Tevin McLeod raped and sexually assaulted a child under 13 between 2015 and 2016. He sent messages to the girl acknowledging the abuse in a bid to stop her reporting it, expressing concerns about his reputation and career as a pilot. He was arrested after landing a flight at Manchester Airport on September 7, charged the next day.

William McDonalgh, 34, accidentally knocked over a candle in his Islington Row flat in the early hours of January 14 last year. The overturned candle ignited a fierce fire, but instead of alerting anyone, McDonalgh fled the scene. He returned about 10 minutes later and saw the flames. He tried to go back inside but was overcome by thick smoke and had to retreat. Several tenants suffered smoke inhalation and required hospital treatment. Many are still dealing with the lasting trauma caused by the fire. The blaze caused an estimated £500,000 worth of damage to the building.

Pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court. Detective Constable Sonia Bahia said: 'This fire could easily have resulted in a loss of life and has traumatised the victims involved. It is only proper that the man who caused it and chose not to alert his flat mates has now been jailed for a number of years.'

Allan Richards, a former West Midlands Police officer and scout leader from Tile Cross, committed dozens of sex offences against 17 boys aged 8 to 19 between 1976 and 2014. He exploited his positions to indecently assault boys during scouting trips, at swimming pools, in his home, local parks, and even at Steelhouse Lane police station. Offences escalated to serious sexual assaults and rapes, including raping boys aged around 15 after grooming them under pretexts of police investigations. Diaries found at his Thaxted Road home detailed the abuse.

Convicted after two trials of 40 charges including assaults, voyeurism and five counts of misconduct in public office. Must serve at least 12 years before parole eligibility and remain on licence for the remainder plus five years.

The next day, police found him hiding under his girlfriend's bed in Kestral Avenue, Yardley, after linking him to a stolen Kia Sportage from another nearby home. Evidence included a photo of him with the stolen car, a matching body warmer from CCTV, a baseball bat, screwdriver, and stolen property in the car. The victim required hospital treatment due to stress and anxiety.

He tricked them into sending naked or partially clothed images, then blackmailed them via WhatsApp, threatening exposure unless they sent more extreme material including self-harm, abusing children, and siblings. He categorised and sold the abuse material online, earning over £25,000. Offences committed between 1 January 2017 and 7 August 2020, affecting at least 196 victims in the UK and nearly 2,000 worldwide.

Admitted 158 charges including multiple counts of blackmail, disclosing private sexual films and photographs to cause distress, making and distributing indecent images of children, encouraging the sexual assault of children, sexually assaulting a boy, causing or inciting children to engage in sexual activity, fraud, and possessing more than 65,000 indecent images of children.

Alan Read, aged 62 from Colesbourne Road in Sheldon, committed historic sex offences against three victims (two boys and a girl) aged between three and 14 between 1987 and 2000. He abused the children while they were in his care and threatened them into silence, claiming they would not be believed. The offences came to light when the oldest victim reported the abuse, leading to a complex investigation and the other victims coming forward. He was arrested in May 2015.

Found guilty by unanimous jury verdict after eight-day trial on 15 counts. Placed on Sex Offender Register indefinitely.

Akhtar Zamir was part of a high-end vehicle theft ring that stole four luxury Audis worth almost £200,000 over five days in late September and early October 2013 from locations in Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull and Willenhall. The group used a key-copying device to extract security data from on-board computers and program it onto blank keys. Stolen vehicles included two Audi RS5s, an A5 and an A4. The cars were stripped at a chop shop in an industrial unit owned by accomplice Nakash Javaid.

He was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court.

He instructed lawyers, approved accounts, authorised agreements, managed staff, received over £80,000 in consultancy fees for Diamond Pharma, which accrued £445,000 in tax debts. For BHJ Consulting Ltd, he handled key decisions despite his wife being the official director.

Breached 13-year director disqualification from 2014 by controlling Diamond Pharma Limited and BHJ Consulting Ltd until 2019. Aided by wife Louise Jogia.

Bilal Bashir, aged 27 from Alum Rock, Birmingham, absconded from HMP Hewell at the end of March 2016. On April 1, 2016, he participated in a burglary in Dorridge stealing a black Audi S5 and other valuables. Three days later, masked men used the Audi to carjack a Ferrari California from a homeowner in Dorridge, dragging him out of the vehicle. The Ferrari was later found damaged (£40,000) with dashboard ripped out. The Audi driver rammed police on the M6 and attempted to evade capture. Forensic evidence including DNA from an orange glove, mobile phone data, CCTV, and witness descriptions linked Bashir to the offences.

Guilty verdict after a five-day trial. Previously serving four years for burglary, absconded from HMP Hewell.

Charlton George Ripley Floate hacked into the Home Office and FBI websites using distributed denial of service attacks, making the Home Office site unavailable for almost an hour and a half. He used the online alias ThisIsGame0ver and planned attacks with others in chat rooms. He also possessed software to control others' computers, recorded a man performing a sex act without his knowledge via webcam, and posted the video to YouTube to humiliate him. Additionally, he possessed 111 prohibited images of children. Arrested on September 12, 2014, following investigation by West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit’s Cyber Crime team.

Pleaded guilty to distributed denial of service attacks and admitted two counts of possessing 111 prohibited images of children. Convicted of conspiracy to commit an offence contrary to section 3 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990, unauthorised act with intent to impair the operation of a computer, and unauthorised access to computer material.

On July 8, Catalina Stanciu, 37-year-old mother-of-six of Sabell Road, Smethwick, and two female accomplices distracted an elderly man outside his residence in Handsworth with a deceptive plea for vegetables. While Stanciu engaged him, a third woman entered the property and stole £4,000 belonging to the victim’s daughter, £11,000 in cash from various rooms, and jewellery worth £10,000, totalling approximately £25,000. Victim noted for his sheer kindness. No items recovered.

Pivotal role in distraction burglary. Already under a community order for theft at the time. Defence cited acute grief and family bereavement but court unmoved. Marked for automatic deportation upon conclusion of sentence.

Chad Henderson, a 46-year-old US national, stabbed security guard Nathan Burton four times in the chest after barricading himself in his flat in Moseley, Birmingham in April 2021 due to rent arrears. Burton, a 27-year-old father-of-one from Wolverhampton, had attended with colleagues and a locksmith to evict him. Henderson was convicted of murder at Birmingham Crown Court in September 2023.

Convicted by majority 11-1 verdict after denying murder and claiming self-defence. Judge noted preparations to resist eviction by barricading and readiness for violent confrontation.

Craig Wright, aged 29, from Liverpool, split time between Widnes and Worcestershire. Led organised crime group dealing Class A drugs (crack cocaine and heroin) and others in Worcester since 2007. Controlled operations from prison using illegal phones, threatening violence including slashing faces, bullets, burning houses, targeting families. Used vulnerable users and juveniles as front men. Arrested March 2013 after year-long covert operation.

Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply crack cocaine and heroin as well as money laundering on 7 June 2013. Original sentence of 13 years reduced by a third due to guilty plea. Ringleader who used threats of violence and intimidation, even from prison using illegal mobile phones.

Cyrus Bassiri

Failing to take general fire precautions *

Cyrus Bassiri owned a four-storey property in Edgbaston with serious fire safety breaches including two non-working fire alarms, an escape route blocked by a washing machine and display cabinet, incorrectly fitted emergency lighting, and a damaged fire door. Problems were identified at Hagley Road premises in 2010 and new breaches after a March 2013 complaint. He failed to act on improvement demands over six months, conditions deteriorated, and he responded aggressively and with bullying behaviour to firefighters' concerns.

The 59-year-old had previously admitted three charges of failing to take general fire precautions and two of failing to comply with an enforcement notice. Described as a 'greedy and cynical' landlord who put 'profit before the safety of tenants' by Judge Mary Stacey. Had a prior six-month suspended sentence for fire safety breaches in 2012.
