Editorial and Safeguards Policy

How this site works, what we check, what we never publish, and the rights of anyone named here

Court sentencing outcomes are public information, and open justice matters. But every record on this site is about a real person, and publishing it carries responsibilities. This page sets out, in plain terms, every safeguard we operate. It exists so that anyone can hold us to it.

1. Where our information comes from

Our records are compiled from published media reports and other publicly available sources. Every listing attributes its original source, and the source publication is shown on each record. We do not publish material from our own investigation or from anonymous tips, and we never source records from our own or affiliated websites.

2. How records are checked

Records are checked against their source article before publication, and new records that cannot be supported by their source are rejected rather than published. Where a source supports the person and sentence but does not name the court or the offence, we publish the record with that field honestly left blank rather than guessing.

We also re-check sources periodically to confirm the report is still live. Each listing shows when its source was last checked, and records whose source is found to contradict them are withdrawn from publication.

3. What we never publish

  • The names of victims, witnesses, or their family members. Where older records contained such names in descriptive text, that text has been rewritten to remove them.
  • Records about defendants who were under 18 when sentenced.
  • Any case that appears to be subject to reporting restrictions or an anonymity order, including material protected under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992.
  • Records identified only by a partial or anonymised identity, such as initials or descriptions. If the original reporting did not fully name a person, usually for legal reasons, neither do we.
  • Records whose source article does not support what they claim.

4. Listings are not permanent

We operate a delisting policy informed by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The rehabilitation period runs from the end of the sentence and scales with its length, and once a conviction is likely to be spent the listing is removed from public view. Two independent systems apply this rule, and a record is withdrawn if either judges it spent. Every listing is delisted after a maximum listing period regardless of outcome, with the exception of sentences that never become spent under the Act.

5. Appeals and corrections

We monitor reported appeal outcomes so that records affected by a quashed conviction or a varied sentence can be corrected or removed. Sentencing details shown are as reported at the time and may since have changed; every court page carries this warning.

6. The right to removal

Anyone can request the removal of a listing directly from the record itself, on grounds including inaccuracy, a successful appeal, reporting restrictions, a spent conviction, mistaken identity, being a victim or witness named in error, or another safety or welfare concern. Every request is reviewed by a person, we aim to respond within 5 working days, and requests involving reporting restrictions, named victims or witnesses, or mistaken identity are treated as urgent. An approved removal is recorded so that the same case is not re-published by our automated collection later.

7. Data minimisation

We publish only what the public report contained: name, offence as reported, sentence, court, and date. We do not hold or publish dates of birth, home addresses, or photographs, and we offer the public no facility to search or profile people by name. Records that share a name are separate records; nothing on this site asserts that they concern the same person.

8. What this site must not be used for

This site is not a criminal record check and is not a substitute for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. It must not be used to make decisions about any person's employment, housing, credit, or insurance, and it must not be used to harass, intimidate, or harm anyone. Offence descriptions reflect the wording used in media reporting and may not match the formal legal charge.

9. Holding us to this

If you believe any record breaches this policy, use the removal request option on the record or contact us. Complaints about our handling of personal data can also be made to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
