Andrew Oakes
Fraud by abuse of a position of trust *
Sentence
3.5 years imprisonment
Andrew Oakes, a 39-year-old army staff sergeant, abused his position as a financial systems administrator at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire to fraudulently transfer over £330,000 from Ministry of Defence funds to his personal accounts between February 2021 and October 2024. He falsified bank statements, local authority documents, utility bills, and government cheques to support his fraud, including claiming mileage allowances, paid leave on compassionate and medical grounds, and disguising transactions. Oakes used the money to purchase three Teslas, a BMW Mini, a Nissan Qashqai, electrical goods, and adult services, and to pay off debts, while claiming the funds came from an 'army lottery' win.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud by false representation, fraud by abuse of a position of trust, and acquiring criminal property. Judge Adams noted the abuse of trust, its impact on the army's reputation and morale, and acknowledged Oakes's personal issues including a relationship breakdown and alcohol problems.
