Motivated by a long-standing grudge, paranoia, and resentment after being fired three years earlier and receiving an eviction notice, Olsen entered the shop at 2.45pm, fired the shot, then fired another into the air before attempting to take a staff member hostage. He had visited the shop multiple times that afternoon claiming he wanted permission to shoot a duck. He covered her body with a quilt, armed himself with a realistic-looking BB handgun, and went on a rampage, terrorising people on the streets including putting the gun to David Bowles' head and pointing it at a postman and a 12-year-old girl, before entering Morrisons supermarket in Wincheap where he waved the gun, causing panic among shoppers. Armed police shot him in the arm when he refused to surrender and aimed the weapon at them. His actions were an apparent suicide-by-cop attempt following the murder.
