Robert Spinks
Making explosives and throwing corrosive fluid to injure *
Sentence
7 years imprisonment
Robert Spinks threw a mixture of weedkiller, water, and various acids over a victim on Derby Road, Chesterfield, in the early hours of 19 July 2024, after consuming two bottles of cider and two beers, causing chemical burns and permanent scarring to the victim's head, neck, shoulder, and chest. A subsequent police search of his flat on Kingsley Avenue, Chesterfield, in July 2024 uncovered explosive materials including explosive devices, fuses, HMTD, gunpowder, and flash powder, stored in Tupperware-style containers, leading to the evacuation of 35 homes. Spinks, a crack cocaine user, had been making these experimental explosives for his eccentric interest over 15 years dating back to January 2009, possessing a recipe book and diagrams for triggers, and had a prior incident where gunpowder smoked and filled his property.
Pleaded guilty to 14 charges of making explosives and previously found guilty of throwing a corrosive fluid to injure. Judge James Carter ordered destruction of explosive items, payment of a victim surcharge, and a 15-year restraining order in relation to the acid attack victim.
