Winchester Crown Court Sentencing Results

Philip Pidgley, director of FDS Waste Services Limited, received a sentence following the company's convictions for corporate manslaughter and other breaches of health and safety legislation after a trial in December 2022.

Tiberiu Miclea, 42, from Bordon, was driving a blue Honda Civic on the A339 at Lasham around 7.30pm on February 12 when he crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a silver Toyota Corolla driven by the victim, 71. The victim's wife suffered serious injuries and the victim died in hospital three days later on February 15. Miclea himself was badly hurt and taken to hospital. He admitted causing the fatal collision.

Tenny Turner, 30, from Hook, lost control of his Citroen C2 on the A287 at around 12.45am on 25 February 2017. The car veered off the road, hit several trees, and flipped over. The passenger, 31, was thrown from the vehicle and died in hospital five days later. Turner was nearly twice the legal alcohol limit and was also found with cocaine. He initially blamed another man but police confirmed he was driving.

On 12 May, Richard Storry drove his parents' Volkswagen Tiguan from Lasham Airfield to Basingstoke for a burger. Despite being nearly twice the drink-drive limit, he drove a quarter of a mile the wrong way down the A339 at Winslade and collided head-on with a Volkswagen Golf driven by the victim. The victim, from Alton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers attended McNaughton’s home on Saturday 4 December last year and seized a tablet, computer, laptops and a camera. Forensic examinations revealed 23,003 indecent images – including 18 movies – stored on a tablet. Of these, 608 were Category A, 969 Category B and 21,426 Category C. The files contained pictures of babies, toddlers and preteens. No evidence of distribution or conversations regarding child abuse materials. In interview, he admitted the tablet was his alone and that he was sexually aroused by the images.

On 13 April at 5.15pm, lorry driver Roy Woods collided with two motorcycles on Stockbridge Road, Leckford, after failing to notice them stopping to turn. The victim, 63, was killed instantly, and another rider was injured but later discharged from hospital. Investigators found Woods was engaged in a hands-free phone call via a mounted phone and headphones; the distraction caused him not to react in time.

Alex Edwards and another man attacked a trans woman university student in a park in Swansea on 20 May 2023. Edwards made transphobic comments towards the victim. After the victim threw a can of drink at the attackers, Edwards kicked her in the head with force a number of times, leaving an imprint of his shoe on her face. The victim was treated in hospital for her injuries. Edwards later boasted on social media about the attack.

On November 19, 2024, in Pewsey, Bernie Ward drove a suspicious vehicle with stolen number plates on Swan Road. When pulled over by police, he crashed head-on into one police car, reversed into a second, and then smashed a third while attempting to evade capture. He and two masked passengers were arrested on the spot; police found tools, a fire extinguisher, and cloned plates inside the car.

On 24 June 2016, Barry Smart, 37, was driving a BMW along the A30 at Water End when the car veered off the road and struck a tree. His passenger, the victim, 30, suffered life-threatening injuries and died three days later in hospital. Smart was also severely injured. An investigation by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit led to him pleading guilty at Winchester Crown Court.

Daren Jones targeted two boys under the age of 13 in Tadley and Reading between 2015 and 2017. The abuse was reported in December 2017. Jones had fled the United States in 2008 while on bail for serious child sex offences and kidnapping two teenage boys. He lived under a false name until his arrest by Hampshire Constabulary at a Brighton hotel on 27th December.

On 7 May 2019 at Headley Road, Liphook, the defendant and two others used a stolen JCB telehandler to rip an ATM from a Co-op shop. The cash machine was loaded into a stolen Transit van, sparking a high-speed police chase across Hampshire, Surrey, and Sussex involving the National Police Air Service helicopter.

In February 2016, Christopher Henry was caught speeding on the A343 Newbury Road in a Freelander registered to his ex-wife. He intercepted the ticket and completed paperwork in his ex-wife's name, claiming a French national with a name matching a Paris wax museum was the driver. When further paperwork was sent, it was then claimed a George Harris from the Isle of Lewis was responsible. A two-year Hampshire Police investigation found that the Frenchman's identity was bogus, his given address was a hotel he never stayed at, and the postmistress on Lewis had never heard of Harris. Henry's fingerprints were on the forged documents and his voice was captured on AA callouts from the Freelander. He was convicted of perverting the course of justice on three counts.
