Ben Strangeways carried out a poison pen letter campaign, sending sickening letters to at least 10 victims across the country, including threats of rape and murder of their children, with references to engaging in necrophilia and murdered toddler James Bulger. The campaign began with a Christmas card sent on December 24, and victims included a mum-of-four from Merseyside. He was arrested on January 10 at a bus station in possession of a flick knife and an 'attack kit' containing handcuffs, eye mask, ankle and wrist ties, energy tablets, and a drink. A search of his home uncovered handwritten letters, a black balaclava, a hammer, a knife, an air pistol, books about serial killers, and a 'child-like' sex doll.
Pleaded guilty to one count of stalking involving serious alarm or distress, nine counts of sending threatening communications, and one count of possession of a bladed article. The judge described it as one of the most disturbing cases and stated that Strangeways is dangerous and will remain so for the foreseeable future. He had no previous convictions.
Andrew Oakes
Fraud by abuse of a position of trust *

Andrew Oakes, a 39-year-old army staff sergeant, abused his position as a financial systems administrator at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire to fraudulently transfer over £330,000 from Ministry of Defence funds to his personal accounts between February 2021 and October 2024. He falsified bank statements, local authority documents, utility bills, and government cheques to support his fraud, including claiming mileage allowances, paid leave on compassionate and medical grounds, and disguising transactions. Oakes used the money to purchase three Teslas, a BMW Mini, a Nissan Qashqai, electrical goods, and adult services, and to pay off debts, while claiming the funds came from an 'army lottery' win.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud by false representation, fraud by abuse of a position of trust, and acquiring criminal property. Judge Adams noted the abuse of trust, its impact on the army's reputation and morale, and acknowledged Oakes's personal issues including a relationship breakdown and alcohol problems.

Benjamin Clarke became fixated on his local MP, Sam Rushworth, and made repeated threats to kill him and his family, including threats to firebomb the MP's property. These threats were made via social media and continued even while Clarke was on remand. Clarke had significant mental health problems, was a cannabis smoker, and consumed up to 1.5 litres of vodka daily. The incidents occurred in the context of his obsession, and he was arrested and charged accordingly.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of making threats to kill and a malicious communications offence. Judge deemed him a dangerous offender due to continued threats while on remand, and noted his mental health issues, cannabis use, and alcohol consumption.

Simon Vickers fatally wounded his daughter Scarlett Vickers in the kitchen of their home on Geneva Road, Darlington, in July 2024. He claimed it was a play fight where they were jokingly throwing items while cooking, and he mistakenly swiped a kitchen knife which hit her. After his partner called for an ambulance, paramedics found Scarlett on the floor with a severe stab wound to the chest. She died from her injuries shortly after.

Cameron Watson

On August 26, 2024, Cameron Watson was driving his private car on the A688 in County Durham, where he exceeded the speed limit by reaching speeds up to 117mph in a 60mph zone. He was observed weaving between lanes on the dual carriageway and driving through a roundabout junction at Clyde Terrace with little awareness or attention to other road users who might be entering.

On June 22, 2023, in Middlesbrough on Premier Road, he chased and stabbed a 15-year-old schoolgirl five times in the back and chest with steak knives he purchased, after threatening her life via voice notes. The attack was nearly fatal but interrupted by a passing motorist. Forensic evidence from his devices revealed downloads of child indecent images and communications inciting sexual activity.
Found guilty of attempted murder, child sex offences, and stalking. Pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and making indecent images of children. No previous convictions. Lee's inconsistent statements and inability to provide ID exposed his lies; the Royal Military Police confirmed he had never served. The victim described severe emotional distress, shock, and fear that the false accusation could ruin his life, studies, and career.
Must serve 40% in custody before release on licence. Has six previous convictions for nine offences. Pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. Luke Skelton, a former Gateshead College student with extreme right-wing views, engaged in a course of conduct from October 2020 to October 2021 aimed at preparing a terrorist attack to spark a race war. He conducted hostile reconnaissance by travelling over 10 miles from his home in Oxclose, Washington, to Forth Banks police station in Newcastle city centre in September 2021, where he took photos. Skelton researched methods to build explosives, including downloading materials on napalm, dynamite, and Molotov cocktails. He wrote a manifesto and final note expressing intent to accelerate a racial war and idolized fascist atrocities. Previously referred to the Prevent anti-terror programme, he was arrested in June 2021 but faced no further action at that time, after which he changed his online username to Adolf Hitler to evade suspicion. He was 18 at the time of the reconnaissance and is now 20.
Found guilty after trial. Pleaded not guilty. Mitigating factors included autism and impact of Covid pandemic. Judge noted defendant's extreme right-wing views, racism, sexism, homophobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia, but stated he lacked the capability to construct an effective explosive device.

Damien Bendall, 36, a former cage fighter already serving a whole-life sentence for the 2021 murders of his pregnant partner Terri Harris, her children Lacey (11) and John Paul (13), and Lacey's friend Connie Gent (11) in Killamarsh, Derbyshire, carried out an unprovoked hammer attack on fellow inmate Michael Mullaney at HMP Frankland, Durham, in May 2024. Bendall struck Mullaney four times in the head with a claw hammer in a workshop, the first blow rendering him unconscious, causing depressed skull fractures and bleeding on the brain. The attack was planned to engineer a move to the segregation unit due to Bendall's deteriorating mental state. Mullaney was treated for four nights in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, and reported ongoing anxiety and sleep issues.
Pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Aggravated due to occurring in prison and previous convictions for serious violent and sexual offences. Will never be released due to existing whole-life tariff.

Brad Anderson

Brad Anderson, a drug dealer from Middlesbrough, was involved in supplying heroin and cocaine. In June and July 2023, while Euan Corbett was abroad evading justice, Anderson received instructions via Snapchat voice notes to target properties of individuals owing Corbett small amounts of money, including 'pinging' houses and 'blowing out windows'. This culminated in a shotgun attack on a house in Liverton Avenue, Middlesbrough, on July 5, 2023, where shots were fired at the living room window while the homeowner was inside upstairs.
Jailed for possession with intent to supply heroin and cocaine, and conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. Acted on orders from Euan Corbett while Corbett was on the run.

Ryan Lee Rowland Smith possessed more than 4,000 images of baby and toddler sexual abuse on his mobile phone, including 13.5 hours of video, with eight hours being category A footage depicting extreme abuse. He was arrested in October 2024 after being found accessing such content. The offences involved distributing and making indecent images of children, as well as possessing prohibited materials, which caused significant harm to victims and required officers to view harrowing evidence.
Convicted of nine offences, including three counts of distributing indecent images of children, three counts of making indecent images of children, possessing a paedophile manual, and possessing extreme pornography. Police officers described the content as some of the most disturbing they had witnessed and branded him the worst offender they had dealt with. He showed no remorse and answered 'no comment' during interviews.
