social worker noted suspicious transactions in bank statements from September 2023 to September 2024, including excessive unrelated spending and cash withdrawals, leading to concerns about unpaid care home fees. Leeds City Council conducted a financial assessment, and the matter was reported to police. Lewsley was arrested on April 5, 2025, and admitted the withdrawals were for gambling during his interview.
Pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. Suffered from depression and gambling addiction. Expressed remorse. Previous convictions for shop theft, handling stolen goods, and theft from 1985. Mitigating factors included mental health issues and support from wife and employer.
Austin Reed
Criminal damage – recklessly endangering life *

On October 21, 2023, in the Upper Wortley area of Leeds, Austin Reed locked a woman and three children inside an address on Roderick Street and threatened to blow up the house. He deliberately damaged a boiler, causing a gas leak that led to the evacuation of neighbouring properties. West Yorkshire Police were called at 9.37pm. Reed barricaded himself inside, and after failed negotiations, entry was forced around 11.30pm. He was taken to hospital and then custody. A gas engineer confirmed intentional damage to the boiler.
Pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal damage – recklessly endangering life. Sergeant Clementine Brown noted that Reed’s actions put himself and others, including children, in serious danger, leading to a large-scale emergency services operation.
Daniel Giles
Conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation *

Daniel Giles, aged 51, of Jacob Drive, Coventry, co-devised and operated a 'pension liberation' scam from offices in Wakefield and Leeds between 2013 and 2015. With accomplices, he produced misleading brochures and marketing materials to convince 84 victims to transfer £3,701,813.92 in pension savings into bank accounts he operated, promising tax-free early access and safe investments with cashback incentives. The funds were stolen through fake transactions, defrauding HMRC of £700,000 in owed tax, while victims faced up to 55% tax penalties. Giles employed 'introducers' to mislead investors and lied to legitimate pension companies to acquire the money without suspicion. He also evaded over £1m in personal taxes from 2008 to 2014.
Disqualified from being a company director for 12 years. Found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and conspiracy to cheat the public revenue; admitted separate tax evasion charge relating to over £1m in unpaid personal tax from April 2008 to April 2014.
Sibtain Hussain

Sibtain Hussain, 32, from Bradford, targeted over 200 international applicants to UK universities by demanding payments for proof of ‘financial capability’, ‘student services’, and ‘accommodation deposits’. He created multiple phone numbers, email addresses, aliases and bank accounts to facilitate the scheme. In 2018, unauthorised access was gained to Lancaster University’s internal computer system and applicant data was stolen. Hussain, who began studying at the university in 2017, gained access to the stolen data and used it to perpetrate the fraud. He used the information to persistently target individuals by phone and email demanding sums up to £3,200. Over £48,000 was sent by 23 students as a result of Hussain’s efforts, but a large majority of payments were blocked by banks. The fraud had the potential to generate more than £493,000 in illegal profits.
Initially denied the charges but later pleaded guilty. Following a National Crime Agency investigation.

Louis Watson

On October 24, 2025, at around 8.30am, Louis Watson, 26, of no fixed abode, approached a woman on Kildare Street in Leeds after she had spotted him loitering at Crown Point retail park while she was in a Costa coffee shop. He demanded her bag while on a bicycle, claiming he had a knife. She handed over her bag containing a laptop, purse, bank cards, and driving licence. The bank card was attempted to be used in a nearby shop but was cancelled. Items were never recovered. Watson was identified by a PCSO from a photo the woman took earlier. The victim suffered anxiety, migraines, prescribed medication, fear of going out alone, changed routes, and took time off work near the incident location.
Admitted robbery. Opportunistic offence, short-lived. Suffered paranoia from drug use, traumatic childhood with exposure to gang violence from young age. No evidence of mental illness.
Kieran Smith

Kieran Smith, 22 and of Highfield Avenue, Grimsby, was found guilty following a trial at Leeds Crown Court of rape of a girl under 13, assault of a girl under 13 by penetration and causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
Found guilty following a trial. Made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting unsupervised contact with children under 18.
