Found guilty of eight counts of sexual assault by touching. Judge Angela Morris explained that the extra count was omitted in error and would not increase the total sentence time.
Paramjit Singh
Gross negligence manslaughter *
Sentence
3 years and 3 months imprisonment
Paramjit Singh, previously the owner and manager of SAB Builders, was overseeing the demolition of Birchdene in Chilworth. On 15 July 2019, he demolished all but one side of the garage without putting up signs or boarding to indicate the site was unsafe. On 16 July 2019, just before 9am, he returned to demolish the final wall using a digger without identifying exclusion zones or knowing the location of his team members. Kulwant Singh Athwal, a 64-year-old worker employed as an odd job man, was on the other side of the wall when it collapsed onto him, causing fatal injuries consistent with being crushed by a heavy object. Singh's public liability insurance and CSCS card had expired after his company went bankrupt in 2015.
Found guilty after a two-week trial. Also sentenced to 1 year for breaching sections 2 and 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to run concurrently.
