Sentence
Life imprisonment with minimum term of 45 years
On 15 October 2023, Ahmed Alid, a 45-year-old Moroccan national, armed himself with two knives and broke into the bedroom of his sleeping housemate in Wharton Terrace, Hartlepool, stabbing him six times in the chest, legs, and mouth while shouting 'Allahu Akbar'. The attack was motivated by the housemate's conversion to Christianity. The housemate fought off Alid and disarmed him with help from another resident. Alid then left the property, approached 70-year-old Terence Carney from behind in Hartlepool town centre, pushed him to the ground, and stabbed him six times in the chest, abdomen, and back. Carney was found by police at 5.40am and pronounced dead shortly after 6am. In interview, Alid admitted the acts for revenge over Israel's actions in Gaza, stating he would have killed more if possible, and assaulted two female detectives at the end. The prosecution proved intent to kill, with evidence of terrorist connection related to the Gaza conflict.
Found guilty of murder, attempted murder, and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. The judge ruled it was a premeditated terrorist offence. Minus 213 days spent on remand.
