Stephen McHugh, intoxicated on cocaine and alcohol, deliberately drove his Volvo S60 into a crowd of pedestrians on Willow Street in Oswestry, Shropshire, at about 2.45am on Sunday October 9, 2022, after an altercation near the Grill Out takeaway. Bystander Rebecca Steer, 22, was crushed underneath the vehicle and died of catastrophic injuries. McHugh, who had no driving licence, was attempting to frighten the group following verbal abuse about his driving. He was arrested on October 10, 2022, in Gobowen, Shropshire.
Admitted manslaughter and assault but was convicted of murder and attempting to wound. Judge commented on his erratic driving, intoxication, and lack of driving licence. Ordered destruction of the vehicle.

He then broke into Aimee's family home through the back window, kicked her mother to the floor, and stamped on her head. These assaults on Aimee's family occurred on the day he was due in court for charges related to violence against Aimee.

On 22 August 2019, after an argument at Mr Chergat's home in Sandon Street, Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, Martyn stabbed the victim while Street sent threatening text messages. Street and Martyn disposed of the victim's mobile phones in a storm drain at 1.30am, captured on CCTV. Phone and DNA evidence linked them to the crime.
Found guilty following a trial on 5 October. Also pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis, receiving concurrent sentence of 9 months.
Lewis Crofts

Lewis Crofts, 30, of Broadstone, Dorset, stabbed his ex-partner Kimberley Deakin, 29, multiple times to the face, neck, and chest at her home in Leigh Street, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, on 6 November 2020. Police were called by a neighbour just before 4.40pm. Kimberley died just under two hours later at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. Witnesses reported a man speeding away in Kimberley’s Vauxhall Corsa, which was located by police in Northampton that evening with Crofts as the sole occupant. There were blood stains on his hands, clothes, and inside the vehicle.
Admitted to killing Kimberley at her home on Leigh Street on 6 November 2020 at an earlier hearing.

Ben Hunt

On 15 May 2019, at about 2pm, Ben Hunt, 32, and a colleague were working at a garage in Speedwall Street, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, when they heard the alarm of an Audi activate outside. A man called Christopher Walters, 25, had picked up a sledgehammer and was causing damage to the Audi. Hunt and his colleague ran after Mr Walters, who was still carrying the hammer. They chased him along Wood Street to a grassy area, some 400 metres from the garage, where they caught up with him. The men took Mr Walters to the ground and restrained him using a neck restraint. A number of people witnessed the incident. Police attended, and body-worn camera footage showed Mr Walters still held in the neck restraint. He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead just after 4pm. The post mortem found the cause of death to be due to compression of the neck, with deep bruising from the left shoulder to the chest, bruising to the nose and face, and abrasions to the arms and hands. Hunt claimed in interview that his reaction was reasonable force used in self-defence.
Pleaded guilty to the offence in an earlier hearing on 5 March. The force used to restrain the victim was excessive and went on for a long time, leading to his death.

Joshua Daniel Twigg stole a Vauxhall Insignia from the victim's place of work in the Uttoxeter area between 2.30pm and 3pm on 8 February 2021. On 10 February 2021, at about 1.55pm, Staffordshire Police joined a cross-border pursuit initiated by Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire forces after the vehicle was spotted in Nottinghamshire and failed to stop on the M1. The pursuit involved speeds up to 120mph and dangerous driving, continuing through Derbyshire, across the Staffordshire border, along the A50 towards Stoke, then to Draycott-in-the-Moors, Cheadle Road, and ending on Harplow Lane in Cheadle where Twigg was detained while fleeing.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving; found guilty of taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. Ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £156. No extra penalties for driving while disqualified and driving without valid insurance.

Kenneth Andrew McDermid unlawfully killed 71-year-old Ann Wendy Morse at her home in Tunstall Road, Knypersley, on or around 19 March 2020. McDermid had been introduced to Wendy as a handyman and was carrying out improvement works to her home in the weeks prior to her death. He was at her address on Thursday 19 March 2020 and she was not seen or heard from since that date. Wendy was found dead just after 7pm on Sunday 22 March 2020. McDermid fled to Sweden following the death and was arrested by authorities there on Friday 27 March 2020. CCTV footage, phone data, and witness evidence confirmed his involvement. There was no clear animosity between the two, and the exact instigation of the attack may never be known.
Pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. Suffered from a complex form of mental illness prior to and at the time of the offence. Known also as Kyle McKenzie.

Sexual grooming and possession of indecent images of children *

Yohann Ramchelawon, a 30-year-old man born in Mauritius, posed as a young Justin Bieber look-alike online using bogus profiles on Instagram, WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook to groom schoolgirls aged 12 to 17 from Coventry and across the UK, including Manchester, Lanark in Scotland, Liverpool, St Ives, Shoreham-by-Sea, and East Ham in London, as well as abroad. He steered conversations to intimate subjects, requested naked images, and coerced some victims into performing sex acts on webcams by threatening to share the images with their friends and family. Additionally, he was convicted of penetration and sexual assault against a six-year-old girl in Coventry in October 2016. The investigation began after an IP address linked to messages sent to a 12-year-old Manchester girl was traced to a house in Walsall, leading to his arrest on March 6, 2017, in Huddersfield, where hundreds of indecent images were found on his devices.
Convicted of two counts of inciting a 12-year-old girl to engage in sex acts online, eight charges of possessing indecent images of children, two of distributing the images, and penetration and sexual assault against a six-year-old girl.

Jamie Reynolds murdered 17-year-old Georgia Williams at his parents' home in Wellington, Shropshire, on May 26, 2013. He lured her there under the pretense of a photo shoot, strangled her using a noose he had prepared, and watched her die. He then stripped her body, took photographs, dumped her remains in woodland near Wrexham, and went on the run before being arrested in Glasgow. Reynolds had a long-standing obsession with violent pornography and had written graphic stories and scripts detailing the murder in advance. He had prior warnings from police for assaulting another girl in 2008.
Pleaded guilty to murder. Judge stated he posed a grave risk to women and was too dangerous to ever be freed. Described as a scripted, sadistic and sexually-motivated murder.

Maurice Johnson

On February 10, 1991, Maurice Johnson attacked his four-month-old son David Johnson, causing a traumatic head injury that resulted in cerebral palsy and other life-changing conditions. The injuries were non-accidental and included at least three separate skull fractures. David was admitted to hospital on that date and never fully recovered. Maurice was convicted following a trial.
Pleaded not guilty. Defence claimed the child fell off his knee while feeding, but prosecution argued injuries indicated a sustained attack with at least three separate skull fractures.

David Whitefield ran Whitefield Properties which had branches in Milton, Leek and Crewe. Over a four-year period he pocketed the rent and deposits paid by tenants rather than passing on the cash to landlords or deposit protection schemes. Whitefield Properties collapsed into administration in 2014, owing more than £198,000. An investigation found the 44-year-old made 1,200 payments totalling £123,000. Staff were ordered to tell landlords he was out if they called demanding their missing rent.
Pleaded guilty to fraudulent trading and two counts of fraud. Banned from being a company director for five years. Victims criticised the sentence as lenient.

Amar Tasaddiq Hussain, aged 29 from Birmingham, sparked a major national security alert by making a hoax 999 call on December 8, 2014, falsely claiming a Muslim West Midlands Police colleague was going to be kidnapped. The call, made amid a severe national terrorism threat level, caused fears of a Lee Rigby-style attack, leading to an unprecedented police response to protect officers and staff. Counter-terrorism detectives initially arrested a suspect, but evidence including voice analysis linked Hussain to the call. The plot stemmed from a grudge against colleagues from an Islamic community organisation, following a prior false report of a forced marriage in September 2014. Hussain conspired with Adil Bashir and Muhammad Ali Sheikh, who bought a phone with his money to send a WhatsApp message discrediting the colleagues.
