The man recovered after a lengthy hospital stay, but Christine Jones died from her injuries a few days later.

Michael Lymath, 43, from Southport, groomed and sexually abused several children, including a boy and five girls, via social media and online games. He paid victims with money, vouchers, or promises of payment to continue, and became bullying and threatening if they tried to stop. He met some victims in person, travelling around the country including to Cumbria and Nottinghamshire, and raped one in a transit van he owned, offering to pay for taxis. The abuse was discovered when one victim told her mother. He was questioned on 8 December 2024, and searches of his home and van revealed over 2,450 indecent images, including 13 extreme category, along with devices, clothing, and handwritten notes. He was charged with 34 counts.
Pleaded guilty to 27 counts including meeting a child following sexual grooming, paying a child for sexual services, sexual assault, possession of indecent images and rape of a child. The sentencing judge described the case as one of the most serious of its type, calling Lymath 'every parent’s nightmare' and his actions 'predatory', 'manipulative' and 'monstrous'.

The abuse occurred between 2015 and 2018, and the case emerged after a 2018 car crash involving the complainant, triggering a Greater Manchester Police investigation.

The group was arrested on 5 September 2024 when North West Regional Organised Crime Unit detectives carried out simultaneous warrants across Cheshire. Iain Barton, a 58-year-old support worker at a Merseyside home for people recovering from mental health disorders, engaged in a sexual relationship with a vulnerable younger female client he was caring for. The relationship, which the victim believed was consensual, began a couple of years before December 2022 when Barton left his job. The victim had been admitted to the home following hospital treatment for severe mental health problems. She revealed the relationship to staff in January 2023 and later discovered she was pregnant with Barton's child, after which she supported the prosecution. Barton was arrested in January 2023, answered 'No Comment' to police questions, and the offences caused significant distress to the victim, impacting her mental and physical health.
Pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder by a care worker. A Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order were also imposed.
