Reading Magistrates' Court Sentencing Results

O'Shea Gordon-Lucas was riding a Sur-Ron Light Bee electric motorbike at about 18:00 GMT on 3 November 2025 in Elgar Road, Reading, when he crashed into a woman in her 50s. She was left with PTSD, bleeding on the brain, and fractures to her skull, right eye socket and right wrist.

Ryan Solly admitted multiple shoplifting offences involving hundreds of pounds committed at stores in Newbury, Tilehurst and Reading earlier in 2026. He further admitted assaulting a man by beating him in Newbury on August 18. He was sentenced at Reading Magistrates' Court.

William Hutchins had been drinking in The Blue Ball pub in Kintbury. When he left around 10.30pm he punched a window, shattering it, and splintered glass entered the victim's eye. The victim suffered a cut cornea and required reconstruction of the eyeball; doctors said the damage could have been irreversible without prompt treatment. The offence took place on 4 April 2025. By the time of sentencing the victim's eyesight was no longer in danger.

Robert Black admitted causing £50 worth of damage to CCTV wiring in Newbury on 22 April 2024. He further admitted having a hammer intending to damage property in Newbury on 15 April 2025, and causing harassment, alarm or distress to the victim on the same occasion. He also pleaded guilty to several offences of shoplifting.

Shaun Joyce drove a Mercedes A Class on Bath Road in Reading on March 27 after drinking more than twice the legal limit. Tests showed 84mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, against a legal limit of 35mcg. He initially denied the offence but later changed his plea to guilty.

James Warwick pursued a course of conduct which amounted to harassment of a woman between 7 and 10 November 2025 by calling her around 100 times and leaving numerous voicemails.

Roy Mace stole five bottles of vodka, together worth £120, from Sainsbury's in Newbury on March 24. He was described as a prolific shoplifter and appeared at Reading Magistrates' Court.

On 8 November 2025, Matthew Minter drove a Ford Puma on Basingstoke Road, Reading, after drinking more than the legal limit. A blood test recorded 104mg of alcohol per 100ml, exceeding the 80mg legal limit. He also drove without insurance and without a valid licence.

Derek McAllan was caught driving a Porsche Cayenne on the A329M in Reading on 27 April after drinking more than the legal limit. A breath test showed 104mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, with the legal limit at 35mcg. He admitted the offence and appeared at Reading Magistrates Court on 16 June 2026.

On June 19, 2025, Jawad Nadeem locked his German Shepherd dog in the boot of his car during a heatwave with temperatures of 32°C in Slough. Police found the dog distressed, dehydrated, and overheating; it also had an untreated degenerative leg condition. The next day, neighbours reported that Nadeem had placed another German Shepherd in a small wire crate in direct sunlight in a garden. He refused to cooperate with investigators, gave a 'no comment' interview, and did not disclose the location of the second dog. Nadeem was charged with causing unnecessary suffering and failing in his duty of care under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Scott Barrett was caught riding a Yamaha Fazer in Lower Basildon on May 2, 2025, while disqualified from holding a licence. He also failed to supply a blood sample during an investigation into whether he had committed a further offence, drove without insurance, and later failed to give information relating to the identity of a rider at Newbury police station on June 5, 2025.

George Bailey crashed into a parked car in Hungerford High Street on Friday, January 30, after drinking nearly two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit. The owner of the parked vehicle heard the collision and called police. Bailey waited for officers and failed a roadside breath test. He told magistrates he had been drinking in town and had made a stupid decision to drive home because his windscreen had been broken. He apologised for his lack of judgement.

Roy Funderburk was found in possession of a quantity of cannabis in Thatcham on May 11, 2025. On the same occasion, during an interaction with police, he used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that was racially aggravated, causing two officers harassment, alarm or distress. He admitted the offences and received fines and financial penalties, with magistrates increasing the compensation to reflect the racist element of the offence.

Paul Nash was caught driving an Audi A4 in Thatcham on 24 August 2025 with excess alcohol in his system. Tests showed 84mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, above the legal limit of 80mg. He admitted the offence at Reading Magistrates' Court and was fined £333, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £133 victim services surcharge, and banned from driving for 12 months.

Between 18 October and 1 November 2025, Andrew Gainey stole goods valued at £1,227.44 from multiple Newbury shops, including Boots, TK Maxx, Matalan, Savers and Marks & Spencer. He was arrested and charged on 6 November 2025 and convicted the following day at Reading Magistrates' Court.

Steven McDonald admitted driving a Tesla Model Y on the A4 Bath Road in the Reading area on October 15 after drinking more than the legal limit. A breath test showed 64mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, almost twice the legal limit of 35mcg. The court heard he had no previous convictions. His defence said he was an ultramarathon runner who did not normally drink alcohol and had been fasting before consuming a small amount of alcohol, resulting in a high reading. The inevitable driving ban was said to have significant consequences for his employment and family.

Brendan Banham, 22, of Briff Lane, Hermitage, was involved in a hit and run incident in Reading, where he drove dangerously without the proper qualifications or insurance, leading to his arrest and sentencing.

Michael Butler, 36, of no fixed abode, committed multiple thefts from supermarkets in Reading and assaulted someone during these incidents.

Roger Budd, 60, of 22 Hythe Park Road, Egham, Surrey, engaged in racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm, or distress on Peascod Street, Windsor, on April 18, 2024.

Valentin Buftea, 46, of no fixed abode in Slough, failed to provide a specimen for analysis on October 10, 2024, in Maidenhead.

Stalked and assaulted a woman between March 1 and April 8, sending messages and turning up at her property, and assaulted her between January 1 and 3.

Martin Gunn, 52, met the victim online in March 2023 and began stalking her after their brief relationship ended in May 2023. He moved near her home, frequently appeared near her child's school, purchased a similar vehicle and pet, and applied to the same gym. The stalking involved communication attempts and occurred between August 2023 and February 14, 2024, in Windsor, causing fear of violence.

In March last year, a 15-year-old volunteer, accompanied by PPP officers, visited the Spar store at 6 Crown Row, Bracknell, selected a single can of Smirnoff Vodka and Cranberry, and took it to the till. The sales assistant did not request ID, ask the age, or make any attempt to verify.

Christian Godwin, of Newport Close, Newbury, posed as a Gas Safe engineer when he was not registered. He carried out gas and plumbing work, including boiler installations, on five victims who each paid about £2,000 to £4,000. The work created a real and foreseeable risk of serious injury or death from gas leaks, fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Victims' impacts included: one household without heating over Christmas after a dangerous boiler installation; another couple suffering nausea, dizziness and headaches with gas supply disconnected; a third receiving an electric shock, water damage and a large hole in the ceiling from a leaking hot water tank. He operated under names including Premier Mechanical Solutions and Premier Heat and Cool Limited.

In November 2025, Andrew Lovelock, then homeless in Newbury, propositioned schoolchildren near a town centre park and performed a sex act in front of a woman walking her dog in Victoria Park. Two charges of sexual communication with a child were not proceeded with. He was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months.
