Colette Carre
Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal *
Sentence
15-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months
Colette Carre, 56, of Acacia Grove, March, failed to provide prompt or adequate professional veterinary care and attention to her female greyhound type dog called Defa for signs of ill health, including a large tumourous mass on her snout/muzzle, weight loss, and poor bodily condition. The defendant had made an appointment to have Defa put to sleep, but concerns were raised over the dog's condition and the matter was reported to the RSPCA. Witnesses described Defa as emaciated with a strong smell of putrefaction and a large ulcerated tumourous mass the size of a grapefruit on the front of her mouth and snout, measuring approximately 14cm in diameter side to side and 7cm front to back. A vet's examination confirmed emaciation, a large putrefying and necrosing tumour over her upper jaw obliterating the nostrils, an overpowering smell of rotting flesh and purulent discharge, dehydration, and inability to eat, drink, or pant due to the tumour, which was incredibly painful and caused suffering for at least two months.
Pleaded guilty. Also received a lifetime ban on keeping all animals, a community order including 12 mental health treatment requirement sessions and 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days, and ordered to pay a £187 victim surcharge. Judge commented that his stomach had never turned so much by what he had seen, referring to photos of the dog. In mitigation, defendant cited mental health issues and financial difficulties.
