Siah Singh Riley, 36, of Normanton, Derby, used social media platforms to contact young teenagers, befriend them, and persuade them to send explicit images. He later stockpiled those images and used them to blackmail victims into sending more. A total of 152 victims were identified. In 24 cases, Riley threatened to publish images online if the victims did not comply with his demands. Analysis of electronic devices revealed 145 charges including causing a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual communication with a child, causing or inciting the making of indecent images of children, and blackmail.

On 22 October at a house in Valley Road, Shirebrook, Derbyshire, Logan Procter, 20, used two knives to inflict more than 70 wounds to his stepfather Christopher Owen, 57, and 15 stab injuries to the family Jack Russell dog, Poppy, killing both. Procter had a stash of knives and Samurai swords at the home and possessed multiple 'kill lists' on his phones targeting family, work colleagues, and college peers, along with searches on torture and cannibalism. He called 999 with extreme calmness after the attack, stating he wanted to end so many lives and had planned to go much further.
Pleaded guilty to murder in January. Judge Shaun Smith KC described the killing as brutal, sustained and frenzied. Defence noted bullying and mental health problems; defendant expressed sorrow.

Miles Henshaw, 58, of St Annes Close, Derby, sneaked up behind a 70-year-old pensioner near Full Street, Derby, at about 1.45pm on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and snatched her handbag. He was captured on CCTV loitering in the city centre before following a couple and approaching the victim from behind. The victim's partner chased Henshaw, alerting members of the public who helped recover the handbag, though Henshaw initially escaped. Police identified him from CCTV and arrested him. He also admitted a second robbery where he stole cash from a man in Abbey Street, Nottingham, on Monday, August 4.

He borrowed a lighter from another man, threw it to the floor, then knocked one man to the ground and threw a glass into the face of another who tried to intervene. Both victims needed hospital treatment. He then punched a pursuing police officer to the head, leaving a black eye. He was arrested at the scene. In a separate incident, two tractors were stolen from a business in Pinxton on 8 January after a metal security guard was removed; Creighton's fingerprints were found on the guard. He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assaulting a police officer, and the theft.

A search of his property revealed suspected Class A drugs in a yellow Selfridges bag in a bedroom. For the second victim, he committed assault by penetration of a child under 13, assault by touching of a child under 13, and causing a child under 13 to look at an image of sexual activity. The abuse was reported to police, leading to his arrest in November 2024. He was charged, remanded into custody, and tried in April 2025.

Saqib Ali, a 24-year-old bogus boiler repair man, targeted vulnerable victims by calling at their homes pretending to fix boilers. On March 27, he and another man attended a victim's home in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, after the victim contacted him via an online advertisement. They dismantled the boiler unnecessarily, used the victim's phone under the pretense of accessing the internet, and stole hundreds of pounds from inside his mobile phone case before leaving. Two days later, on March 29, they targeted a second victim in Derbyshire for boiler servicing, but nothing was taken. Police searched Ali's home and found cash, numerous mobile phones, paperwork for trade work under different companies, and a passport belonging to another man. Ali initially denied the offences but later pleaded guilty.
Pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and handling stolen goods. Preyed on vulnerable victims including one in Stoke-on-Trent.

The premature baby weighed four pounds and could not be held for three weeks.

Anna Podedworna

Anna Podedworna murdered her partner Izabela Zablocka in late August 2010 at their home at 113 Princes Street, Derby, by bludgeoning her to death in a violent rage shortly after Izabela's last phone call to her family on August 28, 2010. Podedworna, an experienced butcher, then dismembered the body by severing it at the waist with a large knife, placed the remains in two plastic bags, and buried them under concrete in a makeshift grave in the rear garden. She concealed the crime for 15 years by lying to Izabela's family, claiming she had run off to London. The crime came to light in 2025 after pressure from a Polish journalist and missing persons charity prompted Podedworna to contact police, leading to the discovery of the remains in June 2025 via DNA testing.
Convicted on charges of murder, perverting the course of justice, and preventing a lawful burial. Judge Justice Heather Williams KC highlighted many serious aggravating features, including the concealment of the crime for 15 years and the profound impact on the victim's daughter.

Shabir Sultani, 27, of Sturton Road, Sheffield, pretended to be a taxi driver outside a nightclub in Sheffield in spring 2025. He lured a woman into his car by offering to take her home to Chesterfield. During the journey, he offered her vodka, which she refused. Upon arrival, he followed her to her front door, forced his way into the property, ignored her repeated requests to leave, kissed her, and raped her. She managed to get him off by kicking him. He was identified via CCTV and automatic number plate recognition, arrested, and charged with rape and sexual assault.
Denied charges but found guilty after trial. Also received Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restraining order, and ordered to sign Sex Offenders’ Register.

Between June 2023 and December 2024, Green acquired 74 indecent images categorised as 17 category A (the most serious), 16 category B, and 41 category C, along with two extreme pornographic images. He admitted to making the images and to breaching a previously imposed sexual harm prevention order.

He also failed to declare bank accounts to the Official Receiver, into which victim payments were deposited.

Thomas Kniveton, a 43-year-old former software engineer from Valley Road, Killamarsh, Derbyshire, was sentenced at Chesterfield Magistrates Court sitting as Derby Crown Court for possessing an extensive collection of indecent images and videos of children. Between August 2018 and June 2023, he amassed 886,691 such files, many depicting 'distressed' children being raped and sexually abused. Police found the material on his devices; over 500,000 images remained unassessed. He used the Kodi app to save 'favourites', including videos showing children aged seven to eight being raped. Initially denying making indecent images, he admitted the charge on the day his trial was due to begin.
Pleaded guilty on the day of trial. No previous convictions. Recorder Graham Huston stated: 'The A images relate to the rape of literally thousands of children. In accessing that material you condoned the brutal rape of each child and you are as culpable as if you were in the room while it took place.' Also imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and 25 rehabilitation activity days. Mitigation included stress, cocaine addiction, ceasing alcohol, insomnia medication, and a pernicious anaemia diagnosis.

Morteza Araghi, a 36-year-old asylum seeker from Iran, entered the UK illegally twice on small boats from France. The first entry was on September 21, 2022, when he was intercepted by the UK Border Force in Dover after traveling from Iran on foot to Turkey, then to Greece, by lorry to Germany, and to the asylum seeker's camp in Calais. He claimed asylum but failed to attend interviews, voluntarily left the UK, and ended up in Rwanda. He re-entered illegally on August 7, 2025, again intercepted in Dover, claiming he flew to Germany on a false passport. His second asylum application was turned down on November 12, 2025, for lacking valid information to reside in the UK. After the second entry, he was housed in an asylum seeker's hotel in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, but was later kicked out and became homeless before returning to the hotel. He converted from Islam to Christianity in 2018, claiming he faces execution if returned to Iran.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of arriving in the UK illegally. Judge commented that he breached the hospitality offered by the country and questioned the genuineness of his asylum claim due to failure to cooperate with the process. No previous convictions in the UK.

Police raided his former home in Chilham Way, Boulton Moor, Derby, on April 16, 2025, following intelligence linking him to a line phone. They found a hidden car key that unlocked a nearby vehicle containing drugs worth over £30,000. An investigation revealed he exploited vulnerable teenagers to sell drugs and used homes of drug users and vulnerable adults as dealing bases.

Kadir refused to leave the train and became aggressive when the staff member returned with a colleague, grabbing one by the neck and strangling him while shouting and swearing at another.

Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Normanton, born in Somalia and having paid £400 to be smuggled into the UK illegally via a small boat in September 2024, randomly selected and stabbed Gurvinder Singh Johal, known as Danny, 37, a father-of-three and son of the owner of Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill in West Bromwich, in the chest with a knife inside a bank branch in Derby city centre on the afternoon of May 6, 2025. The attack occurred in front of horrified customers and staff while Johal was queuing to withdraw money to pay his restaurant staff. Johal was declared dead at the scene. Nur was arrested later that day at his address and had an ongoing asylum appeal at the time.
Pleaded guilty to murder. Judge Smith described the act as a brutal and callous random stabbing in broad daylight. Time already spent in custody counts towards the minimum term.

Phillip Wallbank, 37, of Quebec Avenue in Blackpool, sexually abused a young girl starting when she was 8 years old. The abuse included sexual activity in her presence, assault by touching, rape, and assault by penetration, all against a child under 13. He videoed his acts and possessed indecent images of children. He was charged with 12 counts: four of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 13, two of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, two of raping a girl under 13, three of assaulting a girl under 13 by penetration, and one of making indecent images of a child. Police seized his phone and found over 1,000 category C images and videos, 15 category B, and four category A indecent images. In a prepared statement to police, he denied the allegations and called the victim 'unreliable and vindictive'. The victim disclosed the abuse to school staff, prompting an investigation by Derbyshire Constabulary. Wallbank later admitted all charges.

On February 13, 2025, at a friend's home in Alfreton, Daniel Nash, 34, of no fixed address, engaged in a two-hour violent attack on his girlfriend following an argument. He kicked down a bathroom door, punched her face multiple times, held a knife to her throat, stabbed her leg with a kitchen knife, poured boiling water on her while she shielded herself with a coat, hit her with bolt croppers fracturing her ankle, attempted to sever her fingers with a knife and an axe, and hit her with a dog lead. On September 26, 2025, Jamie Birks, 38, of no fixed abode, stole a spade from a council worker's trolley in Derby city centre and swung it at advertising boards and bystanders on St Peter's Street. He was tackled to the ground by a member of the public and restrained by two PCSOs. While being held down, he assaulted the officers by hitting and kicking them. After being transported to a police station, he lunged at an officer in his cell and bit him on the leg, issued threats, headbutted an officer on the leg, and spat at another.
Pleaded guilty to five counts of assaulting emergency workers. Became violent towards officers after arrest, including hitting, kicking, lunging, biting, headbutting, and spitting.
