Sentence: 1 year imprisonment
Morteza Araghi, a 36-year-old asylum seeker from Iran, entered the UK illegally twice on small boats from France. The first entry was on September 21, 2022, when he was intercepted by the UK Border Force in Dover after traveling from Iran on foot to Turkey, then to Greece, by lorry to Germany, and to the asylum seeker's camp in Calais. He claimed asylum but failed to attend interviews, voluntarily left the UK, and ended up in Rwanda. He re-entered illegally on August 7, 2025, again intercepted in Dover, claiming he flew to Germany on a false passport. His second asylum application was turned down on November 12, 2025, for lacking valid information to reside in the UK. After the second entry, he was housed in an asylum seeker's hotel in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, but was later kicked out and became homeless before returning to the hotel. He converted from Islam to Christianity in 2018, claiming he faces execution if returned to Iran.
