He converted from Islam to Christianity in 2018, claiming he faces execution if returned to Iran.

The attack occurred in front of horrified customers and staff while Johal was queuing to withdraw money to pay his restaurant staff. Johal was declared dead at the scene. Nur was arrested later that day at his address and had an ongoing asylum appeal at the time.
