Supplying controlled drugs *
Sentence
12 months imprisonment
Balkeet Singh Khaira, a pharmacist at Khaira Pharmacy in West Bromwich owned by his mother, diverted 29,105 packets of controlled drugs including Diazepam, Nitrazepam, Tramadol, Zolpidem, and Zopiclone from the legal supply chain to criminals on the black market between February 2016 and August 2017. The drugs had a black market value of over £1m, and he made nearly £60,000 from the supply. He ordered excessive amounts under pressure from a pharmacy employee linked to a criminal gang and threats from three men. He altered dispensing records, pretended to be his mother in communications with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), leading to her temporary arrest despite her innocence. The scheme was uncovered through investigations by the MHRA, GPhC, and police following an unannounced inspection in February 2018, resulting in his arrest.
Confessed to five charges of supplying controlled drugs. Judge Heidi Kubik noted the seriousness of the offences, the diversion of 29,000 packs of Class C drugs to the black market with a street value of £1,052,000, and the impact on his mother's business and reputation.
