On June 23, 2023, at the Saint Piran Cafe in Bissoe near Truro, Christopher Gillbard removed the muzzle from his 14-year-old Australian Shepherd, Merlin, to allow the dog to drink, resulting in Merlin biting a man on the hand while he was eating with his partner. The victim sustained puncture wounds requiring hospital treatment and continued to suffer effects a year later. This was not the first incident, with previous bites occurring in 2017 at a playpark and in 2020 at a bank in Liskeard.
