Sentence
7 years imprisonment
On Christmas Eve, Luke Smaje, 23, of Broad Oak View, Northop Hall, stabbed martial arts fighter Jack Shaw twice in the Broad Oak pub in Connah's Quay after both had relationships with the same woman at different times. Smaje complained of lack of respect and wanted to show pain, getting the jump on Shaw with a fairly sizeable knife before they could go outside to fight. One stab went through Shaw's liver, causing him to lose two and a half litres of blood, requiring two surgeries and resulting in lasting weakness that may prevent his professional fighting career. Shaw was rushed to the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Pleaded guilty to wounding with intent. Concurrent 16 months for possession of a knife in a public place. Must serve two thirds before parole eligibility. Judge noted the attack was motivated by revenge over relationships with the same woman, out of character but involved illegal knife carrying, ketamine, and alcohol.
