On 15 August 2023, Abdul Sami, 22, strangled his 41-year-old stepmother Rizwana Kousar to death using her own headscarf at their shared family home in Kensington Street, Girlington. He called an ambulance claiming he found her half in and half out of a bath with her head submerged, but paramedics noticed a red mark on her neck. She was found unconscious, never regained consciousness, and died two days later from a brain injury caused by lack of oxygen. Prior to the attack, Sami had searched websites about inheritance and 'Does a killer inherit from their victim's estate?'.
Denied murder but found guilty by unanimous jury verdict after less than three and a half hours of deliberation. Judge commented on profound grief caused to family and implausibilities in his account.
