He shouted aggressively at staff, made threats to kill, and frightened them with a fire extinguisher. The incident was not part of immigration protests at the hotel. Jones was refused entry, the drugs were seized, and he attended a voluntary interview. He claimed the drugs were for sharing with approximately 20 friends at the festival, but phone messages revealed he was planning to deal them.

He was found slumped over the wheel with empty gin bottles in the car, smelling strongly of alcohol and slurring his words. Witnesses described his erratic driving prior to the collision, including veering onto the opposite side of the road. Hours earlier, he had been driving dangerously on the A556 in Tabley. The driver of the Corsa, Paula Chadwick, 52, sustained serious injuries and died the next day at Royal Stoke University Hospital. Boulton claimed a mechanical fault but tests showed none.
