He arrived on a bicycle, talked to the group, and passed over suspected drugs in exchange for money. Police followed him, stopped and searched him, finding a bag of cannabis valued at £15 and £94 cash. A strip search at Clough Road police station revealed four wraps of heroin valued at £50 and six wraps of crack cocaine valued at £130 hidden between his buttocks. He refused to provide the security code for his mobile phone and claimed ignorance of the drugs and cash during interview.

He had been in the UK since November 2019 as a rejected asylum seeker from Iran and faces likely deportation.

On August 22, 2025, he became involved in a violent affray in South Back Lane after hearing a commotion; his nephew was slashed in the face, and O'Connell disarmed the attacker of a knife but chased him briefly before handing the knife to a bystander who hid it in a garden. He claimed he intervened to protect his nephew.

They wore motorcycle helmets to conceal identities. Start sat on the bike while the other waited nearby. The owner intervened, leading to a struggle where the accomplice threatened to stab him. They failed to start the bike and fled, causing scratches to the vehicle. Start was identified via fingerprints and arrested. On July 4, 2025, while on bail, Start was found carrying a large hunting knife in a sheath in his waistband, among a group of balaclava-wearing youths acting suspiciously. He made no comment in interviews. The motorcycle owner was traumatized, sold the bike, and feared further attempts.

Thomas Finlay, 56, of Gleneagles Park, east Hull, owned a brown mixed-breed dog that was dangerously out of control. On February 11, 2025, while Finlay was drunk and under the influence of cannabis, lying face down on Holderness Road with a bottle of whisky, the dog bit a woman's hand (1cm cut) after she tried to help him. On April 11, 2025, in Dunvegan Road, the unmuzzled and unleashed dog bit another woman's wrist, causing bite marks on both sides and ripping her cardigan; she required antibiotics and suffered a loss of confidence. Finlay took no action after the first incident to control the dog. The dog was seized by police and euthanised on a vet's recommendation before sentencing.
