He called the police the next day to confess. Investigation showed he was speeding at 57mph in a 40mph zone and was over the drink-drive limit, proven by pub CCTV and till receipts.

He intercepted a letter sent to the vehicle's elderly female owner and replied pretending to be her, claiming she had been driving but was in the Royal Surrey County Hospital 'dying of cancer' and did not drive on dual carriageways or motorways. He produced two pieces of doctored dash-cam footage claiming the vehicle was at the hospital, but roadworks in the footage proved it was false. He also forged a hospital appointment letter and a car parking ticket for the same date in Guildford.

Pleaded guilty to speeding, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and perverting the course of justice. Disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Michael Shirley, an 18-year-old Royal Navy sailor, was arrested and charged with her murder. At trial, the prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence including a matching athletic shoe print, blood type compatibility, scratch marks, and a disputed timeline.

Pleaded not guilty. Wrongly convicted; conviction overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2003 after new DNA evidence proved his innocence.

She created false spreadsheets to conceal hundreds of unauthorised transfers to her own accounts or to pay her debts. In May 2018, she forged his signature to close a £70,000 pension policy, reducing it to £48,493 which she spent. She also dissolved his business into her name in August 2016, failed to file accounts or pay HMRC tax. The fraud was discovered when a family member noticed the business change, revealing emptied savings and overdraft. The victim took his own life in February 2020.

Pleaded guilty to theft, fraud by abuse of position of trust, and fraud by false representation. Her Honour Judge Angela Morris described the case as high culpability, high breach of trust, and sophisticated, with an uplift due to impact on victim.

He pleaded guilty to arranging the commission of a child sex offence and possession of cannabis at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court. Further investigation revealed he abused a 14-year-old boy met via Grindr in March 2021, including serious sexual assault in June 2021 in Carisbrooke woodland. Phone data showed messages to other children, indecent images, prior abuse of another teenage boy (2014-2016), and cannabis dealing.

He additionally broke into a property on Lower Wokingham Road, Crowthorne, Berkshire, on 5 September, but did not steal anything. Officers launched an investigation and made an arrest.

Elliot Ayres, 18, of Merryman Drive in Crowthorne, and Paul John Stevens were in a stolen black Fiat 500 on Reading Road, Yateley, on 16 March 2021 when they saw the victim’s black Mercedes. The driver of the Fiat pulled in front of the Mercedes, blocking it, and aimed a shotgun at the driver. Stevens fired a single shot into the side of the Mercedes, causing significant damage. No one was injured. The victims were two 24-year-old men from Surrey, targeted due to mistaken identity. The Fiat was later found burnt out, and the sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun was recovered.

A 35-year-old man from Plymouth has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of horrific child sex offences that took place more than 10 years ago in Tidworth, Wiltshire. Paul Keith Buckland, residing at Prestonbury Close in Plymouth, was found guilty at Winchester Crown Court of the following crimes: two counts of rape of a child under 13, two counts of attempted rape of a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and two counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act. The offences occurred while Buckland was living in Tidworth but were not reported to Wiltshire Police until 2020, when the victim bravely came forward with her family. Buckland refused to attend his sentencing hearing, an action that the court deemed an aggravating factor. In addition to his custodial sentence, he has been placed on the sex offenders’ register and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order.

On the evening of Tuesday, 2 August 2021, a 30-year-old woman was socialising at the Black Sheep public house in Petersfield when Dumea started talking to her in the smoking area. At around 11pm, she left to find her husband. Dumea followed her, falsely claiming her husband was in the kebab shop nearby and offered to walk her there. Instead, he forced her into his nearby home on Chapel Street. Inside, he tried to kiss her and told her to go upstairs. She refused and tried to push him away, but he forced her backwards onto the stairs and raped her. Shortly after, another man entered the property, confronted Dumea, allowing the woman to escape. The next day, Wednesday 3 August 2021, she reported to police and Dumea was arrested and charged with one count of rape.

Pleaded guilty to rape at an earlier hearing. Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Philip Banning, a 68-year-old former Team GB runner and qualified athletics coach, sexually abused four schoolgirls under the age of 16, including an 11-year-old, while coaching at Andover 1 Club during the 1970s and 80s. The abuse took place in his car during lifts home, under the guise of sports massages, and in a room beneath his stairs at parties where alcohol was served to minors. One survivor described how Banning gave her a Valentine's card at age 12, calling it his 'special way' of showing affection. Another recounted a 'brutal and forceful' first kiss that left her shattered. The victims said he violated a position of trust and stole their childhoods.

Pleaded guilty to 18 counts of indecent assault on underage girls. Must sign the sex offenders register for life. Judge Keith Cutler CBE condemned his abuse of trust, stating he groomed and abused his position without care for the lifelong damage caused.

In interview, he admitted the tablet was his alone and that he was sexually aroused by the images.

Arrested two days later, the handgun and machete were found in their getaway car. Stanley Elliott stabbed to death married couple Geoffrey Hibbert, 61, and Michelle Hibbert, 29, at their home in Buckland Avenue, Basingstoke, in the early hours of Sunday 20 June 2021, after they returned from a night out in Reading having asked him to look after their young child. Mrs Hibbert called 999 naming her attacker as ‘Stan Elliott’. Multiple stab injuries caused their deaths.

Convicted of two counts of murder following a four-week trial. Denied the charges.

Stephen Nicholson

Stephen Nicholson, a lodger in the family home, raped 13-year-old Lucy McHugh three times starting in May 2017 when she was 12, exploiting her vulnerability and crush on him. To prevent her exposing him as an abuser, he lured her to Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre in July 2018 and stabbed her 27 times, including 11 in the neck, in an execution-style murder. He was linked by DNA on discarded clothing. Also convicted of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl in 2012.

Found guilty after trial of murder and three charges of rape. Judge Mrs Justice May described the attack as pitiless and an execution, calling Nicholson depraved and utterly selfish. Prior convictions for affray, damaging property, and other offences.

Sharon Carr

Life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 14 years imprisonment

In the early hours of 7 June 1992, 12-year-old Sharon Carr randomly attacked 18-year-old Katie Rackliff as Rackliff walked home from a nightclub in Camberley, Surrey. Carr stabbed Rackliff, a stranger, 32 times with a six-and-a-half-inch knife, inflicting wounds to her ribs, heart, vagina and anus. Some of Rackliff's jewellery was taken. Her body was transported to Farnborough, dragged along a road, and dumped beside a cemetery wall. The murder initially went unsolved, with police believing the attacker to be an adult male due to the brutality and sexual mutilation. Carr later attacked a schoolmate in 1994 and while in custody boasted about the murder in diaries and calls, providing details only the killer would know. Her writings revealed a sexual motive and explicit satisfaction from the killing.

Convicted after a month-long trial. The jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict after five hours of deliberation. Mr Justice Baker remarked: "What is clear is that you had a sexual motive for this killing and it is apparent both from the brutal manner in which you mutilated her body and chilling entries in your diary, that killing, as you put it, turns you on. You are in my view an extremely dangerous young woman." Carr was 12 at the time of the killing, making her Britain's youngest female murderer.

Shaun Dyson

Shaun Dyson, 28, murdered his estranged wife Lucy-Anne Rushton, 30, in their home in Andover, Hampshire on 23 June. He kicked, punched and stamped on her repeatedly while she lay on the floor, unarmed and half-naked. A post-mortem revealed 37 broken ribs, a fractured breastbone and collapsed lungs. Dyson became enraged after she took a phone call from an ex-partner, and forced her to swallow her wedding ring. Children were inside the property during the attack. He later made a calm 999 call and falsely claimed she had drowned.

Pleaded guilty to manslaughter, then changed plea to murder mid-trial. Judge described him as having a 'jealous, controlling and violent nature'. Victim was mother of five.

Silipa Keresi

Silipa Keresi wrapped her newborn baby son Malakai in a towel and left him by a tree off Shore Road, Hythe, in the New Forest. Malakai was found by a member of the public on the afternoon of March 5, 2020. Keresi, of Pylewell Road, Hythe, was arrested two days later.

Convicted of murder by a jury. Denied murder and an alternate charge of infanticide. The judge, Mr Justice Garnham QC, noted: 'The abandonment of Malakai was an act of desperation by a vulnerable woman, facing challenging circumstances. The emotional affect of your giving birth outdoors and unaccompanied was profound.'

Sean Hodgson

Sean Hodgson was convicted of the murder of Teresa De Simone, a 22-year-old barmaid who was strangled in her car outside the Tom Tackle pub in Southampton on 5 December 1979. Hodgson had arrived in Southampton two days before the murder and was arrested for unrelated theft. He later confessed to the murder to a priest and police, providing details that only the killer or investigators would know. At trial, he did not give evidence and was convicted by a unanimous jury. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but maintained his innocence. After 27 years in prison, DNA testing on preserved swabs proved the semen at the scene could not be his, leading to his exoneration in 2009.

Convicted after trial; Hodgson had confessed to the murder but claimed he was a pathological liar and made false confessions. Exonerated in 2009 after DNA evidence proved his innocence.

William Landy

Assault by penetration and sexual touching of a child *

William Landy gained access to his nine-year-old victim by earning the trust of her family before sexually assaulting her by penetration and sexual touching on one occasion after drinking. The abuse came to light in 2018 when the victim told her family, having previously remained silent due to fear of not being believed. Landy had contacted social services claiming the victim exposed herself to him.

Found guilty by jury following trial. Judge Jane Miller QC noted the profound impact on the victim. Mitigation included health problems: previous liver transplant, type two diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, and history of overdose.

On November 19, 2024, in Pewsey, Wesley Ward was a masked passenger wearing a balaclava and gloves in a vehicle with stolen number plates on Swan Road. The driver crashed into three police cars during an evasion attempt. Arrested on the spot with tools, a fire extinguisher, and cloned plates found inside the car.

Pleaded guilty to preparing for theft.

Thomas Jackson

On 28 November, at 5.10pm, Thomas Jackson and Robert Sifile stormed the Nisa Local store in Church Crookham masked and hooded. Jackson hit the cashier on the back several times with a curved machete while Sifile held a gun to his head. They made the cashier open the till and Jackson took over £560 in cash. They were arrested two days later, and the machete was recovered from their getaway car.

Pleaded guilty to robbery and possession charges. Used a machete during the robbery.

Thomas Martin

Thomas Martin, of Launcelot Court, Andover, set up a Snapchat profile ‘TomLock11’ and targeted two 15-year-old girls by offering to buy tobacco in exchange for indecent images. He used those images to blackmail them into sending more by threatening to publish them on social media including Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. He also sent images of his penis and made victims watch him masturbate. His phone contained one Category A, 10 Category B and two Category C indecent images of children. Victims reported feeling ruined, demeaning, scared, violated and suffering panic attacks.

Pleaded guilty to two counts of blackmail between May 1 and October 21, 2019, disclosing private sexual photographs with intent to cause distress and three charges of making an indecent photograph of a child.
