On February 1, 2025, at around 3.45am, Harry Mason, 30, of The Mallards, Southport, was driving a silver Mercedes on Roe Lane, Southport, when a police officer noticed it crashing into the kerb and signalled for it to pull over. Mason sped away, leading a high-speed chase exceeding 90mph through residential areas with a 30mph limit, including lifting off the ground over a hill at Norwood Avenue. He continued onto Manchester Road and Alexandra Road without slowing, lost sight of police on Albany Road, then drove onto the Promenade, crashed into a 120-year-old Grade II-listed Victorian bandstand (causing £90,000 damage), and plunged into the Marine Lake. Mason falsely reported the car stolen to police, claiming his phone, keys, and money were also taken, but confessed after his girlfriend challenged him upon recognising the submerged vehicle from social media. He was arrested and admitted responsibility.
