Thomas Steven
Dangerous driving *
Sentence
12 months imprisonment and 3.5 year driving ban
On April 8, 2018, in the early hours, Thomas Steven, driving a Land Rover Discovery in Sudbury town centre, was suspected of drinking. When police attempted to stop him at 3am in Waldingfield Road, he drove on the pavement to escape, then led a high-speed chase on the A134 towards Colchester, reaching 75mph in 30mph limits. He drove on the wrong side of the road around a blind bend, turned onto a lane and farm track, entered a ploughed field, reversed towards police, and got stuck in two ditches. Found drunk at the wheel, almost three times the drink-drive limit, with a distraught female passenger. Made racist remarks to officers during arrest and custody, including 'I don’t make bombs – why am I in cuffs?', and struggled violently against handcuffs.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, being over the drink-drive limit, failing to stop for police and racially aggravated harassment. Previous drink-drive conviction in 2016. Defence claimed drink may have been spiked and bizarre behaviour due to personal circumstances.
