Jason Stringer, 47, deliberately started a fire in his bathroom at his flat in Manton, Bretton, Peterborough in February. He called the fire service after igniting the fire and initially blamed it on fireworks, then on a discarded cigarette. Firefighters arrived to find smoke from the bathroom window and extinguished the blaze. An investigation confirmed the fire was started deliberately, endangering his own life and those of other residents.

Isaac Barry, 33, stole a basket full of alcohol from the external stockroom of Premier Store in Eastfield Road, Peterborough, on the morning of January 2. He threatened a staff member by raising a bottle of wine and escaped. Later that morning, he returned and threatened two men with a knife outside a property in Eastfield Road before fleeing in a car.

Admitted robbery and threatening a person with a blade. DC Guiste described the incident as a terrifying experience and emphasised that robbery is a serious offence.

Paul Mason

Theft

Sentence: £518.71 compensation and £120 fine

Paul Mason, a 51-year-old from Leavesden Road, Watford, stole £518.71 worth of various books from Hatchards inside St Pancras International Railway Station on January 28. He appeared in court, admitted to the theft, and was sentenced accordingly.

Admitted to theft from a shop. No costs ordered as compensation was deemed to be the priority.

Nikolass Pekstins

Drug Dealing

Sentence: 2.5 years in a Young Offender Institution

Nikolass Pekstins was involved in drug dealing offences starting from April 2021 when he was 15 years old. He was arrested on 1 May 2024 after police found drugs worth up to £15,000, including cannabis, MDMA, LSD, and ketamine, at a house in Fletton, Peterborough, following the sudden death of a 19-year-old woman at the property. Additionally, in June 2023, he was involved in an incident where he was drunk and disorderly in Peterborough city centre, possessed a knuckleduster (an illegal weapon), and was racially abusive towards a Special constable.

Pled guilty to eight offences dating back to April 2021, including drug dealing and a racially aggravated public order offence.

Murtaza Syed

Coercive and Controlling Behaviour

Sentence: 2 years and 6 months imprisonment

Murtaza Syed coercively controlled his wife for two years, subjecting her to mental and physical abuse. This included enforcing rules to humiliate and degrade her, such as not allowing her to shut the bathroom door, examining her body for signs of adultery, depriving her of a phone or electronic devices, and preventing her from leaving the house unaccompanied. The most recent assault occurred on February 18, when he threw a lighter at her eye and punched her repeatedly to the head. The abuse was reported to police on February 23.

Pled guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour and one count of causing actual bodily harm. A restraining order was made indefinitely to prevent contact with the victim.

Dillon Farrar

Possession with intent to supply cocaine and heroin

Sentence: four years imprisonment

Dillon Farrar was arrested on April 20, 2024, in St Johns Road, Fletton, while on an electric scooter. Officers suspected him of drug dealing and intervened when he attempted to ride away. He resisted arrest, leading to the use of PAVA spray. A search revealed a 'Rambo' knife in his waistband and 37 wraps of class A drugs in his jacket pockets.

Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and heroin, possession of a knife in a public place, and possession of cannabis. Also received six penalty points on his driving licence for riding an e-scooter without insurance. Detective Constable Emily Richardson commented on the proactive work of neighbourhood officers.
