On 14 August 2024, at just before 1am, Luke Johnson, 37, of Major Street, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was driving a Volkswagen Crafter van on the A1 at Tinwell, Leicestershire, after consuming alcohol. He smashed into the back of a police car at the scene of a lane closure following a vehicle recovery, causing injuries to the officer inside and substantial damage to the vehicle. The officer at the front dived out of the way. Johnson gave a breath test reading of 113 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath, over three times the legal limit. He claimed he did not see police lights or cones and had taken an unusual route via the A1, which was dark.
Pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving without due care and attention. Admitted having a problem with alcohol and drinking vodka while at work.
