The men had been hired to force a man to pay an alleged £20,000 drugs debt. The mother had received prior threats of rape, arson, and acid attack. Bates and his co-defendant Kieron Robinson, both masked, approached the house with another unidentified man. One firearm failed to discharge; the other fired through the window. Afterwards they burned their clothes. Bates had a criminal history including aggravated burglary and violent disorder.

After the woman ended up on the floor and Day threw a coat over her face, a man from the pub intervened. Day grabbed the man's shirt, struck his head, causing him to fall to the ground, then kicked him and punched him twice more in the head. The victim suffered concussion, facial grazes and an injured foot.
Pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. On licence at the time. Had 73 previous convictions for 198 offences. A five-year restraining order was also imposed.
Abdel Nane

Abdel Nane, a carer at a Middlesbrough care home, was caught on CCTV in October 2025 forcefully pushing, finger-pointing at, and rough-handling a female resident with complex mental and physical health needs. He pushed her by the legs or thighs, causing distress and bruising. Staff became suspicious after noticing bruising and reviewed the footage. Nane was 'horrified' by his own actions and pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and ill-treatment of a person while working as a carer.
Pleaded guilty. Of previous good character. Lost employment and barred from care work. Judge described offence as 'entirely out of character' and noted Nane may have had personal pressures but took frustrations out on victim.
Liam Kenny

On 10 May 2025 in Hartlepool, County Durham, Liam Kenny, 19, after consuming six pints of lager and cocaine, rode a motorbike without the owner's consent and without a licence or insurance. He was speeding in a 20mph zone on Northgate when he struck pedestrian Ryan Cameron, 22, who was waiting to cross the road. Cameron was thrown into the air and airlifted to hospital with life-changing injuries including a significant brain injury. Kenny fled on foot but was later arrested; a breath test showed 100mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath (limit 35mcg) and toxicology found he was almost four-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit and 12 times the drug limit.
Also banned from driving for 51 months. Rode motorbike without licence or insurance, over four times the drink-drive limit and 12 times the drug limit, fled the scene on foot.

Stephen Chrystal indecently assaulted three young boys in the 1990s, when the victims were aged between seven and ten. The offences occurred before September 1990, when he was 17 years old. He was convicted of 20 counts of indecent assault after a trial at Durham Crown Court. Sentencing took place at Teesside Crown Court, where the judge applied historic guidelines that capped the sentence for an under-18 at 12 months. Chrystal had since moved away, become a company director and mayor, and fostered children, but the judge deemed the offences so serious that only immediate imprisonment could be imposed.
Convicted of 20 counts of indecent assault against three boys aged 7-10 in the 1990s. He was 17 at the time of the offences. Pleaded not guilty, forcing victims to testify. Defence argued for a suspended sentence, but the judge imposed immediate custody. Also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Further cocaine was found at the station. Kgothatso Ntuli, 29, of Middlesbrough, manipulated and exploited the trust of a vulnerable woman, raping her on six occasions. The offences have left the victim with ongoing psychological and emotional issues, including worry and health anxiety affecting her social development. Ntuli appeared via link from HMP Holme House and was sentenced following a trial.
Found guilty after trial of six counts of rape. Recorder Taryn Turner noted significant risk of further offences. Will be on sex offenders' register indefinitely; restraining order imposed until further order. Offences committed considerable time ago during isolated period; previous good character.
John Paul Rowe

John Paul Rowe, sole director of Sethcodoorstore Ltd, an online retailer selling doors and furniture, took more than £16,000 from over 20 customers across the UK between May 2022 and June 2023. Customers paid in full in advance but goods were never delivered; they received false or misleading information about delivery and refunds. Funds were retained and used for other business and personal expenditure. Some customers pursued chargebacks or County Court action. Rowe continued accepting payments despite Trading Standards interventions.
Pleaded guilty on 26 January 2026 to fraudulent trading between May 2022 and June 2023. Total gain £16,175 from over 20 customers.
Leighton Watson

On 11 July 2025, Leighton Watson, aged 19, drove a Honda erratically through Billingham, reaching 70mph in a 30mph zone, mounting pavements, driving through a bush and across a field before crashing into a bollard. He attempted to flee on foot and was found hiding in a garden. Class C drugs were found on him. A prohibited firearm was later seized from a garden in December 2025 with Watson’s DNA on it.

Shane Meir

Shane Meir, 21, entered an address in Cheshire Road, in Norton, on October 3 last year. He demanded car keys while brandishing a makeshift shank and then used a razor blade to slash his 19-year-old victim's hand. The victim required surgery and physiotherapy. Meir then ran out of the house and into a neighbour's front garden where he realised he had grabbed house keys, rather than car keys. He lunged towards the victim with a knife, which forced the teen to retreat back into the house.
Found guilty of section 20 grievous bodily harm but not guilty of aggravated burglary. Must complete nine months of drug rehabilitation and 240 hours of unpaid work. Five-year restraining order made.

Joseph Foster, a 38-year-old car valeter from Tame Bridge in Stokesley, got into a row with an innocent stranger waiting at a taxi rank on Albert Road, Middlesbrough, on February 22 after drinking heavily that day. He broke free from a friend restraining him and punched the victim with force, knocking him unconscious to the ground. The victim, out with his family, suffered a broken jaw, injuries around his eyes and nose, required surgery, lost his mobile phone, and stated he no longer wants to socialise around alcohol.
Pleaded guilty. Father of four and sole earner. Binge drinks at weekends but sought help in prison. Judge Richard Bennett noted senseless, mindless violence, remorse expressed, and family reliance. Positive employer reference; job held open.
Aaron Drummond

Aaron Drummond, 27, of no fixed address, fled from police in a stolen BMW reported stolen in Haughton, Darlington on January 29, reaching 59mph in a 30mph zone and driving the wrong way down the A66 towards Sadberge, narrowly avoiding pedestrians, oncoming traffic, two HGVs and several other vehicles before abandoning the car. On February 14, he drove a Mitsubishi Outlander the wrong way down the A1(M) with lights off before crashing into another vehicle. He escaped lawful custody from hospital and damaged a pair of handcuffs.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, escaping lawful custody, and criminal damage to handcuffs. Described as a prolific offender.

Nicola Robson and her brother Michael burgled a home in Middlesbrough on February 8, 2025, while the victim was at work. They stole a laptop, PlayStation 5, gaming headset and controllers, and £1,750 in cash which the victim had saved for his mother's funeral. The items held sentimental value as bought by his mother. A hat and blanket were left behind. Stolen items recovered from Cash Converters traced back to Robson. The cash was never recovered. Victim impacted with sleep issues.
Sentenced for burglary and two counts of failing to surrender. Has 16 previous convictions for 31 offences, including theft and robbery. Defence noted drug issues but now off drugs after remand; recent death of another brother.
Lee Davidson

Macaully Beck

In June 2021, police inspected a BMW parked in Stanhope Gardens, Middlesbrough, and recovered mobile phones linked to Beck via text messages referencing 'Mac' and 'Macaully'. He was arrested the next day and searched, revealing 15 packages of heroin and crack-cocaine hidden between his buttocks, along with a small amount of cannabis. Released under investigation, he was arrested again two months later as a passenger on a moped involved in a police chase with a helicopter. During the pursuit, he threw a package containing wraps of heroin to the pavement.
Pleaded guilty to all charges. First conviction for dealing. Wrote an impressive letter to the court, which led to a reduced sentence. Involved in street level dealing for gain.
Mark Coupland

Mark Coupland, aged 16 at the time, sexually abused an eight-year-old boy in the past, involving offences of gross indecency and indecent assault of a child under 14. He used bullying threats to silence the victim for over 40 years, causing extreme psychological harm, turning the victim into a lifelong recluse and suicidal individual petrified of strangers. The abuse shattered the victim's life, with many triggers reminding him of the events.

The offences were historic indecent assaults reported recently by one victim, leading two others to come forward. The abuse caused long-term anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts for the victims, who described him as a 'monster', 'cruel, evil and sadistic', and a 'coward'.

In the early hours of December 11, 2022, at a McDonald's in Middlesbrough, Macauley Breeze, then 21, impulsively joined friends in attacking a security worker after his friend Dean Smith was escorted out. CCTV showed Breeze following with takeaway food. Outside the restaurant, the security staff member was kicked and stamped on while on the floor. Breeze kicked once to the lower part of the victim's body. The incident had a deep impact on the victim, who was just doing his job.
Pleaded guilty on the day of trial in February 2026. Delays from offence to charge and late guilty plea. Recorder Kama Melly KC noted loss of good character and involvement in street violence. Must pay £500 compensation and £700 court costs.
Peter Sowerby

Luckvindar Singh, 41, used social media sites to contact a profile he believed belonged to a 12-year-old girl and began grooming her before turning the conversations sexual. He repeatedly messaged the account, paid compliments and escalated to sending intimate videos of himself. In February 2025, Cleveland Police arrested him at his home and seized electronic devices. Digital forensics found the video sent to the victim along with four further videos classed as extreme pornography. He was charged with two counts of causing a child to watch or look at an image of sexual activity, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity, and possession of an extreme pornographic image.
Pleaded guilty to all offences. Will be on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Paul Parsons

Paul Parsons, 39, of Dalkeith Road in Hartlepool, launched a violent attack on his girlfriend in October 2025 after they had been out for the evening. Having taken cocaine, he slapped her with full force across her face accusing her of cheating, then exploded with anger and threw her across the kitchen. He left but took her house and car keys. When she locked him out using the spare key, he returned, called her abusive names, and forced his way inside through a window. He punched her all over her body and face, knocking her to the floor, and threatened to stab her barking dog. Later, while waiting for his cousin, he punched her again. When his cousin arrived and threatened to call police, he smashed a window. Police found him claiming it was 'play fighting'. The victim suffered bruising all over her body and a cut lip. During the relationship, Parsons was obsessively controlling, demanding her phone code, checking messages and photos, zooming in on innocuous images to accuse her of cheating, and verbally abusing her.
Pleaded guilty to coercive control and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Additional incidents included refusing to leave her house while drunk in 2024, assaulting an officer during arrest by bending back their finger, and threatening to burn her house down with her inside.

During raids on her Guisborough home on October 19, 2020, and a year later, police found a bullet-proof vest, fake handguns, drugs in pillows, Rolex watches, a machete, nine mobile phones, and £10,740 in cash. Receipts showed purchases of luxury items like AirPods, laptops, and gaming equipment. Heroin, cocaine, and bulking agents were found in vehicles registered in family names but driven by her. She claimed housing benefits and tax credits while funding luxury cars, holidays, and watches with the proceeds.
Found guilty after trial of concealing criminal property. Sentence reduced due to impact on her four children. Judge noted she supported her partner Aaron Thirlwall despite his criminal activities and exposed her children to serious crime.

The driver sustained injuries to his head and jaw and was left terrified, fearing for his life and refusing to pick up intoxicated passengers afterwards.

Faisal Baruud, a 31-year-old pub doorman, targeted and groomed an underage teenage girl by flattering her, spending money on her including buying alcohol and takeaway food, and plying her with drink and drugs including benzodiazepine, cocaine, and cannabis over the day before the assault. On the evening of the incident, he bought drugs in Stockton and Middlesbrough, was spotted at the Exelby garage on the A19 southbound at midnight, then took the heavily intoxicated and disorientated girl out in his Range Rover Evoque. Police stopped the vehicle in the early hours in Stockton, finding the victim unable to identify who she was with or how she got there. Forensic tests confirmed Baruud's DNA on her clothing. He kissed and initiated sexual contact with her while she was intoxicated, claiming he believed she was 17. The victim suffers flashbacks and nightmares.
Admitted sexual assault hours before trial. Will sign the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years. Restraining order imposed to prevent contact with victim. Judge Taryn Turner presided.

Callum Wray, 25, from Annan Road in Billingham, used AI to 'undress' a photo of his victim taken years earlier when she was posing in her school uniform, which he obtained from her social media account. He then pretended to be the woman on a social networking app and posted the naked image online. This incident followed previous offenses where he superimposed naked photographs of the younger woman into sexual positions and used them to set up fake profiles on social networking sites. He was caught after uploading the indecent images online last year. Police found 19 indecent images of children (ages 2-10) on his iPhone, including one showing a girl with ankles bound by handcuffs. He breached his prior sexual harm prevention order by deleting apps, internet history, emails, and chats from TikTok and X. Wray admitted being 'obsessed' with the victim, who stated she fears for her life. He has a history of childhood abuse leading to psychological issues including depression and PTSD.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching sex offender court orders and a restraining order by mentioning his victim online; three counts of making indecent images of children and to distributing an indecent image. Previously received a suspended sentence for similar crimes. Handed a new indefinite sexual harm prevention order. Victim expressed frustration over no prison sentence previously.
Leighton Finn-Gibbs

Leighton Finn-Gibbs, 20, of Selkirk Close in Saltersgill, Middlesbrough, restarted his crack cocaine business the day after his release from a Young Offenders' Institution on December 22, following a 30-month sentence for supplying class A drugs and dangerous driving. He messaged customers that he had 're-stocked' his cocaine supply and set up a call forwarding system on his phone. He offered one customer a job selling drugs, allowing them to keep 50% of profits. By December 30, police searched a house on Wellesley Road, finding 20 plastic sealed bags of cocaine (0.1 gram deals), £3,200 worth of crack cocaine in total, and kitchen scales. Finn-Gibbs was present in the house. He initially denied the offence but later pleaded guilty on the basis of working to pay off a drugs debt without receiving pay.
Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply crack cocaine. Sentence reduced due to difficult circumstances of release at age 19.
