Colin Richards, an armed robber, shot and killed PC Brian Bishop in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, on 22 August 1984. Bishop, a police officer, was shot in the head while challenging Richards, who had hidden stolen money from post office raids. Bishop died five days later in hospital. Richards also shot and wounded Sergeant Mervyn Fairweather. He was arrested at the scene after another officer returned fire.

She managed to escape the vehicle, but Bassett continued his assault before driving off in her vehicle with their baby in the back. Hamza Ali, 39, from Chilford Road, Waltham Forest, was convicted alongside two other men at Norwich Crown Court for abducting a 13-year-old girl and subjecting her to sexual abuse in Ipswich. In early 2013, the group persuaded the girl, described as naive and from a troubled family, to enter their van in east London. They transported her to a house in Chevallier Street, Ipswich, where over four days they took turns abusing her, treating her 'like a piece of meat'. Ali was convicted of sexual assault and conspiracy to traffic in the UK. The girl was rescued by police. Judge Nicholas Coleman highlighted her lack of refuge and the men's intent to exploit her sexually, leaving her traumatised.
Mitigation argued the victim appeared older than her age. Judge Nicholas Coleman condemned the exploitation, stating the girl was taken to a house she'd never been to, in the company of men she'd never met. Ali was also added to the sex offenders register and faces potential deportation.

He followed her, grabbed her roughly despite her protests, forced her to the floor, put his hand over her mouth, and assaulted her while she screamed for help around 20 times. She bit his hand, he fled, but was later arrested at a taxi rank after smiling and giving thumbs up to the victim. The offence occurred on July 20, 2016.

He had sexualised chats with two girls under 16 and offered to pay one's fare to meet.

He fled the UK in September 2020, was arrested in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in June 2022 with a false passport and driving licence, and extradited on July 7, 2022.

The conversations quickly became sexualised; he asked for images of her and details of her underwear. He was made well aware of her purported age.
Admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child under 16 and two counts of attempting to incite a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity. Made subject of indefinite sexual harm prevention order and required to sign sex offenders register indefinitely. Eight prior convictions for 12 offences, none sexual. Suffered head injury five years ago from being shot by friend, leading to forgetfulness; history of cannabis use. Judge noted it was sheer good fortune no actual child was harmed.

Christopher Dunham, a 39-year-old from Norwich, posed as a 20-year-old on Facebook Messenger and engaged in sexual communication with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl between March and September 2023. He complimented her, discussed sexual topics, and sent an explicit image. After a tip from paedophile hunters, police seized his electronic devices and uncovered more than 7,000 indecent images of children, including 1,399 Category A images (the most severe) with victims as young as two to four years old. Prohibited images and extreme pornographic images were also found. Additionally, officers discovered cannabis valued at over £1,500, cocaine worth over £1,800, and a small cannabis cultivation setup. He pleaded guilty to multiple sexual and drug offences.

He was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court.

Christopher Sheldrick, 56, a former police officer from Gorleston, Norfolk, communicated with a decoy pretending to be a 14-year-old girl between 24 and 30 September 2024. He sent sexually suggestive messages, requested a 'body shot', and shared a link to pornography, ignoring the decoy's stated age. He had prior child sex offence convictions from 2023, prohibiting unsupervised contact with under-16s and requiring sex offender registration. He was confronted at home by the Ghosts Online Child Protection Team on 29 September 2024, admitted being an ex-officer, and was later arrested. At Norwich Crown Court he admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and failing to comply with sex offender notification requirements.
Admitted all charges. Mitigation: he was 'so sickened' by his actions that he attempted suicide. Will remain on sex offenders register and subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years.

On May 13, 2020, while driving a Ford Focus on Victoria Road, he was stopped by police who recovered drugs, cash, and mobile phones from the vehicle, and more drugs and cash from his home address. Released under investigation, he was stopped again on June 12, 2020, on Stanley Road, Diss, where more drugs were found in the vehicle and at his home. Mobile phone data provided evidence of drug supply.

Michael Tucker, aged 50, was found guilty of murdering his 28-year-old girlfriend Rebecca Thorpe. In March 2010, at the Compasses Inn in Snettisham which the couple ran, Tucker shot Miss Thorpe. He then concealed her body in a freezer in an outbuilding behind the pub before fleeing to Sandown on the Isle of Wight, where he was eventually arrested. He denied murder and tried to claim he was guilty only of manslaughter.
Found guilty of murder following a six-day trial. The jury took just 45 minutes to convict. He had claimed manslaughter.

Rashid Al-Waeli, a 30-year-old Yemeni asylum seeker housed at the Brook Hotel in Norwich, initiated online contact with a decoy posing as a 14-year-old boy on the Sugar website between September and October 2023, falsely presenting himself as 22. The conversation moved to WhatsApp, where he persistently asked for intimate photographs and sent indecent images and videos of himself. The decoy was operated by a member of a paedophile hunter group, who reported the exchanges to police. Officers attended the hotel, seized his phone, and halted the communication. He admitted to attempting to incite a person under 18 to engage in sexual activity, attempting to cause a child to look at an image of sexual activity, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, and making indecent photographs of a child.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted child sex offences. Judge Alice Robinson noted he 'repeatedly' sought sexual images from the decoy and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offenders' register requirement, each for 10 years. Mitigation argued offending began from 'curiosity' but descended into a 'rabbit hole of inappropriate online behaviour'. Defendant is a Yemeni asylum seeker unable to confide in family due to risks in Yemen.

Reece Darton, a 26-year-old man from Spixworth, Norfolk, engaged in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl between June and September 2018. The victim's mother discovered a message on her daughter's phone saying 'hello beautiful' from an unknown number, and initially the girl claimed it was from an 18-year-old named Reece. Social media investigation revealed Darton's true age. Social services and police were informed, and officers warned Darton to cease all contact. He ignored the warning and the relationship became sexual by October 2018. Darton admitted three counts of sexual activity with a child.

Jamie Webster, a 44-year-old man from Salhouse, Norfolk, was present with a woman who suffered from a medical condition causing multiple seizures. On 12 October 2020 at a property in Norwich, during one episode where the woman lost functioning and drifted in and out of consciousness, Webster raped her. The victim awoke to find him on top of her, unable to feel her legs and not fully conscious to consent. He was arrested on 18 October 2020 after the victim confided in colleagues and friends. A search of the property uncovered a stun gun, which he was prohibited from possessing. The victim provided a statement describing the profound impact on her life.
Pleaded guilty to rape and possession of a prohibited weapon. The victim suffered from a medical condition causing seizures; Webster raped her while she was unconscious. A stun gun was found at the property.
Jennifer Smith
