Spinks, a crack cocaine user, had been making these experimental explosives for his eccentric interest over 15 years dating back to January 2009, possessing a recipe book and diagrams for triggers, and had a prior incident where gunpowder smoked and filled his property.
Pleaded guilty to 14 charges of making explosives and previously found guilty of throwing a corrosive fluid to injure. Judge James Carter ordered destruction of explosive items, payment of a victim surcharge, and a 15-year restraining order in relation to the acid attack victim.

The couple argued, during which Tailby grabbed Chrissie by the neck and struck her head on the floor several times. He then attempted to clean up evidence of the attack. Chrissie died in hospital from extensive head injuries sustained in the assault.
Pleaded guilty to manslaughter but plea not accepted; found guilty of murder after trial. CPS senior prosecutor Emma Hodgson commented on the inexcusable violence and intent to cause really serious harm.

He denied the offence, but following a trial at Derby Crown Court in October 2024, a jury convicted him. On 7 November 2024, Judge imposed a nine-year custodial sentence and a restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim.
