Newport Iow Crown Court Sentencing Results

On 17 August 2024, Loveridge was driving a Kia Sorento on the A468 in Caerphilly when he lost concentration and veered into the opposing lane, clipping one car before colliding head-on with a vehicle driven by the victim. The victim suffered eight broken ribs, a broken nose, a detached bicep, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries, and nerve damage to his neck and shoulder, and was later diagnosed with PTSD. Loveridge was also dealt with for drug offences after he and Elise Humphreys were stopped in a Ford Mondeo on 26 June 2025; the vehicle contained cannabis and cash, and phone messages implicated them in supplying cocaine and cannabis for six months. A search of Loveridge's property found 810g of cannabis worth £8,000.

Wayne Thomas, a serving prisoner, breached an indefinite restraining order by contacting his former partner from HMP Parc between July and November 2025. Police recovered a SIM card from the victim's home and found that Thomas had saved her number in his phone under a false name to hide the contact. He later pleaded guilty to harassment and breach of a restraining order. The court heard the victim said the harassment had seriously affected her mental health and brought back past trauma.

On 6 September 2021, Wasee Shikel travelled from Cardiff to the Port Talbot area and, with another man, met two intoxicated teenage girls. The girls were driven to a remote location, and both men gave them cannabis and alcohol. On 20 September 2021, the same girls were collected again, and further sexual offences were committed against one of them by the other man.

David Cousins was caught driving while disqualified on three occasions in early 2026: on January 28 on Chepstow Road, March 11 on the A467, and April 7 on Cefn Road. He pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified and driving with no insurance. He had previously been convicted of dangerous driving in August 2024 after a high-speed pursuit in 2023, for which he received a suspended sentence. He was also on licence for supplying cocaine at the time of the original dangerous driving offence.

Ryan Hawkins, 40, was serving a prison sentence at HMP Prescoed for robbery. While in custody, he hid a mobile phone, WiFi dongle and charger in a sock concealed in a door frame. Using a secret Facebook account, he contacted a decoy account set up by a paedophile hunter group, believing it to be a 14-year-old girl. Despite being told her age, he continued sexual conversations, sent selfies and voice notes, called her pretty, asked for photographs, and discussed meeting after his release. Police were notified and the hidden devices were found during a cell search. He later pleaded guilty.

Luke Stanley, 35, of Sully, breached a sexual harm prevention order eight times.

David Williams, aged 41, of Gainsborough Road, Cefn Golau, Tredegar, assaulted the victim outside her home in Tredegar on March 1, 2024. The incident followed a phone call from the victim to Williams' then partner, apologising over a previous incident. Williams overheard and asked aggressively about the 'mouthy' caller. Within five minutes, he sped to the victim's driveway, jumped out in a boxing stance, and struck her in the face, fracturing her jaw in two places. She felt a crunch, tasted blood, and confronted him about hitting a woman. He then drove away. The victim, a Welsh international footballer, suffered severe pain, loosened teeth, and required five hours of surgery at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil to fit plates and screws. She can no longer play football, eats only soft food, experiences electric shocks from metal contact, and lives in fear of encountering him.

Leon Morris, 38, of Commercial Street, Aberbargoed, Caerphilly, launched a racist arson attack on Pengam Spice, an Indian restaurant in the Pengam area of Blackwood, during the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025. After a dispute with the restaurant owner, where Morris accused him of bumping into his truck and hurled racist abuse, damaging the vehicle key, Morris warned 'You watch, you watch – in flames!'. He then drove to a petrol station, bought fuel, poured it into an empty milkshake bottle, and hurled the makeshift petrol bomb at the restaurant’s extension. Above the extension were bedrooms housing eight members of staff and two children, putting multiple people in significant risk of physical harm. The petrol bomb caused only minor damage, and firefighters were called as a precaution with no flames to extinguish.

Matthew Lewis, aged 22 at the time, from Gelli Rhwy Road, Garndiffaith, engaged in sexualised conversations with decoy profiles he believed to be three underage girls, one claiming to be 12 years old, between 21 July and 1 August 2021. He was caught by paedophile hunters.

David Cwiklinski, 52, of Kensington Park, Magor, Monmouthshire, amassed nearly 1,000 indecent images and videos of children, including 44 category A (most severe), 45 category B, and 909 category C. The material included harrowing content such as a blindfolded five-year-old girl being abused by two women and a man, another five-year-old being raped, and a toddler being sexually assaulted. This occurred shortly after his release from a previous prison sentence in 2025 for distributing and making indecent images of children, for which he was sentenced in 2021. Officers raided his home in January 2026 and uncovered the material.

Sean Hennessey drove a van while drunk from a Tremorfa street shortly after 11.30pm on March 22 and failed to stop for police. During the pursuit he drove dangerously through residential areas before being cornered. After he was pulled from the van he resisted arrest and punched a police officer repeatedly to the head and face. Despite PAVA spray being used, he broke free and fled, but was arrested shortly afterwards by officers from the dog section.

Taylor Penny Soraya Williams participated in the activities of an organised crime group connected to the CC drugs line operating across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Williams pleaded guilty to the offence.

On 2 September 2024, police and probation workers visited Martin Phillip Simms' home unannounced and examined his mobile phone, finding evidence of use of a teen chat room app on a different device. Simms admitted to possessing a second device, which he handed over; inspection revealed he had deleted the teen chat app and its internet history, and failed to register the username with police as required. The device also held two other social media apps for chatting with young people, with unregistered usernames. These breaches violated the conditions of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibited deleting internet history, required production of digital devices for inspection, and mandated informing police of online usernames within three days.

Wesley Davies punched the victim, a consultant emergency nurse, outside an Esso petrol station on Newport Road in Cardiff on July 31, 2021, following an argument over a taxi. The victim was knocked unconscious, sustaining a deep wound to the back of his head that required 21 surgical staples to close. He suffered ongoing memory loss, psychological harm, missed work for four weeks, and had to cancel a family holiday. The assault was captured on CCTV and had significant consequences for the victim.

Gareth Moreton-Jenkins was convicted of wounding with intent after attacking his then partner. He received an extended sentence of 10 years and six months.

On Sunday, November 30, 2025, John Robinson was spotted by police at the Asda filling station in Cwmbran, behaving suspiciously. He was in a Mitsubishi Outlander with a male passenger. Officers found him carrying a realistic imitation pistol, later confirmed to be a dysfunctional imitation firearm. As they tried to remove Robinson from the vehicle, he accelerated away from the forecourt while wearing handcuffs and with the doors still open, striking one officer. He was arrested shortly afterwards at Cwmbran Stadium. Robinson admitted dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, and possession of an imitation firearm. The court heard he had accumulated 37 previous convictions for 98 offences, including a 10-year prison sentence in 2013 for robbery and firearms, and he had previously been jailed for four months and banned for 44 months for dangerous driving. Judge Daniel Williams told him, 'This was highly dangerous driving and you tried to evade the police.' Robinson was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, a three-year driving ban following release, and must pass an extended retest before driving again. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge.

On February 21, 2021, at around 1pm in Barry, 43-year-old Jonathan Todd, of Pontalun Close, approached a woman with her two young daughters while acting strangely and unsteady on his feet. He took a glass bottle from his backpack, smashed it on the kerb, held it by the neck, wielded it towards her from about five feet away, threatened to 'f****** kill you', motioned as if to cut his throat, and gestured threateningly to a witness. The woman screamed, pushed her pram away with one daughter, and the other daughter hid in a nearby garden. Todd walked away after a bus arrived. He was arrested the next day at his flat.

Ethan Knight subjected his girlfriend to a sustained pattern of physical abuse between May 2024 and May 2025. The most serious incident occurred on May 29, 2025, when after drinking at the Bush Inn in Llantwit Fardre, he placed his right hand over her nose and mouth and squeezed tightly, attempting to suffocate her. He then dragged her by her hair, snatched her phone when she tried to call the police, and fled. On May 18, 2024, at a caravan park in Weymouth, he punched her in the face and kicked her repeatedly until she lost consciousness. On July 19, 2024, at a B&B in Burnham-on-Sea, he punched and kicked her repeatedly during an argument, leaving her with a black eye. The victim described severe psychological harm, including anxiety, suicidal thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, and living in constant fear.

Dean Durham, 42, of Llantrisant Road, Graig, Pontypridd, strangled his partner on two separate occasions. The first assault occurred on August 10, 2024, at Court Colman Manor near Bridgend, where he directed sly remarks and accusations at her before pinning her against a bed, pressing his knees onto her chest, and squeezing her throat until she lost consciousness, leaving bruising to her neck. The second attack took place in the early hours of March 22, 2025, at his partner’s home in Llanharan, where he strangled her as witnessed by her children who were outside prompting a police call. Officers found him kneeling with hands on head; he admitted getting drunk on five cans of Strongbow.

Dylan Dawes, 50, a former BBC producer, had more than 6,000 indecent images of children on his devices seized by police in 2022 from his Cardiff home. He denied the offences, claiming someone else may have used the devices left at BBC Cardiff HQ. He was convicted at Cardiff Crown Court in April and sentenced at Newport Crown Court.

On August 1, 2024, police stopped Daniel Baker on the eastbound M4 between junctions 24 and 25 near Newport after he was seen using a mobile phone while driving. Suspecting he was under the influence of drugs, officers planned to search him, but he became aggressive. During the struggle an officer's Taser fell from its holster; Baker grabbed it and aimed it at the officer, who disarmed him after punching him. Police later found a small amount of cocaine on Baker.

David Pincott pretended to be a 14-year-old boy online and groomed an 11-year-old girl, travelling from Wales to Scotland to meet her. He was caught after attempting to groom a 12-year-old girl who was actually an undercover police officer, sending graphic sexualised messages.
