William McDonalgh, 34, accidentally knocked over a candle in his Islington Row flat in the early hours of January 14 last year. The overturned candle ignited a fierce fire, but instead of alerting anyone, McDonalgh fled the scene. He returned about 10 minutes later and saw the flames. He tried to go back inside but was overcome by thick smoke and had to retreat. Several tenants suffered smoke inhalation and required hospital treatment. Many are still dealing with the lasting trauma caused by the fire. The blaze caused an estimated £500,000 worth of damage to the building.
Pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court. Detective Constable Sonia Bahia said: 'This fire could easily have resulted in a loss of life and has traumatised the victims involved. It is only proper that the man who caused it and chose not to alert his flat mates has now been jailed for a number of years.'

Offences escalated to serious sexual assaults and rapes, including raping boys aged around 15 after grooming them under pretexts of police investigations. He categorised and sold the abuse material online, earning over £25,000. Offences committed between 1 January 2017 and 7 August 2020, affecting at least 196 victims in the UK and nearly 2,000 worldwide.

The offences came to light when the oldest victim reported the abuse, leading to a complex investigation and the other victims coming forward. He was arrested in May 2015.

Akhtar Zamir was part of a high-end vehicle theft ring that stole four luxury Audis worth almost £200,000 over five days in late September and early October 2013 from locations in Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull and Willenhall. The group used a key-copying device to extract security data from on-board computers and program it onto blank keys. Stolen vehicles included two Audi RS5s, an A5 and an A4. The cars were stripped at a chop shop in an industrial unit owned by accomplice Nakash Javaid.

Bilal Bashir, aged 27 from Alum Rock, Birmingham, absconded from HMP Hewell at the end of March 2016. On April 1, 2016, he participated in a burglary in Dorridge stealing a black Audi S5 and other valuables. Three days later, masked men used the Audi to carjack a Ferrari California from a homeowner in Dorridge, dragging him out of the vehicle. The Ferrari was later found damaged (£40,000) with dashboard ripped out. The Audi driver rammed police on the M6 and attempted to evade capture. Forensic evidence including DNA from an orange glove, mobile phone data, CCTV, and witness descriptions linked Bashir to the offences.
Guilty verdict after a five-day trial. Previously serving four years for burglary, absconded from HMP Hewell.

Charlton George Ripley Floate hacked into the Home Office and FBI websites using distributed denial of service attacks, making the Home Office site unavailable for almost an hour and a half. He used the online alias ThisIsGame0ver and planned attacks with others in chat rooms. He also possessed software to control others' computers, recorded a man performing a sex act without his knowledge via webcam, and posted the video to YouTube to humiliate him. Additionally, he possessed 111 prohibited images of children. Arrested on September 12, 2014, following investigation by West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit’s Cyber Crime team.
Pleaded guilty to distributed denial of service attacks and admitted two counts of possessing 111 prohibited images of children. Convicted of conspiracy to commit an offence contrary to section 3 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990, unauthorised act with intent to impair the operation of a computer, and unauthorised access to computer material.

While Stanciu engaged him, a third woman entered the property and stole £4,000 belonging to the victim’s daughter, £11,000 in cash from various rooms, and jewellery worth £10,000, totalling approximately £25,000. Victim noted for his sheer kindness. No items recovered.
Pivotal role in distraction burglary. Already under a community order for theft at the time. Defence cited acute grief and family bereavement but court unmoved. Marked for automatic deportation upon conclusion of sentence.

Chad Henderson, a 46-year-old US national, stabbed security guard Nathan Burton four times in the chest after barricading himself in his flat in Moseley, Birmingham in April 2021 due to rent arrears. Burton, a 27-year-old father-of-one from Wolverhampton, had attended with colleagues and a locksmith to evict him. Henderson was convicted of murder at Birmingham Crown Court in September 2023.
Convicted by majority 11-1 verdict after denying murder and claiming self-defence. Judge noted preparations to resist eviction by barricading and readiness for violent confrontation.

Cyrus Bassiri owned a four-storey property in Edgbaston with serious fire safety breaches including two non-working fire alarms, an escape route blocked by a washing machine and display cabinet, incorrectly fitted emergency lighting, and a damaged fire door. Problems were identified at Hagley Road premises in 2010 and new breaches after a March 2013 complaint. He failed to act on improvement demands over six months, conditions deteriorated, and he responded aggressively and with bullying behaviour to firefighters' concerns.
The 59-year-old had previously admitted three charges of failing to take general fire precautions and two of failing to comply with an enforcement notice. Described as a 'greedy and cynical' landlord who put 'profit before the safety of tenants' by Judge Mary Stacey. Had a prior six-month suspended sentence for fire safety breaches in 2012.

Between January 2011 and December 2012, Jamil Rehman, sole director at Electronic Waste Specialists Ltd (EWS), submitted fictitious claims for the recycling of approximately 10,600 tonnes of electronic waste, receiving payment of £1.48 million from Weeelight Ltd. EWS created forged paperwork detailing fictitious recycling. The fraud was uncovered by the Environment Agency’s National Investigations Team due to suspicious paperwork from the warehouse in Devon Street, Nechells, Birmingham.
Pleaded guilty to 1 charge of fraudulent trading on 23 January 2019. Disqualified from acting as a company director for 10 years.

Jamar Bailey, from Augustin Grove, Winson Green, gave prescription drugs containing sodium valproate to a three-week-old baby girl, who became unresponsive and was taken to hospital on 27th June 2020. Toxicology tests found the drug in the baby's milk bottle. Bailey was taking the same medication for seizures. His mobile phone had search history for 'how to poison a baby' and 'how to kill a newborn baby'. The baby survived and is now safeguarded.

18-year-old Jack Simper was involved in a break-in at a Manor Road property in Dorridge in the early hours of February 3, where wooden panels were prised from a garage door and a VW Tiguan, a Triumph motorbike and two pedal cycles were stolen. Forensic examination of the panels returned a DNA match to Simper and he was arrested from his home in Hazeldene Road, Sheldon a week later.

Jacobus Martinus Samson

Jacobus Martinus Samson was part of a gang running a £60million drugs empire from a small office on a farm in Kempsey near Worcester. The operation involved smuggling cannabis, amphetamines and MDMA from the Netherlands using legitimate hauliers unaware of the cargo. Drugs were taken to haulage yards in West Mercia and Midlands before distribution to organised crime groups across the UK. Operation Goal by Warwickshire and West Mercia Police seized £13.5million worth of drugs including over 1000kg cannabis, 107kg MDMA and 64kg amphetamines.

Jamie Chapman committed a series of serious sexual offences against children dating back a decade. The offences occurred while he worked at Audley Primary School between 2006 and 2008, Marsh Hill Primary from 2011 to 2012, St Edmund Campion School in 2013, and while coaching a football team between 2011 and 2013. He befriended boys on social media by posing as teenage girls, sent them naked pictures obtained from Google to gain trust, coerced them into sending naked pictures of themselves, and threatened to share the images unless they complied, including performing sex acts. On one occasion, he raped a teenage boy. A report on 13 January 2016 to West Midlands Police about images online led to an investigation. He was arrested on 11 October 2016 at his home in Smiths Wood, Solihull, where computer equipment revealed 63 folders each containing images of a different male. None of the victims were linked to the nursery where he worked from February 2014.
Pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to 31 offences including raping a teenage boy, 21 counts of inciting sexual activity with children and nine counts of taking, making and distributing indecent photos of children.

She reported the attack on September 19, 2015. Another woman alleged he sexually assaulted her at his home in 2014.

Harpal Singh Gill, 67, from Smethwick, previously a textile trader, set up a number of bogus clothing and textile companies between May 2007 and May 2013 to launder £35 million of drug money for crime groups across the country. No actual transactions took place; false invoices were used to disguise the money movement. He adapted the business model to meet minimum UK money laundering regulations.
Initiated and orchestrated the entire operation. Employed friend and accountant Gurpreet Singh Roewal. His Honour Judge Bond said he had taken a leading role in a sophisticated money laundering arrangement which required significant planning over a period of time. Paul Risby said he used his position as head of his family and local businessman to influence family members and associates.

Hassan Bockarie, a bouncer at a nightclub in Wolverhampton, targeted an intoxicated woman in her 20s after her works Christmas party in December 2018. With Iyoseph Derry, he bought her drinks, offered to take her and another woman home after 4am, dropped the other woman off, then drove her to a flat in Birmingham on High Street, Erdington, where he raped her.
Found guilty of rape after trial. Initially denied knowledge of the women; changed account after intelligence checks and DNA evidence. Abused position of trust as a bouncer.

In December 2018, a woman in her 20s attended a works Christmas party and later visited a nightclub in Wolverhampton. Hassan Bockerie and Iyoseph Derry, working as doormen, targeted her after seeing she was intoxicated. They bought her more drinks, then offered to take her and a friend home around 4am. After dropping off the friend, instead of taking the victim home, they drove her to a flat in Birmingham and raped her. Both men denied the allegations, but after a three-year investigation by the Public Protection Unit, DNA evidence linked Bockerie to the crime. He was found guilty following a trial.

Harjinder Singh

Harjinder Singh, a 44-year-old West Midlands lettings agent and property developer of Stonnall Road, Aldridge, fraudulently obtained two separate Covid support loans. He had already claimed a legitimate £20,000 Bounce Back Loan for HP Property (International) Ltd in May 2020 when he applied for more the following month. He lied to a second bank, falsely declaring it was his first application, and secured a £30,000 Bounce Back Loan he was not entitled to. He then failed to declare the £30,000 loan when applying for a £95,000 Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan later that year. HP Property (International) Ltd was set up in January 2016 and traded as a residential property developer and letting agent before going into liquidation.
Also disqualified as a company director for seven years, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, and 20 days of rehabilitation activities. Pleaded guilty; admitted not reading terms and conditions.
Flamur Daka

Flamur Daka and Pranvera Smith established the charity Freedom to Stay in Birmingham in 2014, claiming to help Albanian asylum seekers. In reality, they exploited vulnerable migrants, charging upwards of £1,000 for supposed charity services, and trafficked people from Albania in trucks. Migrants who sought help were forced to work in car washes and cannabis farms. The pair admitted to immigration and drugs charges, and fraud over a £10,000 National Lottery Community Fund grant. Daka was sentenced to four years in jail.

Matthew Davies, 30, of Maple Avenue, partner of Sarah Martin, perverted the course of justice in the investigation into Andrew Heath's manslaughter.
