Glenn Poyner, 35, a former RAF worker at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, committed eight child sex offences against two girls, including four counts of rape, one count of assault by penetration, one count of causing a child aged under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of sexual activity with a child. The offences caused severe trauma to the victims, with one suffering social anxiety, nightmares, and sleep issues, and the other living in constant fear, jumping at sights associated with Poyner and believing her future has been affected. Poyner was housed on a military family estate near a primary school after guilty pleas in May, despite objections, but was moved after threats. The judge emphasized the need for close supervision post-release for public protection.

Pleaded guilty to eight child sex offences including four counts of rape. Judge considered him dangerous and imposed a sexual harm prevention order banning contact with victims. Eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of custodial sentence. Discharged from RAF in June.

On Friday 27 May 2023, Oliver Barber, of Juniper Way in Shifnal, drove his BMW after drinking with friends in Shifnal. Despite being three times over the legal drink drive limit, the 20-year-old offered lifts to three people, including 19-year-old William Hubbard. Shortly after, Barber collided with a fence on the A464 after reaching speeds of more than 60mph in a 30mph zone. William Hubbard, a backseat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. Barber suffered serious facial injuries and was arrested following a police investigation.

Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Disqualified from driving for 11 years.

On Wednesday 4 March, officers on plain clothes patrol near Constitution Hill in Wellington saw Esten Bennett, 32, enter an address and then leave in a vehicle. He was followed and stopped at Hadley Park Services, where he was arrested. A search found a wrap of class A drugs, £170 in cash, and a mobile phone linked to a drugs line. Further enquiries linked him to the line set up on Tuesday 13 January, the day he was released from prison. The line was active for seven weeks, supplying drugs across Telford and Wales, estimated to have sold around 200 grams of crack cocaine.

Pleaded guilty. Set up drugs line on the day he was released from prison. Prior imprisonment mentioned.

Damian Fellows breached his SHPO by making 98 phone calls to 999 call handlers at Cambridgeshire Constabulary between November 9 and November 30, 2023, from his home in Newport. He targeted female handlers, initiating sexual conversations, asking about secret sex clubs in gyms, legality of nudity in gyms, and more explicit sexual questions. He also exposed himself to a swimming centre lifeguard.

Described as a 'persistent' and 'high-risk sex offender' with past convictions for sex offences. Breached sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) issued in 2015.

On 22 February 2024 at around 10pm, Matthew Sylvester attempted to break into a shop in Telford town centre using a trolley. He covered his face with a jumper and fashioned a fake firearm from a brown paper bag to mimic a handgun. When police officers PC Dan Arthur and PC George Oliver arrived in response to the report, Sylvester charged at their patrol car, pointed the imitation firearm at them, threatened PC Oliver, kicked the vehicle, and attempted to open the boot. The officers pursued and tackled him, revealing his identity as he was known to police. He was found in possession of cocaine.

Pleaded guilty to all charges halfway through a week-long trial. Of no fixed abode.

On December 15, 2023, Daniel Dodd, aged 27, was working as a bouncer at Albert’s Shed nightclub in Telford town centre. The victim, a young dad in an intoxicated state, started to climb a fence outside the venue in Southwater. Dodd shoved the man in the chest, causing him to fall to the ground and suffer a fractured and dislocated ankle. The victim was taken to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, where a metal plate was inserted into his foot, which will remain for life. He spent an extended period in hospital and was prescribed strong painkillers containing opioids for several months afterwards.

Used excessive and unnecessary force while working as a bouncer. Lost his job as a result.

Gavin Sloan, formerly of Briar Close in Minsterley, was arrested in May 2021 after West Mercia Police executed a warrant at his home, suspecting possession of indecent images of children. Searches revealed numerous videos of indecent images taken between 2013 and 2021, including one of Sloan sexually assaulting a young child. He committed a string of sexual offences against children and young people.

Pleaded guilty to more than 30 offences last month. Described as a highly dangerous individual who preyed on young and vulnerable victims.

Ben Markham, aged 28, of Worcester, broke down the front door using a crowbar to a home in Clee Hill on 10 November 2020, at around 4.00am, before going upstairs and threatening the victim in her bedroom. He forced the victim to open the safe in the property before taking a large sum of money and thousands of pounds worth of jewellery. The stolen jewellery, which held a great deal of sentimental value for the victim, has not been found.

Pleaded guilty to robbery. The incident was described as extremely traumatic for the victim.

Huw Glover, a 58-year-old GP from Shropshire, joined a social media group for paedophilia and incest on 20 August 2019. An undercover police officer was in the group. Glover posed as a woman, shared fantasies about child abuse, and discussed exchanging children as young as eight for sexual exploitation. He attempted to publish obscene articles. Police traced him via the platform and executed a warrant on 3 September 2019, seizing a Samsung phone containing incriminating messages and a fake profile photo.

Pleaded guilty to attempting to publish an obscene article. The case was prosecuted due to concerns over his role as a GP. Avoided custodial sentence.

In December 2021, Rugby detectives raided a house on Arnold Street and discovered an estimated £21,000 of cocaine and cannabis hidden inside. Hayden De’Harr, 27, of Telford was arrested and held on remand. In November 2022, he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court and was sentenced for possession of class A and B drugs with intent to supply, with an outstanding money laundering case also taken into account.

Sentence also linked to an outstanding money laundering case. Police described the drugs as hidden in ‘elaborate’ places.

Derek Byfield, 71, of Far Forest near Cleobury Mortimer, South Shropshire, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sex offences against two underage girls. He admitted raping a 13-year-old girl in the 1970s and, after the assault, gave her sweets and threatened to beat her if she became pregnant. He also pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a second child, who was under 16, in more recent years. On one occasion with the second victim, Byfield had unprotected sex and then took her to a pharmacy for the morning-after pill.

Pleaded guilty to one count of rape and five counts of sexual activity with a child. Judge Tindal noted Byfield's chronic lymphocytic leukaemia but emphasised the gravity of the offences. Made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

A former West Mercia Police community support officer, Derren Jon Tomlinson, aged 44 of Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty to raping a child, committing sexual assault and engaging in a bestiality offence. He appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on 4 February 2016 and received a 16-year custodial sentence for the rape, with concurrent sentences of four years for sexual assault and one year for bestiality. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life. The offences were not connected to his professional role but irreparably damaged public trust.

Pleaded guilty. Concurrent 4 years for sexual assault and 1 year for bestiality. Placed on the sex offenders register for life. Former West Mercia Police community support officer.

Multiple sexual offences against children *

Michael Lee Price, 22, from Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was convicted of ten counts of sexual offences against children, including rape and sexual assault of girls and a boy, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, causing a child to watch a sexual act, possession of extreme pornographic images, and making an indecent photograph of a child. The abuse came to light after one survivor reported the crimes in July 2022, leading to a police investigation and other survivors coming forward. Price denied all allegations but was found guilty at Stafford Crown Court in April 2024. He was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court to 14 years' imprisonment, with an extended licence period of three years, and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Pleaded not guilty to sexual offences but convicted after trial. Pleaded guilty to criminal damage. Extended licence period of three years, Sex Offenders Register for life, and indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Mark Hemmings

In February 1993, Mark Hemmings, then aged 33, committed a brutal rape against 35-year-old Margaret Gordon in Telford Town Park, Shropshire. The attack was violent and terrifying, leaving Gordon traumatised. DNA evidence was collected but no match was found at the time. Hemmings remained at large until 2017, when West Mercia Police raided his home in Bridgnorth following reports of a man brandishing a knife. During the raid, he stabbed a police dog in the chest with an eight-inch kitchen blade. He was subdued and arrested, and a DNA swab taken during that arrest matched the 1993 rape sample. Margaret Gordon had died in 2014, never seeing justice. Hemmings admitted the rape charge at court.

Admitted to the rape charge. Evaded capture for 25 years; identified via DNA match after being arrested for a knife incident in which he stabbed a police dog.

Mohammed Ali Sultan, aged 28 and formerly residing on Victoria Avenue in Wellington, Shropshire, was already serving a seven-year sentence imposed three years prior for his involvement in a West Midlands child abuse ring, where he admitted having sexual intercourse with two teenage girls, one aged 13. In a separate investigation, he faced charges relating to offences committed in 2007. He was convicted at Shrewsbury Crown Court of two counts of rape and one count of attempted rape. The court extended his sentence by six years, resulting in a total custodial period encompassing both terms, with five years on licence upon release. The victim was praised for her bravery.

Already serving a seven-year sentence for prior child sex offences. Convicted of two counts of rape and one count of attempted rape. Will be subject to five years on licence upon release.

Steven Mills ran an organisation which sold so-called 'Firesticks' via a closed Facebook group and claimed to have more than 30,000 subscribers. The organisation received more than £1 million in five years. The service was primarily provided to UK-based customers and was also sold to a network of resellers. The joint investigation and subsequent police raids identified more than 1,000 customers.

Pleaded guilty in June this year to multiple fraud offences. Joint investigation by the Premier League, West Mercia Police, and FACT. Trading under the names Pikabox and Eyepeeteevee, received more than £1 million in five years. Service provided to UK-based customers and resellers who are under investigation.
