In October 2025, Michael Fenwick supplied the Security Industry Authority with a fraudulent employment reference during his application for an SIA licence. The reference purported to be from his supervisor at a former workplace. SIA staff contacted the supervisor, who confirmed he had not provided any reference. Under caution at Scarborough Police Station, Fenwick admitted forging the reference to obtain a licence without a legitimate employment reference. On 1 May 2026 at Scarborough Magistrates' Court, he pleaded guilty to using a false instrument under Section 3 of the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.
Pleaded guilty. Also ordered to pay a £90 victim surcharge and £600 prosecution costs, totalling £920.

Killing a Buzzard *

On 30 March 2024, a covertly deployed RSPB camera caught gamekeeper Thomas Munday brutally beating a protected Buzzard to death inside a crow cage trap set in woodland near Hovingham, North Yorkshire. The footage shows a Buzzard entering the trap. Four hours later, a masked and hooded individual arrives at the trap in an all-terrain vehicle. He enters the trap and repeatedly strikes the Buzzard with a stick. The injured Buzzard is then removed from the trap, still alive, and beaten several more times before being thrown into the vehicle. North Yorkshire Police identified Munday from the footage. A police search seized the stick, which had traces of Buzzard DNA confirmed by forensic testing.
Pleaded guilty to killing a Buzzard. No prior criminal record. Lost firearms/shotgun certificates and job as gamekeeper.

Sahil Nagpal caused the death of Paul Brand on October 8, 2023, on the A171 between Whitby and Teesside by a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre near Scaling Reservoir, crashing head-on into Paul's vehicle; Paul died despite treatment, and Nagpal's family members were seriously injured.

Samuel Clark, aged 38, a registered sex offender since 2012, went 'off grid' in North Yorkshire for nearly a year, failing to notify police of his address and breaching his sexual harm prevention order by possessing undeclared internet devices. These devices contained over 35,000 indecent images of children, including 4,440 pictures and 200 videos in the most serious category, and a 170-page paedophile manual offering advice on grooming and sexually exploiting children. He provided a false address to police and was found living at another property without permission. He pleaded guilty to the charges. He had previously been sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court in 2012 for similar offences. Judge Simon Hickey at Scarborough Magistrates' Court sentenced him to 42 months (3 years 6 months) imprisonment, describing him as a dangerous offender with a clear sexual interest in children.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to notify police of his address, two breaches of a sexual harm prevention order, three charges of possessing indecent images of children, and one count of possessing a paedophile manual. Judge Simon Hickey described him as dangerous, with a clear sexual interest in children, and warned he could exploit children in the future. Clark will remain on the sex offenders' register and under the SHPO for life.

On 8 June, Graham Coggins climbed onto the rooftop of a property in Alma Square, Scarborough, and moved across rooftops, climbed onto a chimney and shouted, causing a police cordon and road closures. The incident stemmed from a dispute over a dog. He eventually climbed down of his own accord and was arrested.
Pleaded guilty to causing public nuisance. The incident followed a dispute over the ownership of a dog.

Mark Miller, a 41-year-old resident of Heather Road in Ripon, North Yorkshire, appeared before Scarborough Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child. The offence involved prohibited online interactions with an individual he believed to be a child. In addition to the suspended sentence, he must complete 80 hours of unpaid work and 15 days of rehabilitative activities, and was placed on the sex offenders’ register and given a sexual harm prevention order, both for seven years.
