What this site is
CourtSentences.co.uk is an independent information service operated by Search Ventures Ltd. It compiles the outcomes of sentencing hearings in courts in England and Wales from published media reports and other publicly available sources, and attributes every record to its source.
We are not part of, or affiliated with, any court, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, the Ministry of Justice, the police, or any other public body.
Not an official record
The authoritative record of any case is held by the court that heard it. Our records summarise what was reported about a case; they are not a transcript or an official register. For official information about a case, contact the court concerned or HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
Not a criminal record check
This site is not a substitute for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and it must not be used to make decisions about any person's employment, housing, credit, insurance, or anything similar. It does not show a person's full criminal history, and the absence of a record here says nothing about whether someone has a conviction. Convictions can become spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and we remove records once a conviction is likely to be spent.
Accuracy
We check each record against its source before publication and check sources again over time, as set out in our Editorial and Safeguards Policy. Each record's label says what its check covered.
Even so, a published report can itself contain mistakes, and our records can only be as accurate as the reporting they come from. Offence descriptions follow the wording used in the report and may not match the formal legal charge. Where a report does not state a detail, such as the court or the sentencing date, we leave it blank rather than guess.
What a record means
A record reports that a named person was sentenced for an offence, as described in the cited report. It does not suggest that the person has committed any other offence, and it says nothing about them beyond what that report states.
Records that show the same name are separate records. Nothing on this site asserts that two records concern the same person, and many common names belong to different people.
Changes after publication
Convictions can be overturned and sentences changed on appeal, and other details can be corrected after a report is published. We monitor reported appeal outcomes and correct or remove affected records, but a change will not always be reflected straight away.
