On June 1, 2013, just after midnight, Martin Cain followed a woman from Maidenhead Station as she walked home along Shoppenhangers Road. Outside Fredrick's Hotel, he ran towards her, placed his hand over her mouth and his other arm around her, and pulled her into an alleyway while speaking in a soft, creepy voice. The victim screamed and struggled, managing to break free and run home. Police tracked Cain with a dog and arrested him the next day. CCTV showed he had been on the same train, and forensic evidence confirmed contact between their clothing. He pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial. The victim suffered flashbacks and anxiety. Cain had previous convictions for indecent assaults on five women in 1986.

Justin Hawkins, a 54-year-old from Newbury, Berkshire, was initially sentenced at Reading Magistrates’ Court in May to a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after a sting operation by paedophile hunters. Believing he was communicating with a young girl named 'Sophie', Hawkins sent explicit videos of himself, expressed love, and asked her to keep their interactions secret from her mother. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register and made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) that banned him from using certain online chat apps and required him to declare any online aliases. Within months, routine police checks revealed he had twice visited forbidden chat apps and used an undisclosed alias. On 8 December 2025, at Reading Crown Court, Hawkins admitted the breaches. His defence counsel argued for bail, noting his previous compliance with the suspended sentence and time already spent in custody, but Judge Amjad Nawaz denied bail and adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports. Hawkins was remanded into immediate custody and subsequently received a 1-year custodial sentence.

On 12 April 2017, at around 10.20pm, Kapil Dogra grabbed a woman in her late teens as she left Datchet railway station. He dragged her to a wooded area near the junction of Major Farms Road, Ditton Road, and London Road, where he raped and sexually assaulted her. Dogra admitted in court that he was in the area to buy Class A drugs. He was arrested on 18 April 2017 and charged the following day. The trial lasted five days, ending on 2 October.

The offences took place in 1980 and 1981 involving two victims, both boys aged 11-13 at the time. The incidents happened on school trips to Reading, London, Ross-on-Wye, and also at Imeson’s residence. He was a teacher at Reading Blue Coat School.

Jomo Mathurine, a 49-year-old consultant gynaecologist at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, secretly filmed himself having sex with a student nurse using glasses equipped with a hidden camera. The relationship began in 2016 while the victim was a placement student. In her Reading flat, he recorded a 40-minute sex video without her knowledge. In October 2018, the victim confronted him; Mathurine threatened to share the video and report her for degree work assistance, effectively blackmailing her. He also filmed other hospital staff. After arrest, detectives found 15 still images and 96 video clips of the victim. He resided in Twinflower, Milton Keynes.

Jonathan Goldsmith, 52, of Whitchurch Hill, Oxfordshire, was found guilty of seven counts of rape involving three women and one count of blackmail following a trial at Reading Crown Court. He raped one victim at knifepoint in a car in London in 2002. He subjected another woman, whom he first met in Oxford, to multiple rapes between 2005 and 2019. He met his third victim on a dating site in 2014, attacked and raped her, leaving her injured.

Jordan Adewale, 23, raped a 19-year-old woman while she was sleepwalking in a property in Burnham just after 1am on 7 February 2017. The victim had gone to bed but sleepwalked into the kitchen, where Adewale brutally raped her while she was unconscious. She woke up and raised the alarm. Adewale was arrested at the scene but denied the crime. Forensic evidence was overwhelming.

Laurens Brand murdered his wife Angela Mittal in their home on Parker Close, Shinfield, on Boxing Day. He stabbed her 59 times in the neck and chest, causing instant death. He then called the police without requesting an ambulance and attempted to clean up the scene before making the call. He pleaded guilty to murder at Reading Crown Court on 22 March.

He formed a disturbing online relationship with the 13-year-old, discussing plans to meet and repeatedly urging her to engage in sexual activity, though they never met. He sent explicit sexual messages to the 15-year-old and discussed meeting her. The 13-year-old's mother discovered the messages on her daughter's iPad and alerted police. The 15-year-old stopped contact herself. Lucas was arrested in May 2017 and charged in February 2019. He pleaded guilty to inciting the two underage girls to engage in sexual activity.

He had been a director of the All Star Football Academy in Maidenhead since 2018 and previously worked as a ticketing executive for Reading Football Club for 11 months.

On 2 June 2013, Glenn Nelson attacked Krishnamaya Mabo while she was picking nettles in a wooded area near her home in Arborfield, Berkshire. He had set out that day armed with a knife and with the deliberate intention of finding a woman to rape. He attempted to rape Mrs Mabo and, when she resisted, murdered her by asphyxiation to prevent her from identifying him. Her body was found the following day, and Nelson was arrested the same day after a search of his caravan yielded crucial evidence. He pleaded guilty to both offences at Reading Crown Court.

On a date in March 2022, Barry O'Sullivan, 45, was driving his grey Ford work van along the M4 smart motorway at a speed between 74 and 80mph. A Nissan Micra driven by Pulvinder Dhillon's daughter had become stationary in the fast lane for six minutes due to a breakdown. Vital safety alerts on the smart motorway were not functioning, failing to warn drivers. CCTV footage showed O'Sullivan crashing into the back of the Micra, causing a fiery pile-up. Passenger Pulvinder Dhillon, 68, died from her injuries. O'Sullivan told police he felt alert and saw no warnings, and thought the Nissan was moving. He braked too late to avoid the collision.
Found guilty of causing death by careless driving. O'Sullivan was driving between 74 and 80mph on a smart motorway when he crashed into a stationary Nissan Micra, killing passenger Pulvinder Dhillon. The smart motorway's safety alert systems were not working. O'Sullivan suffered serious injuries in the crash, leaving him walking with sticks and unable to work. The judge took into account the impact of a driving ban on his ability to work.

The victim woke to find Rutledge sitting on his bed, who told him he had been ‘chosen’ before molesting and raping him. Rutledge told the boy to keep it secret as practice for priesthood.

In March 2021 in Berkshire, Andrew Kirkland crept into a seven-year-old girl's bedroom at night, pulled down her bed sheets and performed a sex act over her while she was ostensibly asleep. Traces of his semen were found on the child's pyjamas, sheets and nightie after her mother suspected him and handed items to police. DNA evidence strongly supported his involvement. Internet searches on his phone included pornographic content on entering bed with sleeping person.
Found guilty by unanimous jury verdict after four-day trial. Former Metropolitan Police officer dismissed in 2014 for theft and fraud. Ordered to sign Sex Offenders' Register for life. Sexual Harm Prevention Order application to be adjusted later. Judge noted victim's vulnerability and young age.
Amber Roderick

On 3 April 2011, Amber Roderick, along with Joseph Lawrence and Patrick Maughan, subjected a 16-year-old girl in Reading to sexual abuse. The victim was plied with alcohol before being raped and abused. The incident involved force and multiple perpetrators. The case was tried at Reading Crown Court in December 2011, and the jury convicted all three defendants. Sentencing occurred on 19 January 2012, where Roderick received an indeterminate sentence.
Convicted after trial. Judge John Reddihough described the crimes as 'horrendous' due to use of force and multiple perpetrators. The victim was plied with alcohol.
Alexander Clarke
Causing death by dangerous driving *

On 3 January 2019, Clarke drove a silver Ford Transit van while disqualified and nearly twice the legal alcohol limit. He had spent the evening drinking with passenger William Seymour at the Black Horse pub in Emmer Green. At around 10:30pm on Wood Lane, he crashed into parked cars and a wall. Mr Seymour suffered severe head injuries and died two days later in hospital.
Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. Already banned from driving due to a previous collision; nearly twice the legal alcohol limit. Received an additional 4 months for driving while disqualified, to run concurrently. Also banned from driving for 5 years, extended by 3 years until passing an extended driving test.
Ade Jerry

On 24 March 2018, at approximately 3:30am, Ade Jerry sexually assaulted a woman in her twenties inside a property on Friar Street, Reading. The assault involved penetration. He was found guilty after a trial that concluded on 7 February 2024, and was sentenced at Reading Crown Court.

Adrian Thomas

Life imprisonment with minimum term of 23 to 27 years
Adrian Thomas, a drug dealer, believed Mary-Ann Leneghan or her friend had set him up for a robbery and assault in April 2005. On 6 May 2005, he and five other men kidnapped Leneghan and her friend from a pub in Reading, forced them into a car boot, and drove them to the Abbey House Hotel. At the hotel, the victims were raped, drugged, scalded, and beaten for several hours. The girls were then driven to Prospect Park, where Leneghan was stabbed 40 times, sustaining a fatal neck wound. Her friend was shot in the head but survived.
Found guilty of murder, attempted murder, kidnap, assault and rape.
Philip John Saunders

Philip John Saunders, a convicted paedophile, was found guilty of multiple historical sex offences against a boy aged 13 to 15 between 1982 and 1985. Saunders was the boyfriend of the victim's older sister and subjected him to repeated sexual abuse at the family home in Twickenham. He threatened and assaulted the victim to ensure silence while also giving expensive gifts to manipulate him. The victim was later moved to a children's home, but Saunders continued abuse by visiting him there and taking him out, including an incident at Wembley Stadium. The victim reported the abuse to police in the 1980s, but the case made little progress. Years later, the victim located Saunders himself after police failed to identify him. Saunders was arrested in Aylesham, Kent, and convicted at Reading Crown Court in October 2023.
Convicted of four counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, and one count of attempted buggery. The judge described the convictions as representative of 'innumerable' instances of abuse and praised the victim as an honest and composed witness. Saunders had prior convictions for sex offences in the Netherlands (1990) and Kent (2005).
