On July 6, 1996, Michael Stone attacked Lin Russell, 45, and her daughters Josie, 9, and Megan, 6, along with their dog Lucy, on a quiet country lane in Chillenden near Dover, Kent. Stone, wielding a claw hammer, demanded money, tied them up, and bludgeoned Lin and Megan to death. Josie was blindfolded, tied to a tree, and bludgeoned but survived. The family was walking home from a school swimming gala. Stone was linked to the crime through bloodstained clothes, a hammer in his car, and witness statements. No direct forensic evidence linked him, but he was convicted based on circumstantial evidence and jailhouse confessions he denies.
Convicted of the murders of Lin Russell and Megan Russell, and the attempted murder of Josie Russell. First conviction in 1998 quashed, second conviction in 2001. Has maintained innocence and multiple appeals failed. Current review by CCRC.
