On November 9, 2024, Mark Lindhurst Owen, of Windswept Valley View Estate, Lanner, Redruth, killed his pet chihuahua Spencer by delivering a severe blow to the head while under the influence of alcohol. He initially claimed the dog died from falling down three steps but later admitted to beating the dog, claiming it had bitten him, though no bite injury was found. Friends who visited became suspicious, reported to police, and Spencer's body was seized. Veterinary examination revealed a crushed skull, blood from mouth and ears, fractured neck, and injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, not a fall. The post-mortem confirmed Spencer was rendered instantly insensate but the act breached welfare duties.
Pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence. Remorseful and described as a momentary lapse. Cannot appeal disqualification for seven years.
