Graham Pipes, described by police as an 'opportunistic sexual predator', was sentenced for two serious sexual offences spanning decades. The first incident occurred in summer 2009 at the Leisure Lakes campsite in Tarleton, Preston. A 21-year-old man awoke to find Pipes sexually assaulting him while he slept, leaving the victim deeply traumatised. The victim remained silent for over five years before reporting the assault in October 2014. The second offence dates back to 1985, when Pipes raped a seven-year-old boy he was babysitting. Pipes repeatedly denied the historic crime for years, pleading guilty only in October 2015 shortly before sentencing. The sentencing took place at Preston Crown Court.

Police visited his home on Church Terrace on 20 February 2023 and seized three devices. Analysis found 1,804 images and videos, including 798 Category A, 463 Category B, and 543 Category C. Forensic examination uncovered search terms targeting children as young as seven, and he had attempted to purchase a sex doll. He claimed he viewed the material out of curiosity and that he had downloaded and deleted the images.

Admitted viewing material but claimed curiosity. Mitigation highlighted loss of three children and wife, and drug addiction. Recorder Cavanagh emphasised the real victims behind the images.

Delwyn Savigar, 35, from Preston, was convicted for a series of violent sexual offences against schoolgirls in the Preston area between 1999 and 2002, and for operating an online platform for sharing child sexual abuse material. On 30 April 2002, he raped a 13‑year‑old girl walking to school in Penwortham, forcing her down an embankment and assaulting her. Earlier, on 13 April 2002, he attempted to rape another 13‑year‑old girl in Much Hoole but she escaped. In April 1999, he indecently assaulted a 16‑year‑old girl in Walton le Dale. His crimes came to light after a DNA match from a 2008 arrest for possessing over 300,000 indecent images of children. He administered a members‑only bulletin board for up to 1,500 paedophiles, which led to an international investigation and 545 arrests worldwide. He pleaded guilty at earlier hearings to spare victims from testifying.

Pleaded guilty to all charges. Judge Edward Slinger described him as 'a very dangerous man indeed' and noted the long‑term trauma to victims. Extended licence for 10 years post‑release.

The exploitation was uncovered in November 2018 when the victim sought help in a shop in Burnley, leading to an investigation by Lancashire Police. Calin was arrested and admitted the offences.

Despite her attempts to distance herself, he harassed her with persistent unwanted texts and appeared at locations where she was socialising. In May 2025, during a barbecue, Lloyd entered a room, exposed his penis, and poked it towards the victim's face, touching her cheek. He later threatened to strangle her and attempted to place his hands around her neck. In a final incident outside her home, he grabbed her by the hair, smashed a wine bottle, and held the broken glass to her face. The victim described feeling manipulated and controlled, suffering deep emotional and psychological impact. Lloyd's harassment escalated over several months and included inappropriate comments and violent threats.

Pleaded guilty on the first day of trial to charges of making threats to kill, sexual assault, harassment, and threatening a person with a bladed article. Judge Richard Archer stated Lloyd showed no genuine remorse and minimised his actions. Mitigating factors included diagnoses of bipolar disorder and personality disorder, and engagement in prison recovery programmes.

On 26 August 2023, Austin Duckworth breached his bail conditions and forced his way into the home of his father Stephen Duckworth on St George’s Road, Preston. He repeatedly punched his father to the head, causing a devastating brain bleed. Stephen initially declined medical attention but later called an ambulance and was found to have blunt force head trauma. He died on 12 October 2023. Austin Duckworth, 37, of no fixed address, was found guilty of murder after a five-day trial at Preston Crown Court. On 16 April 2024, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years.

She used a bank card provided by the charity for work equipment to order products for her business. The theft was discovered in March 2010, leading to her dismissal. The charity faced closure due to her theft and local authority funding cuts.

Pleaded guilty to fraud. Given 12 months supervision.

Brendan Harris

Murder *

life imprisonment with minimum of 18 years

On 11 August 2007, Brendan Harris, then 15, along with Ryan Herbert and three others, attacked Sophie Lancaster and Robert Maltby in Stubbylee Park, Bacup. Harris beat Lancaster unconscious and repeatedly kicked and stamped on her head, causing fatal head injuries. She died 13 days later. The attack was unprovoked and motivated by the victims' gothic appearance.

Pleaded not guilty to murder but found guilty. Judge Anthony Russell QC described the attack as 'feral thuggery' and said the defendants' behaviour 'degrades humanity itself'.

On 17 May 2020, Aya Hachem, a law student at the University of Salford, was killed in a drive-by shooting on King Street in Blackburn. The shooting was a planned hit ordered by Feroz Suleman, a tyre business manager, targeting rival businessman Pachah Khan. Hachem was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. The defendant was involved in the conspiracy.

Convicted of murder on 3 August 2021 after a 12-week trial. Played a part in the planned drive-by shooting that killed Aya Hachem.

Adil Khan

Robbery, attempted robbery, and possession of a knife *

Adil Khan, 20, together with Mustafa Safi, carried out a series of knife-point robberies in Preston and Chorley over four days in November. On 10 November at the Premier Store on Avenham Lane, Preston, Safi threatened staff with a knife while Khan stole around £500 cash and 70 packets of cigarettes. On 12 November, they attempted to rob Vanikas on Langton Road but fled empty-handed after staff resisted. On 13 November, at Best One on Pall Mall, Chorley, Khan kept watch while Safi used a knife to take about £200. Minutes later, they attempted to rob One Stop on Brindle Street, Chorley, but were foiled by a customer. Police later found knives in a nearby bin with DNA linking both men. They were arrested in Kent on 20 November.

Pleaded guilty to robbery, attempted robbery, and possession of knives in public. The judge emphasised the seriousness of the offences, citing the use of weapons and the threat posed to shop staff.

Adrian Matei

Adrian Matei, 34, from Longworth Street in Preston, Lancashire, trafficked two 18-year-old Romanian women to the UK under false pretences, promising them jobs as hotel maids. Upon arrival, they were confined to a brothel on Longworth Street and forced into prostitution. The case was uncovered after Lancashire Police received an anonymous tweet on 27 July 2015 alerting them to possible underage girls at the brothel. A raid revealed the women had been in the country for just two weeks. Matei, along with Marius Petre and Ionut Ion, controlled the women's movements and profited from their forced labour. He was found guilty of two counts of rape, causing prostitution for financial gain, and human trafficking. The offences involved threats of harm to the victims and their families.

Aidan Thompson

Misconduct in public office and outraging public decency *

Aidan Thompson, a 35-year-old married constable with Greater Manchester Police, was jailed for secretly filming women and girls without their consent. On 6 October 2015, he stalked a 17-year-old girl for up to 40 minutes in the TK Maxx store in Manchester's Arndale Centre, using a camera concealed inside a plastic bag to film up her skirt. He also secretly filmed a sexual assault victim's thighs while on duty, and police later found a cache of surreptitious footage on his computer, including women in changing rooms and girls in tight trousers. None of the victims were aware they had been filmed.

Pleaded guilty to two counts of misconduct in public office and outraging public decency. Judge Mark Brown said his conduct undermined public confidence in police. He was a serving Greater Manchester Police constable, suspended, and expected to be dismissed.

Alexander Caple, of Helston Close, Burnley, BB11, groped a 14-year-old girl over her clothing before carrying out a more serious sexual attack. He told her not to tell anyone or they would put him in prison. She informed a schoolfriend and her mother, leading to his arrest. He confessed to some sexual activity with her.

Admitted to two offences of sexual activity with a child. An indecent exposure offence, which he denied, was withdrawn after the prosecution offered no evidence. 12-year sexual harm prevention order imposed.

Alex Tattersall-Derbyshire, 28, of Woodbury Avenue, Blackburn, was part of the gang that supplied cocaine across East Lancashire using a WhatsApp group called "The Firm".
