About these terms
CourtSentences.co.uk is operated by Search Ventures Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 10588553 ("we", "us"). These terms apply to everyone who uses this website. By using it you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
If you are using the site as a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.
What we provide
The site is a free public record of sentencing outcomes in courts in England and Wales, compiled from published media reports and other publicly available sources. How we compile and check it is described in our Editorial and Safeguards Policy. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the site, including individual records, at any time.
How you may use it
You may read the site and refer to it for your own information, research and reporting. You may share links to any page.
What you must not do
You must not use the site, or information from it:
- to harass, intimidate, threaten, shame or harm any person named on it, or their family;
- to make decisions about anyone's employment, housing, credit, insurance or anything similar. The site is not a substitute for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check;
- to identify, or help others to identify, anyone whose identity is protected by law, a reporting restriction or an anonymity order, including by combining information from different sources;
- to build a file, profile or database about a particular person, or to republish records in a way that presents them as anyone's criminal history;
- to copy, scrape or collect records by automated means, except for search engines indexing pages in line with our robots.txt;
- in any way that is unlawful, or that interferes with the site, its security or other people's use of it;
- to impersonate anyone, or to send us requests in someone else's name without their authority.
Our content and database
The outcome of a public court hearing is a matter of public record. Our selection and arrangement of records, the text we write, and the design of the site belong to us. The collection of records is a database in which we have invested substantially, and it is protected by database right and copyright. You may not extract or reuse all or a substantial part of it, or repeatedly extract smaller parts of it, without our written permission.
The reports our records come from belong to their publishers. Their rights in those reports are theirs, and our records link to them so readers can see the original.
If you contact us or send a removal request, we use what you send only to deal with your message or request, as described in our Privacy Policy. Please make sure it is accurate, and do not send us more personal information about other people than you need to.
Accuracy and reliance
We take care over accuracy, but records report what was published and can be affected by errors in the original report or by later events such as an appeal. Please read our Disclaimer, which explains the limits of the information on this site. If you need to rely on information about a case, check it with the court concerned.
Links to other sites
The site links to reports and other websites that we do not control. We are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability or privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement.
Our responsibility to you
We provide the site with reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that was not reasonably foreseeable, or for loss caused by using the site in a way these terms do not allow.
The site is provided for private use. If you use it for business purposes, we are not liable to you for loss of profit, revenue, business or opportunity, and you agree to indemnify us against claims by others arising from your breach of the section headed "What you must not do".
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under the law of England and Wales.
If you break these terms
We may block or restrict access to the site for anyone who breaks these terms, and we may take legal action where appropriate. If you use the site to harass, threaten or harm anyone, we may report it to the police.
Changes
We may update these terms. The version on this page, with its date, is the one that applies when you use the site.
Law and courts
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring proceedings about them in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
