Anthea Hewitt
Causing unnecessary harm to protected animals and failing to ensure animal welfare *
Sentence
10-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, banned from owning animals for 10 years, and ordered to pay £1,154 fine
Anthea Hewitt was prosecuted for housing dozens of animals, including 18 peacocks, 10 Siberian huskies, four springer spaniels, a goat, and a rabbit, in appalling conditions at her property in Rollesby. A raid in March 2024 revealed dirty and contaminated kennels, underweight dogs, exposed nails, faeces everywhere, pigeon carcasses, insufficient water, a smell of ammonia, and a rat infestation. One pregnant spaniel required an emergency caesarean, but the puppy was deceased. A husky was humanely euthanised due to aggression, and other animals lacked proper care, food, and housing.
Pleaded guilty to 20 charges, including five for causing unnecessary harm to animals. The judge noted that she was incompetent and lacked the ability to care for animals properly.
