John Edward Bates, a former Scout leader and police officer, abused his position of trust to sexually assault young boys in the Scout movement. Between approximately 1975 and 1982, he indecently assaulted 11 boys aged between 11 and 15. The abuse came to light after an investigation by Lincolnshire Police, leading to his conviction at Nottingham Crown Court in July 1983.

Mr Justice Park stated: "It is plain that since 1975 you have been a menace to all boy scouts between the ages of 11 and 15, right up to 1982 when at long last your activities were brought to light. You introduced these boys, either willingly or unwillingly, to the most disgusting sexual practices".

John McNee and Craig Morgan, wearing gloves and balaclavas, forced their way into a home in Canterbury Close, Nuthall on 25 June 2025. A man inside jumped out of an upstairs window, breaking his leg. They tried and failed to steal a vehicle and fled with £500 in cash and a mobile phone. They were identified from CCTV and mobile phone data. McNee also admitted intimidating a witness by phoning a relative of the victim and a separate burglary in Nottingham city centre in September 2023.

John Lamb

John Lamb, a 66-year-old former teacher from Loughborough, was found guilty of 10 counts of indecent assault against four boys. The offences took place during the 1990s and early 2000s, both at Nottingham High School where he worked and at his home on Park Road, Loughborough. Three victims were pupils at the school; the fourth was met at a cricket match and later shown around Loughborough University. The assaults involved groping and indecent contact, including incidents in confined spaces at school. One victim described being 'trapped in a confined space' and groped after Lamb 'targeted' him. Another said it 'clouded my thinking over my sexuality'. A third spoke of the significant and sustained long-term impact. Judge Sally Hancox called Lamb an intelligent and manipulative man who exploited victims for control and forced them to relive the abuse at trial. He was cleared of one count but convicted on the remaining 10.

On 22 January 2022, Joshua Bojko launched a road rage attack after his Audi was involved in a minor collision with an HGV on the A608 Old Derby Road near Nottingham. After shouting abuse, Bojko punched the lorry driver in the face when he got out to check for damage, knocking him to the ground. The victim suffered fractures to both sides of his jaw, nose and eye socket, requiring surgery. Bojko was traced via ANPR footage, arrested and pleaded guilty.

Joseph Lubasi stabbed a 17-year-old boy in the chest and abdomen in Mansfield Road, Redhill, at around 2am on May 25, 2018, following an argument. The victim suffered a perforated stomach and liver, collapsed, and required intensive care. In a separate incident on October 22, 2017, in Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, Lubasi grabbed a 20-year-old man by the throat, punched him in the head, threatened to stab him, and forced him to use his bank card to buy cigarettes at a Tesco shop.

Josh Mills-Afford, a 37-year-old French teacher of West Bridgford, targeted two 17-year-old secondary school pupils during separate school trips years apart. The relationships involved sexual touching at a cinema and in a car park, full sexual intercourse, requests for naked images, and kissing one victim in a classroom cupboard after she tried to end the relationship. He also purchased alcohol for the second victim. Both victims provided impact statements describing emotional harm, guilt and disrupted education.
Pleaded guilty to 11 charges of sexual activity with a girl while being an adult and abusing his position of trust and one count of possession of an indecent image of a child. No previous convictions. Judge Mark Watson rejected defence suggestion it was not grooming and emphasised breach of trust and power imbalance.

Joseph Chattaway

In August 2020, Joseph Chattaway attacked his parents with a hammer in Mapperley, repeatedly striking them and causing serious injuries. The attack left his father with a brain injury requiring ongoing treatment, while his mother was discharged from hospital later that month.

He then took her on a week-long journey across the UK, driving from Whitby to Derbyshire, London, and Cornwall. The ordeal ended when police found them on Marazion Beach on 16 October 2021, leading to his arrest.

In the early hours of 29 April 2023, Jason Pride drove his Vauxhall Corsa through Retford without lights, swerving across the road. An unmarked police car observed him and when Pride noticed, he sped up to 60mph in a 30mph zone on London Road, weaving erratically. He then misjudged a turn at a mini roundabout, crashed into a bollard, knocked over a lamppost, and the car ended up on two wheels before beaching. He tried to flee but was detained and failed a roadside breath test, blowing three times the legal limit. He was charged with dangerous driving and drink-driving.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drink-driving. Blown three times the legal limit. Also disqualified from driving for three years and must retake driving test.

In the early hours of 5 May 2025, a student was violently attacked by a group of men outside Fusion Sports Bar on St James's Street, Nottingham, after they had all been ejected. The victim was pushed to the ground, repeatedly kicked, punched and stamped on, leaving him unconscious and bleeding. He was taken to hospital with head injuries but made a recovery without long-term brain damage. Jayden Gunter was among the four defendants and pleaded guilty to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. He also admitted several unrelated offences. The judge noted the group had acted together before calmly walking away, leaving the victim defenceless.

Jamie Watkins, 29, of Moor Lane, Calverton, operated two businesses, Abbey Rowe Ltd and Hywood Consultants Ltd, with Callum Clay. They cold-called small businesses nationwide, offering to reduce business rates. They completed free online applications to the Valuation Office Agency but never followed up with evidence, resulting in no reductions. They charged each business £399 or £499 and aggressively chased payment. The scam involved nearly 3,500 businesses, netting approximately £220,000, with a potential gain of over £1.6 million. Found guilty of fraud at Nottingham Crown Court.

On 6 March 2017 at Oxengate, Arnold, near Tesco Express, Jarrelle Hayden took offence at two men at a friend’s house and became aggressive. He dragged one outside, and when the other tried to intervene, Hayden stabbed him in the back, causing wounds that required stitches. He then stabbed the first man twice, including a serious stomach wound that needed an operation, before running off. He was identified through witness accounts and CCTV but evaded capture for nearly a year before being arrested in February 2018.
Pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article. Detective Sergeant Roni Isembert said the case showed the consequences of carrying a knife.

James McCarthy, 25, killed teacher and author Julie Semper, 47, at her flat on Magdala Road, Nottingham. On the evening of 30 January 2015, after reconnecting following a casual relationship, they argued and he hit her in the face, choked her, and stabbed her multiple times. He stayed in the flat for hours before leaving, taking her purse and keys. Her body was found by a colleague on 4 February 2015. While on remand at Nottingham Prison, on 2 June 2015, he entered another prisoner’s cell, strangled and stamped on him, leaving the victim in a coma for weeks. He pleaded guilty to both offences.
Pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder. The judge reduced the aggregate minimum term by one year, resulting in 28 years before parole eligibility.
James Stacey
Conspiracy to supply cocaine *

James Stacey, 30, of Forest Road, Mansfield, was the ringleader of a gang supplying cocaine, MDMA, cannabis and steroids across Nottinghamshire. He enjoyed a lavish lifestyle with two houses and two high-value cars despite a declared income of £15,000 as a mechanic. When police executed search warrants in August 2013, he was seen attempting to dispose of white powder at his workplace; the powder was analysed and found to be cocaine and MDMA. He ran a network of lower-level dealers, many in debt to him, and used intimidation to enforce drug debts. Drugs and a cannabis grow with a street value of almost £40,000 were found at his associates' properties.
Pleaded guilty. Described as ringleader of the conspiracy, using his workplace to exchange drugs and enforcing drug debts through intimidation.

Kielb sustained life-threatening head injuries and an open hand fracture. Sebastian Wojciechowski was sentenced for kidnap and causing grievous bodily harm.

Scot Fox amassed a collection of over 400,000 child sexual abuse images over approximately 20 years. He was arrested at his home in September 2020 after police linked him to online purchases of indecent material. Officers seized electronic devices and found a total of 402,017 photographs and videos, including more than 7,500 category A images depicting the most serious acts of sexual abuse against children. He immediately admitted his offending and later pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children (saving and storing the material).

Between July and October 2023, Scott Gallagher committed two burglaries at shops in Colwick and Sneinton. On July 18 and September 17, he entered stores pretending to be a customer, then went into staff rooms and stole bank cards and cash from coat pockets. On October 10, he pickpocketed a wallet from a customer at a corner shop in Sneinton Dale. When arrested an hour later, he was found in possession of crack cocaine and heroin.
Pleaded guilty to two burglaries, one theft, and two counts of possessing Class A drugs. Crack cocaine and heroin were found in his possession upon arrest.

On 7 November 2017, at about 6.15pm, the victims were having a drink in their garden bar at Linden Grove, Gedling, when Hatherley and Thomas Bullivant burst in shouting 'where's the money?'. They tied the couple's wrists, and Bullivant held a knife against the husband's face, punched him, and kicked him in the chest. The husband was forced to crawl back to his wife. The couple were then tied together by their waists. The robbers demanded money and threatened the victims. They locked the bound couple in the bar, searched the house, and stole the couple's vehicles. Hatherley was later identified through DNA evidence on the tape used to bind the victims.
Convicted after a week-long trial. Also found guilty of possession of a bladed article.

Ryan Chadwick, 28, of College Street, Long Eaton, Derbyshire, committed a string of sexual offences against three girls aged under 16 over several months. Met the first victim on Snapchat in February 2020, offered her money for sex, and had sex with her twice. Assaulted a second girl under 13 and attempted to rape her twice in May 2020. Had sex with a third underage girl on two occasions.
Pleaded guilty to several counts of assault by penetration and sexual activity with a child, two counts of inciting a child into sexual activity, two counts of attempted rape of a child, and paying for the sexual services of a child. Must serve a minimum of two thirds. Given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order preventing contact with girls under 16, ordered to sign the sex offender register for life, and banned from working with children. Showed no remorse.

Abuse began as young as age seven for one victim, culminating in three rapes when she was a teenager. He was caught after sending an explicit image to a schoolgirl in 2019, leading to investigations and further victims coming forward.

Unsworth committed a series of offences between 10 October and 8 November 2019, including shop theft, attempted theft from motor vehicle, possession of cannabis and being carried in a motor vehicle without consent.

Samuel Smith, aged 34, of North Muskham, fraudulently sold vehicles through his businesses Your Car Now, Your Car Supermarket, SC Motor Group and Your Car Centre between June 2018 and September 2020. He failed to disclose that the vehicles had been involved in collisions and were often Category D ‘write off’ cars. Customers experienced breakdowns, needed significant repairs costing thousands, false claims of RAC breakdown cover, and one car falsely represented as UK registered. In one case, an airbag had been disconnected. Proceeds funded a lavish lifestyle including overseas holidays to Dubai and Monaco, luxury cars like a Ferrari, and property maintenance.
Found guilty of conspiracy to defraud following a trial. Ordered to pay £23,614 in compensation. Investigation by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team.

Sarel Van Der Merwe, aged 41, of Carter Lane, Mansfield, sexually abused an underage girl on three occasions. He kissed and sucked her breasts, touched her vagina and got her to masturbate him to ejaculation. The abuse left the victim paralysed by fear, haunted by hallucinations, seeing him as a black figure, leading to self-harm attempts and the removal of mirrors from the home. It ruined her childhood.
Pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, and two charges of causing a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity. Sexual harm prevention order for 10 years. Of previous good character. Judge Gregory Dickinson QC: 'This is serious sexual abuse. You used her as a sexual plaything. It has ruined her childhood.'
Steven Woolley

On 25 August 2017, Steven Woolley and Rebecca Newcombe visited John Inger's flat in Walton Court, Carlton. An argument broke out and Woolley attacked Newcombe, who fled around 1:30am on 26 August. Woolley then carried out a sustained and unprovoked assault on 48-year-old John Inger, causing fatal injuries. Woolley later made a false call to police claiming he found Inger dead. He was arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty to murder.

Lambley was also among a group that attacked a man walking across the Forest Recreation Ground on 19 March 2019, punching and kicking him before stealing his mobile phone and other items including a laptop.

In November 2015, 15-year-old Kayleigh Haywood was groomed online by Luke Harlow. On 13 November 2015, she went to Harlow's flat and was kept prisoner. Stephen Beadman, Harlow's neighbour, met her on 14 November. Between 14-15 November, both men falsely imprisoned her. In the early hours of 15 November, a neighbour witnessed Beadman chasing the partially clothed Kayleigh as she tried to flee. On 20 February 2020, Stephen Dewan was seen driving a black van erratically in Colwick during rush hour. Police received a tip-off that the driver appeared drunk and located the vehicle, signalling it to stop. Dewan initially pulled over but then swore at officers and sped off, swerving onto the wrong side of the road and causing other drivers to take evasive action. Due to heavy traffic and pedestrians, police followed at a distance before finding the van parked in Douglas Avenue. Dewan was arrested and a roadside breath test showed 136 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, almost four times the legal limit of 35µg. He later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop, drink-driving and driving without insurance.

Steven Edgar, 18, raped an 11-year-old boy between December 26 and 27, 2017 at Edgar's home in Arnold. The victim fell asleep while watching a film with Edgar after consuming cider and cannabis provided by Edgar. He woke up naked to find indecent images on his phone. Edgar was also naked on the other side of the bed. Edgar threatened to beat the victim if he told anyone. The victim later reported the rape to his mother.
Pleaded guilty. Also made subject of a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must sign the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely. Victim was an 11-year-old boy.

When police arrived they discovered weapons, a cannabis grow, weighing scales, drugs bags, and a machete and drugs in his car.

Shaun Wheeler, aged 56, a former constable with Lincolnshire Police based at Boston station, exploited his role to pursue sexual relationships with vulnerable women. The primary incident involved a woman who had reported harassment and abuse; Wheeler attended her home to take a statement but instead engaged in sexual activity with her. He sent over 3,000 messages and later returned under the guise of a vulnerability assessment, despite her suicidal thoughts, and sent explicit videos and photographs. A second woman received sexually inappropriate messages while he was on duty, and after resigning in 2019 he volunteered at a mental health support group where he allegedly sent sexual messages to a vulnerable female participant. The offences were described as an appalling abuse of power.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of misconduct in a public office. Former Lincolnshire Police officer who abused his position to initiate sexual relationships with vulnerable women he met on duty, including one who had reported abuse. Shaun Kennelly drove his mother's stolen car at nearly 80mph through Newark town centre in a 30mph zone, ignoring police and driving on the wrong side of the road. He rammed a police car, abandoned the vehicle, and hid injured outside the home of an 86-year-old woman. Unaware of his crimes, she invited him in to bandage his wound. He then grabbed her by the throat, forced her to hand over money, and fled. He was arrested the next day and faced charges of robbery, dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, and criminal damage.
Pleaded guilty to all charges. Also given a 10-year restraining order and a 3-year driving ban after release. Police described his actions as 'absolutely despicable and callous'.

On 22 April 2019 at a flat in Main Road, Gedling, Shaun Miller repeatedly punched and kicked a woman, causing four broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken eye socket, two black eyes, a cut to her head and damage to her teeth. He also smashed her mobile phone. The victim alerted a friend by sending a picture of her injuries. Miller initially denied the offences but changed his plea on the first day of trial.

Classified as a dangerous offender with an extended 3-year term due to past offences.
