The ordeal culminated in gagging, blindfolding, zip-tying, and placing the victim in a hole wrapped in plastic sheeting like a 'body bag', where he feared for his life.

He armed himself with two knives from the kitchen, threatened to stab her if she screamed, punched her causing near unconsciousness, grabbed her neck, stamped on her, slashed her leg (7.5cm wound), and instructed her to clean her own blood. He threatened to kill her and smashed her phone. The victim pushed the children out of a downstairs window to escape; they fled over a garden fence to a neighbour. Smith fled but handed himself in the next day after a police appeal. The victim sustained a fractured spine, a leg slash, and head gash. In a separate incident in July 2025, Smith assaulted another ex-partner by hitting her in the head and leg, causing her to fall and curl up in protection.

The victim was forced to care for Wixon's 10 children, clean the house, and endure regular beatings, including being hit with a broom handle, having teeth knocked out, washing-up liquid squirted down her throat, bleach splashed on her face, and her head shaved repeatedly. She was not allowed to bathe, lived in unsanitary conditions in a mouldy bedroom, ate scraps, and was never permitted outside. Police discovered her in March 2021 after Wixon's son called them; she was found bruised, toothless, unwashed, and malnourished.

The collision involved her Mini Cooper, an Audi A3, a Polestar 2, and a Seat Leon taxi, resulting in the deaths of taxi driver Octavian Codreanu at the scene and passenger Moyra Whelan later that day at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Several others sustained serious, life-changing injuries. Mitchell regularly filmed herself speeding up to 100mph and swerving into oncoming traffic using her mobile phone, uploading videos to Snapchat.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and two counts of causing death by driving whilst uninsured.

He was arrested the next day and granted conditional bail at Gloucester Magistrates' Court on September 27, 2025. On October 11, 2025, while under curfew, he entered Paddy Power on Cheltenham High Street at 8.10pm, jumped the counter, demanded money, punched the worker repeatedly causing serious concussion, bruising, swelling, and psychological harm including flashbacks and fear of returning to work. He stole £560. A third robbery occurred on August 2, 2025, at Iceland supermarket where he punched staff while fleeing.
Admitted two counts of robbery. 17 previous convictions including a 2006 knife-point robbery. Clinton Bowen was the mastermind behind a conspiracy to burgle the house of a coin dealer in Northamptonshire. The gang arranged a meeting with the victim under the pretence of selling a private coin collection, during which Bowen distracted the victim while another placed a tracker on his car. On the night of March 10, 2024, four masked burglars broke into the coin dealer's house while he and his wife slept upstairs, stealing £500,000 worth of rare coins. The victim pursued the gang's stolen getaway car but was stabbed in the leg, forcing him to back off. The burglars escaped after removing the tracker, but the victim noted the number plate. Bowen absconded on the penultimate day of his trial at Gloucester Crown Court and was sentenced in his absence. He was arrested on January 11, 2026, in Cheltenham after being recognized by police.

The offences were influenced by his fixation on extreme pornography depicting violence, brutality, humiliation, and sexual abuse of women, with around 4,500 such videos found on his devices from 2021 to 2024. He was arrested by Gloucestershire Police in April 2024 after devices were seized.
Pleaded guilty to possessing extreme pornographic images immediately prior to trial. Found guilty of one count of anal rape, one count of oral rape, one count of sexual assault, and one count of false imprisonment. Acquitted of 25 counts; seven counts lie on file. On December 24, 2023, around 2am, Adam Downey grabbed an unknown man from behind near Cainscross Road in Stroud, pulled him to the ground, and dragged him into undergrowth. He threatened the victim with a knife and demanded his personal property, stealing a Google Pixel 8 phone, wallet, and keys before fleeing towards Gannicox Road and Burford Drive. The victim was shaken but not physically injured and contacted police. CCTV footage identified Downey wandering in Stroud town centre before the attack and at a supermarket on Stratford Road shortly after, where he was seen examining items from the wallet and the phone. Ten days later, on January 3, 2024, he was arrested while attempting to sell the stolen phone. Despite evidence, he refused to comment during interviews.

He was seen on internal camera at a property on Larput Place in Cheltenham carrying a large kitchen knife and setting fire to a duvet on the bedroom floor with a lighter, destroying the room contents. Officers rescued him from a first-floor window via a fragile roof, during which he was aggressive, required restraint, and spat in the eye of a rescuing officer. Extensive damage required significant refurbishment. No damage to neighbouring properties.
Pleaded guilty on 17 December 2024 to arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered, threats to kill his then partner, and assaulting an emergency worker. Given 25 per cent credit on sentence for guilty pleas. Under the influence of cocaine at the time. Remorse shown. Must serve up to half before release on licence.

Aditya Rai, 43, of Brockworth, created a fake university degree, passport, and CV under a false identity to secure employment at two law firms in Gloucestershire and a construction company in Bristol. He earned around £10,000 through these roles, which he resigned from or was terminated due to failed reference checks. His fraudulent activities involved forging documents to hide prior convictions and were uncovered during a Gloucestershire Police investigation, leading to his arrest in June 2022 and again in February 2025.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud by false representation, possessing or controlling false identity documents, and using a false instrument. Offences were committed during the COVID lockdown due to financial difficulties, with the judge describing him as a dishonest person who impacted his family.
Nicholas Geenty
Possession with intent to supply cocaine *

On December 3, 2024, Nicholas Geenty was spotted in a car in the Paganhill area of Stroud while officers from the Cotswolds and Stroud Neighbourhood Support Team were patrolling. He fled from police in his vehicle, leading to a pursuit, and was detained after a road closure. A search of his vehicle uncovered cocaine with a street value of around £3,000, cannabis worth £45, digital scales, and a burner phone.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and possession of cannabis. Was on licence for a previous drug conviction. Ordered to pay costs of £228.
Paul Ockelton
Sexual assault by touching (girl under 13) *

Paul Ockelton, of Innsworth, sexually assaulted a girl under 13 by touching her privates in November 2021. He sat her on his lap and was heard asking 'Do you like this?' while carrying out the intentional sexual touching. Later that evening, the girl disclosed to her mother that Ockelton had touched her privates. Ockelton denied this in interview, claiming he had been tickling her tummy and brushing her hair. A jury rejected his defence after a four-day trial and found him guilty on 14 March.

John Cacace was involved in animal welfare offences where seven dogs and a litter of puppies were found in poor, filthy, and cramped conditions at a premises in Arlingham. The dogs were in his possession, and Stroud District Council gained possession under Section 20 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, with most dogs later re-homed.

On 27 June 2024, in the early hours, Paul Salisbury visited an address on Garnells Road. He was let into the home of two male occupants he did not know, armed with a kitchen knife and two meat cleavers. He threatened and stamped on the head of one man, causing bleeding and bruising, then threatened the second man who was immobile due to a leg injury, demanding money. They handed over £30 cash. He then approached a neighbour's door, brandished the knife, was pushed away, threatened to kill the man, and smashed a window with a metal pole. He was seen shirtless walking around armed and was arrested by police.
Pleaded guilty to one count of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery, three counts of possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed article, two counts of assault by beating and one count of criminal damage. In mitigation, suffers from a personality disorder affecting emotional regulation; has been taking antidepressants and attending mental health workshops since remand.

Kane Pearson, aged 21, befriended a 14-year-old girl on Instagram in August 2023 after she mistook him for someone she knew. He insisted she was his girlfriend and pressured her into meeting. The conversations were discovered after the victim’s friend confided in her mother, who informed the victim’s mother.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of causing a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity and one count of engaging in sexual communication with a child. Made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years, put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years, and a five-year restraining order. Ordered to pay £4,760 in compensation to the victim.

Michael Davies, owner of Autodeals of Stroud, failed to maintain a fence around a low wall at his car dealership on Stratford Road, Paganhill. On 2 February 2022, a visitor opened the boot of a car, lost balance, and fell 6ft to a Tarmac road below, sustaining a serious neck injury that required five weeks of hospitalisation and has ongoing effects on his mobility. The incident was captured on CCTV and was deemed entirely foreseeable and preventable.
Pleaded guilty to failing in his duty to ensure the safety of visitors to his work premises. The case highlighted the importance of health and safety risk assessments, as noted by SDC Health and Safety Officer David Peacock.

Concerns were raised by his support worker and others leading to her arrest on 12 October 2023.
Pleaded guilty to blackmail and malicious communications. Subject to a seven-year restraining order preventing contact with the victim or entering the road where he lives.
Chelsea Iles

Chelsea Iles exploited her position of trust as carer for her elderly neighbour (aged in his 80s) after her mother's death in October 2022. Between October 2022 and October 2023, she withdrew £287,825 from his bank account without his knowledge, including £23,000 in cash and the rest via internet banking transfers to her own and third-party accounts. She used around £80,000 for gambling and altered bank statements digitally to deceive the victim due to his poor eyesight. She transferred £55,700 back at times. Discovered after bank reported suspicious activity; arrested October 2023, charged November 2024.

PC Dan Parsons, 32, was driving an unmarked police car responding to a suspected firearms incident in Longwell Green when he drove through a red light on a roundabout where the A4174 joins Badminton Road in Emersons Green on Sunday 24 November 2024, colliding with a 19-year-old woman on a pedestrian crossing, leaving her with serious injuries. Officers provided first aid alongside paramedics before she was taken to hospital. The Serious Collisions Investigation Team investigated, leading to charges after referral to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving. Sentencing hearing held on 12 January 2025.

Conspiracy to procure a poison with intent to procure a miscarriage *

Elliot Benham, aged 25, was accused alongside Sophie Harvey of purchasing abortion pills online in 2018 with the intent to procure a miscarriage at 28 weeks and five days gestation. The couple admitted to the purchase but claimed Harvey did not take the pills, resulting in a stillborn birth in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, which was disposed of in the bin. The initial trial at Gloucester Crown Court in May 2024 was discharged due to inaccurate BBC reporting that could have prejudiced the jury. In a subsequent hearing, he pleaded guilty to the new offence.
Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to procure a poison with intent to procure a miscarriage. Previously admitted to concealing the birth of a child. The trial collapsed due to BBC reporting errors, and the judge criticised the reporting as appalling and sloppy.
