Bethany Mulliner sent a series of threatening messages to her former female partner following the breakdown of their three-month relationship, which began after meeting in HMP Low Newton. The threats, sent between April and July 2025 in Meadowfield, County Durham, included statements such as 'I will happily sit in jail knowing I've killed you', 'you are going to be six feet under very soon', 'I will stab you and watch you bleed so much', and 'I am a dangerous person if you get on the wrong side of me'. The victim was left absolutely terrified and believed Mulliner would seriously injure or hurt her. Mulliner was arrested, bailed, but attempted further contact before being remanded in February 2026.

Jemal Fassir-Hussain, 35, an Eritrean national, isolated a drunk woman from her friend at Flares nightclub in Middlesbrough a number of years ago. He waited outside the toilets, shepherded them to a separate bar, lied that her friend had left, and walked her to his home on Yew Street. He attempted to rape her outside the gate, then raped her twice inside the flat while she screamed in pain and zoned in and out of consciousness. He smashed her phone when she sought help via Snapchat. The victim wandered aimlessly until helped and reunited with her friend.
Convicted of attempted rape and two counts of rape after trial. Eligible for release after serving two-thirds. Likely to be deported after sentence. Barred from working with children and vulnerable people for life. Offence not pre-planned, isolated incident. Family impact noted in mitigation.

The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) raided Matthew Smith's home on Charles Street and found more drugs, including cocaine, MDMA and ketamine, as well as what appeared to be a police-style baton.

On October 19, 2025, in Windermere Avenue, Stockton, a vigilante group gathered after Ben Rooney's brother was arrested for alleged paedophile offences. The group was making threats and using racial abuse. Mark Jenkins, 37, came out of the house with a police-style baton to confront the group, raising it at people screaming abuse. He was intoxicated and arrested within the hour by armed police. Jenkins had been at his aunt's home when the commotion started and saw the gang threatening them.
Pleaded guilty to threatening people with an offensive weapon. Judge noted he raised his baton at people who approached him and that he was clearly intoxicated. Has a history of domestic abuse against a partner.

On October 2, 2025, police observed him interacting with users. A search of his home revealed a 43.2-gram block of cocaine valued at £4,300, weighing scales, small plastic bags, and £998 in cash. He had been on remand for three months prior to sentencing.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a class A drug. Dealing to friends and work colleagues for a matter of weeks due to own cocaine addiction to avoid debt. Worked offshore for ten years and wants to care for disabled dad. Job held open upon release.
Ben Rooney

On October 19, 2025, in Windermere Avenue, Stockton, after his brother was arrested for alleged paedophile offences ensnared by a vigilante group using a decoy, Ben Rooney, 36, received a panicked call from his mother who felt scared due to threats from the vigilante crowd outside. The group was using racial abuse, throwing things, and one had a metal pole; a fence was pulled down and someone had a cricket bat. Rooney, who had been drinking with friends, returned home, felt in fear, and came out holding an air rifle by his side to confront them in a shouting match. His cousin gave him the baton. Mobile footage showed he kept the rifle down. He stashed the weapons under his bed upon hearing police and was arrested by armed police within the hour.
Pleaded guilty to possession of an air weapon with intent to cause fear. Ordered to attend 20 rehabilitation sessions and carry out 250 hours of unpaid work. Also put under an alcohol monitoring order for 4 months. Judge noted he was intoxicated and held the rifle beyond the boundary of his house. Has prior convictions for theft, arson, handling stolen goods, and criminal damage, but kept out of trouble for 18 years. Was under the influence of cocaine and had been drinking.
Connor Ryan

Connor Ryan, 27, of Hammond Drive in Darlington, travelled to a house on Cowper Road in the Tilery area of Stockton in a stolen Citroen C4 fitted with false number plates on May 23. He got out of the car and fired a homemade slam gun without warning at three people standing outside the front door. The group ran inside, and the car drove off. Four minutes later, the car returned but the group stayed indoors and it left. Three minutes after that, the car returned again, stopped, and Ryan fired a second shot at the house before speeding away. This was a targeted attack against the occupants. No one was injured. The car was later found abandoned, Ryan's jacket with gunshot residue was stashed in a bush, and the gun along with four shotgun cartridges was found in a bag on Headlam Court.
Cleared of attempted murder but found guilty of two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life; admitted possession of a prohibited weapon. Previous convictions for battery and robbery. Served three years in a Young Offenders' Institution at age 18. Under influence of drink and drugs at the time. Judge noted high risk of causing serious harm and acknowledged some remorse.

On November 19, 2022, in Middlesbrough, Keelin Hackleton, part of a mob outside the victim's home, shouted threats and stabbed the victim four times (abdomen, buttock, and two on back) after the victim was accused of inappropriate behaviour with a woman. The attack also involved a baseball bat, causing perforation of the small bowel and liver, requiring surgery. Hackleton was identified by facial tattoo and identity parade.

Luke Boyce, 25, from Darlington, breached a sexual harm prevention order by viewing the victim's social media and telephoning her to say she looked 'mint'. Officers found four bags of cannabis at his residence on Emmanuel Close. The victim felt frightened to be at home alone as a result.

Liam Bowes, aged 37, drank between eight and 10 pints as well as shots at a 50th birthday party before driving home in a friend's Volkswagen Golf. He was speeding through the streets of Durham, ran a red light, and smashed into 22-year-old Durham University student Abigail Eggleston who was crossing the A167 at Neville's Cross on October 26, 2025. He failed to stop, continued driving, and later burned out the car in an attempt to destroy evidence. He was arrested at the home he shared with his mother in Kelloe, County Durham.
Admitted causing death by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, driving without insurance, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Banned from driving for 18 years and required to sit an extended re-test.

Ebony Watt, 18, of Stone Row in Skinningrove, who was pregnant at the time, hosted the initial disagreement with a girl that led to the attack on a 17-year-old boy by four teenagers in the early hours of April 29, 2025, in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, and was found guilty of perverting the course of justice in relation to the incident.

Marc Dalkin
Sexual abuse of a child and attempted rape of a child *

Marc Dalkin, 47, of Shannon Crescent in Stockton, sexually abused a child over 20 years ago, including attempting to rape the child. The victim reported the abuse years later to the police. Dalkin denied the offences, leading to a trial where the victim had to relive the events. The abuse ruined the victim's life for Dalkin's perverted sexual gratification.
Denied offences but convicted by jury. Judge Tony Hawks commented on the catastrophic consequences of the abuse and that Dalkin continued to deny his offences. Made subject of a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and indefinite restraining order prohibiting contact with victim.

Mateusz Rucinski, 23, of no fixed address, a self-confessed loner, downloaded 27 category A images/videos and 28 photos of children as young as three being abused, including animal abuse, in 2024. He messaged a decoy posing as a 12-year-old girl asking if she wanted to get pregnant, requested nudes, and arranged a meeting before getting cold feet.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images, possession of extreme pornography, attempted sexual communications with a child, and attempting to cause a child under 13 to engage in a sexual act. Made subject of lifelong sexual harm prevention order and sex offenders register for life.

Mustafaa Hussain, 27, of Finchlay Court, Middlesbrough, was stuck in a slowing line of traffic and could not see the moped on the other side of the road, when he decided to overtake. He crashed into Mark Coleman's red Honda moped head on on Riverside Park Road on November 23, 2023. Mark Coleman died from head injuries sustained in the crash three days later.
Banned from driving for seven years and five months. Caused death by dangerous driving.

Jessica Douglas, 33, of Hartington Road in Stockton, committed a series of thefts including stealing a bulging bag of vapes and mobile phone covers from a market stall outside Cooplands in Stockton on June 28, 2024, threatening the stall-holder with 'I've got a knife' during confrontation; stole £147 jacket from Trespass in Wellington Square on October 21, 2023; £46 meat from Asda on Bath Lane on January 3, 2024; £400 tracksuits from JD Sports at Teesside Park. Found with crack cocaine on arrest in October 2023; kicked officer in chest while trying to swallow drugs in November 2023. In 2020, assaulted sister with vodka bottle during Christmas visit, causing eyebrow cut.

She fled to a neighbour's, called 999, and he followed, later hiding under a sofa. He tried to discard the knife on CCTV. History of domestic violence noted.

Rhys Johnston, 26, from Stockton, sexually abused two children when he was school-aged, and over a decade later abused and took indecent photos of a third child. He admitted being a risk and accessing child pornography. Police found 32 indecent images and one video on his phone.

Sam Hanley, 32, previously of Brusselton Court, Stockton, after drinking wine and eating takeaway on January 5, 2026, antagonised his mother during a row. She hit him first, but he kicked her repeatedly, pulled her hair, and strangled her until she began losing consciousness and screamed for help. A neighbour's arrival distracted him; she escaped by smashing a window, shouting 'he's killing me'.
Pleaded guilty to assault and intentional strangulation. Prior convictions for criminal damage to mother's property and assaulting an emergency worker.

Darren McGee, 45, of Danby Grove, Thornaby, a builder, on April 6, 2023, squeezed a police officer's testicles while being handcuffed for stealing cameras from a building, causing severe pain; he fled and hid on a garage roof. On June 9, 2023, while on bail, he punched a man on Dovecot Street, Stockton, pulled him down, stamped on his head, and slashed him from right shoulder to left hip with a Stanley knife found with the victim's blood at his home.
Pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker and wounding with intent, accepting history between him and the slashing victim. Sentenced by Judge Nathan Adams.

CCTV showed her entering the flat the next day.

Anthony Dale, 44, of Borough Road, Middlesbrough, followed a student across Teesside University's campus around midnight on November 26, 2025, put a butter knife to the back of his neck, and demanded money. The student had no cash, pushed him away, and surprisingly offered help for Dale's homelessness claim. Dale was caught on CCTV and arrested the same day with the knife found in his home.

William Cash
Assault and strangulation of emergency worker *

William Cash, 38, of Middlesbrough, became volatile when police responded to a concern for safety at his address in the early hours of Boxing Day 2024. He kicked an officer trying to detain him, bit the officer twice during a scuffle, put him in a headlock twice and choked him, and threatened to use his Alsatian dog as a weapon against officers.
Admitted assaulting and strangling the officer.
Lewis Adams

Lewis Adams, 33, of Cringle Moor Chase, Great Broughton, met the victim on the day of the attack at her Middlesbrough home. After being asked to leave, he refused and in a drug-fuelled frenzy, used a hammer to damage walls, a knife to slash sofas, repeatedly kicked and punched her, strangled her several times, and doused her in paint and ammonia, damaging every room including her child's bedroom. The victim suffered a bleed on the brain, 11 fractures including eight ribs, nose, clavicles and sternum, internal lung injuries, and blistering, requiring two weeks in hospital.
Found guilty by jury of section 18 wounding with intent and intentional strangulation after denying charges. Sentenced by Recorder Ayesha Smart who described the attack as unprovoked on a woman he barely knew.

Craig Pollock, 37, of Highbank Road, Ormesby, Middlesbrough, on November 5, 2025, at 6.40pm, intending suicide, took his mother's BMW keys, revved the engine with door open, knocked over a woman intervening, sped swerving, hit a pensioner crossing at Cargo Fleet Lane junction causing exposed skull bone and serious injuries, crashed into another car on Ormesby Road, and fled until detained.
Pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Disqualified from driving for 5 years.

Geoffrey Vanes, 40, of Windermere Road, Hartlepool, with Michael Barclay, targeted a man on August 1, 2025, at a Derwent Street house in Hartlepool town centre. Barclay climbed in via drainpipe; Vanes kicked the door and entered. Victim fell from upstairs window, suffering dislocated elbow, shoulder, and two spinal fractures. Gang kicked and stamped on him; Vanes struck him three times with a weapon, Barclay squirted liquid in his face. Involved two women and another man; arrived on bikes.
Pleaded guilty to affray and possession of an offensive weapon (denied it was a hammer). Initial GBH charge dropped due to lack of evidence on injury cause.

George Bellwood, 34, formerly of Darlington, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court in February 2026 for sexually assaulting a girl under 13 on multiple occasions when he was aged 16 to 18. He was found guilty of five further counts of sexual assault following a new report from a survivor. Bellwood had previously been convicted in 2024 and sentenced to 21 years for a series of grave sexual offences, including multiple rapes and sexual assaults of a child. The survivor described the profound and lasting trauma of the abuse. A restraining order was also imposed.

Josh Bradley, 21, of Dalwood Court, Hemlington, Middlesbrough, accosted a cyclist on Fonteyn Court on August 11, 2025, hit him, picked up a knife that fell from the victim's waistband, and stabbed him in the buttocks and thigh. The attack was captured on CCTV, showing the victim holding onto a fence after being stabbed.
Pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. Sentenced by Judge Nathan Adams.

On December 5, 2025, he confronted the same victim and friend in a subway, demanded and received £20 via ATM after threats, also taking a cigarette.

Thomas Corner, 27, of Stanley, County Durham, filmed himself engaging in sexual activity in front of young children aged between two and four years old, encouraging at least one child to join in. He possessed a number of disgusting videos on his phone, including indecent images of children. He was arrested after concerns about his behaviour were raised with police, and his phone was seized, leading to the discovery of the videos.
Admitted four counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, one count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 13, and one count of making indecent images of children. Also handed a sexual harm prevention order. Described by Detective Constable Hanna Liddle as one of the worst offenders she has encountered.

He led police on a high-speed chase along the A66 at speeds up to 110mph, accelerating away when signalled to stop, driving through red lights, and crashing through a fence before abandoning the car in a Lidl supermarket car park on Cargo Fleet Lane. The vehicle had been stolen from outside the victim's home days earlier. Later that day, he returned to the supermarket in a grey Skoda (without licence or insurance) to retrieve his phone, which he had thrown onto the roof during the chase. He was arrested days later. This was his second similar incident in three years.

Upon return to the UK, she sought treatment at the University Hospital of North Tees.

During the pursuit through York city centre, he drove at high speeds, ran red lights, mounted the pavement endangering pedestrians, and crashed into another vehicle causing £300 damage. He was blocked in a cul-de-sac, abandoned the car, and fled on foot but was quickly arrested. Oakley tested positive for cocaine and was disqualified from driving until May 2027.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and drug driving. Banned from driving for 61 months, ordered to take an extended driving test, and pay a victim surcharge of £187.

Ricky Banthorpe, 38, a scaffolder from Cliffland Way in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, assaulted a heavily pregnant woman after an early morning argument at a family home. He had insisted on staying after an argument and refused to leave when asked again at 7am early last year. He punched her in the left temple, left ear, and back of the head while her youngest child was nearby and her older child stood beside her. The victim suffered bleeding in her skull and required treatment at North Tees Hospital. The following morning, she spotted him in her garden, called police, and he was found hiding in the shed. He also breached a domestic abuse protection order from September last year by appearing at another woman's home in October while under the influence of drink and drugs. He has a previous conviction for domestic violence on Christmas Day 2017, where he grabbed a former partner by the throat and punched her. The assault occurred while intoxicated, and he remembers little of it.
Admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breaching a domestic abuse protection order. Two restraining orders imposed for five years. Prior conviction for domestic violence. Expressed apologies to victim. Knows it's immediate custody. No desire to engage with help for substance misuse.
