Philip Tolley

Philip Tolley, 58, of Quinton, Birmingham, groomed and got a vulnerable 16-year-old girl drunk before raping her while she slept at his flat on Wedgewood Road in 2020. He had previously touched her leg inappropriately and mentioned pornographic films. On the day of the attack, the intoxicated victim fell asleep on a mattress; Tolley joined her, groped and attempted to kiss her, then raped her while she was unconscious. After she woke and realised what had happened, Tolley insisted she take a bath to eliminate forensic evidence and joined her in the bathroom. He then walked her to a bus stop, tried to kiss her again, and repeatedly urged her not to tell anyone. The girl reported the assault later that day.

Pleaded guilty to rape. Judge Richard Bond noted Tolley’s attempt to destroy forensic evidence by making the victim bathe immediately after the assault. Two positive character references were read out, prompting audible gasps in court, but the judge stressed that good character carries less weight in rape cases. Tolley had a previously clean record and had since suffered sepsis leading to a leg amputation.

Peter Hillback was part of a gang running a £60million drugs empire from a small office on a farm in Kempsey near Worcester. The operation involved smuggling cannabis, amphetamines and MDMA from the Netherlands using legitimate hauliers unaware of the cargo. Drugs were taken to haulage yards in West Mercia and Midlands before distribution to organised crime groups across the UK. Operation Goal by Warwickshire and West Mercia Police seized £13.5million worth of drugs including over 1000kg cannabis, 107kg MDMA and 64kg amphetamines.

Peter Hogan, a 62-year-old former West Midlands Police officer and chairman of governors at Baskerville School in Harborne, Birmingham, was sentenced to one year in prison after admitting to three charges of making indecent images of children. The offences occurred between 2009 and 2016, during which detectives discovered just over 4,000 images on his computer equipment, including 243 category A images—the most severe level—with one victim believed to be as young as six years old. Hogan's arrest came in October 2016, six months after he was praised in a school newsletter for his work on an E-Safety mark. He resigned as chairman on the day of his arrest. The raid on his home in Warren Hill Road, Kingstanding, was conducted by West Midlands Police's online child sexual exploitation team. Recorder Stephen Linehan QC described the proliferation of child sexual abuse images online as a wave of criminal activity, noting the non-consensual nature and devastating impact on victims. Aggravating factors included the seven-year duration, deliberate searches, and cataloguing of images for repeated access. Hogan was also ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children. Also ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years. Recorder Stephen Linehan QC noted the non-consensual nature and aggravating factors including the seven-year duration, deliberate searches, and cataloguing of images. Previous good character and voluntary work considered.

Wahid Bik

Wahid Bik, a 43-year-old pizza delivery driver from Solihull, groomed three teenage girls by offering them vapes, alcohol, and drugs before sexually assaulting two of them and raping one in his car over a month-long period. The offences began in November 2021 when he approached a 13-year-old girl walking home alone, gave her alcohol and cannabis, and later obtained phone numbers. He messaged the girls with compliments, positioning himself as an essential figure. In December 2021, he picked up two 14-year-olds, gave them alcohol until they were intoxicated, drove to a secluded location, and sexually assaulted one. On 30-31 January 2022, he took two other girls (aged 14 and 13) to a secluded spot, supplied alcohol, touched one on the leg, kissed her, and then twice raped the 13-year-old. One victim attempted to seek help via her phone but Bik confiscated it; another managed to message a friend, leading to his arrest with the girls still in the vehicle. He was found guilty of two counts of rape, two of attempted rape, three of sexual assault, and two other serious sexual offences.

Convicted after trial. Judge Andrew Smith KC remarked: 'You chose girls who were at a vulnerable stage in their teenage lives.' Bik demonstrated no remorse.

Vaughan Davies took part in the savage torture and murder of former soldier Brian Farmer in Yardley, Birmingham. Brian Farmer, 64, a father of two who served 22 years in the Army including in Northern Ireland and the Gulf, was found dead in his Yardley flat on May 19, 2012. He had been stabbed, had broken ribs, and suffered severe bruising.

Arrested on July 18, 2014; mobile phone had images of stolen parts and opened letters addressed to him found at unit.

William Mcdonalgh

William McDonalgh, 34, accidentally knocked over a candle in his Islington Row flat in the early hours of January 14 last year. The overturned candle ignited a fierce fire, but instead of alerting anyone, McDonalgh fled the scene. He returned about 10 minutes later and saw the flames. He tried to go back inside but was overcome by thick smoke and had to retreat. Several tenants suffered smoke inhalation and required hospital treatment. Many are still dealing with the lasting trauma caused by the fire. The blaze caused an estimated £500,000 worth of damage to the building.

Pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court. Detective Constable Sonia Bahia said: 'This fire could easily have resulted in a loss of life and has traumatised the victims involved. It is only proper that the man who caused it and chose not to alert his flat mates has now been jailed for a number of years.'
