Pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary. Described as the ringleader.
John Rytting
Child cruelty *
Sentence
13 years' imprisonment
John Rytting and Michala Pyke encouraged four-year-old Poppy Widdison to eat sedatives including heroin, diazepam, methadone and ketamine for up to six months before her death from cardiac arrest in June 2013, due to a long period of ill-treatment and neglect.
Convicted after trial; denied giving drugs to the child.
John Sandell
Indecency with a child *
Sentence
3 years imprisonment
John Sandell, 75, was convicted of six offences of indecency with a child. The victim was a young girl. He groomed her by offering rewards, cakes, treats, taking her to Hull Fair, and showing inappropriate videos. He told her not to say anything. He was caught with the girl in a caravan at business premises in Holderness, where the mother discovered them together. The victim suffered flashbacks, horrendous depression, emotional and psychological harm, impacting her life, relationships, and ability to sleep or concentrate.
Denied six offences of indecency with a child but convicted by jury on majority verdicts of 11 to one. Cleared of two other similar offences and two of indecent assault. No previous convictions. Assessed as low risk of reoffending. Given indefinite sexual harm prevention order and must register as sex offender for life.
Joseph Toft
Sexual assault *
Sentence
18-month suspended prison sentence and 20 days' rehabilitation
On 30 July 2022, Joseph Toft, heavily intoxicated, deliberately targeted and grabbed a young girl, repeatedly touching her intimately for about a minute or two, squeezing her thigh and moving his hand up, saying 'Oh, I like that!' while smiling. The girl told him to stop, felt scared and shocked, moved away, and later reported it to her mother and police, stating it profoundly affected her confidence, trust in people, and daily life.
Denied offence but convicted by jury after trial ending 26 February. Previous convictions but none since September 1993 and no prior sexual offences. Mitigating factors included character references, recent widowerhood leading to increased drinking and memory loss, ongoing health problems, and low risk of reconviction. Judge noted deliberate sexual behaviour despite intoxication and significant impact on victim.
Josh Boynton-Eckles
Causing or inciting a girl under 16 to engage in sexual activity *
Sentence
20 months imprisonment suspended for two years
Between 2015 and 2016, while serving in the military stationed in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, Josh Boynton-Eckles, then around 20 years old, contacted underage girls aged 12 to 17 online worldwide via various apps. He sent them naked pictures of himself, images of bondage equipment, and cartoons depicting adults spanking, while encouraging them to send naked pictures, discussing sexual acts, kissing, touching, taking virginity, and meeting for sex. He exploited their vulnerabilities and doubts about appearance. He also used another woman's identity on the Whisper app to pose as her and obtain naked pictures from gay or bisexual women, exchanging her images. Police found 59 category C indecent images of children on his phone. Offending came to light after mothers of two victims reported it.
Pleaded guilty to five counts of causing or inciting a girl under 16 to engage in sexual activity, one count of fraud, one count of making an indecent photograph of a child and distributing a photograph of a child. Ordered to complete 15 days rehabilitation activity requirement, take part in the Horizon programme, registered sex offender for 10 years, and Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years. Judge noted behaviour was 'the stuff of parents nightmares' but suspended sentence by a fine margin due to no further trouble, psychological factors and no contact offences.
Jeffrey Birkett
Possessing indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornography *
Sentence
eight-month suspended prison sentence, 150 hours' unpaid work and 30 days' rehabilitation
Jeffrey Birkett, a computer support technician of The Oval, Pocklington, was found with two Category C indecent images of children, 10 extreme pornography bestiality images and 40 videos following an investigation by the National Crime Agency after intercepting extremely disturbing online messages traced to his home.
