He then stole a metal motorcycle chain and used it to smash the windows of several parked cars in the Nyewood Lane area. When police arrived, he continued to wield the chain, threatened to kill a police officer, and kicked a police dog. He was arrested after a struggle during which he was bitten by a police dog.
Pleaded guilty to 14 counts of criminal damage, resisting arrest, causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, theft from a motor vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon, threats to kill and a public order offence. He was drunk and aggressive, and showed no remorse.

On Saturday 8 June 2024, Lee Alan Kneller forced his way into a residence on Vian Road in Waterlooville, Hampshire, sexually assaulted a female carer in her 40s, demanded money, and stole her handbag before fleeing. Rachael Cole, 44, of Warren Close, Whitehill, committed 26 offences between July 4 and December 12, 2024, including 20 counts of shoplifting from stores such as Liphook Sainsbury’s, B&M Bordon, Tesco Fleet, Tesco, Waitrose, and Marks & Spencer in Haslemere, with total value of goods stolen just under £5,000. She also had four counts of failing to surrender to bail and one count each of driving while unfit through alcohol and assaulting a police officer after a car accident in Bramley near Guildford on October 29, 2024. Breath test showed 33 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath (limit 35). Behaviour suggested possible influence of other substances. Admitted all offences on January 10, 2025, at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court. Has been in custody since at least January 10, 2025.
Pleaded guilty to all offences. Judge impressed with pre-sentence report and progress in prison. Banned from driving for a year. First review on March 25. 26 previous convictions. Equivalent of eight weeks in custody credited.

He communicated with operational managers like Danny Venning and coordinated the supply chain from Liverpool. The gang was dismantled through a joint police investigation, resulting in seizures of 4kg of drugs, over £30,000 in cash, and weapons.

On January 24, 2025, Max Anderson drove his BMW on Kennel Road near Goodwood, overtook a bus in single lane traffic, lost control, skidded to the wrong side of the road, struck a road sign and embankment, and collided head-on with another vehicle. The victim, Donald Sutherland, 68, died five days later from his injuries. Anderson had 79 microgrammes of benzoylecgonine per litre of blood, exceeding the legal limit, and had previously been advised not to drive due to drug taking.
Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Collision occurred after cocaine-fuelled overtaking of a bus. Disqualified from driving for nine years with extended retest requirement.
Oliver Smith

On the morning of Friday, September 27, 2024, Oliver Smith waited in the Deadwater Valley area of Bordon for the teenage victim or another as she walked to school. Smith approached her, threatened her with a boxcutter, saying 'Shush, shut up, you're coming with me,' and forced her to a remote area. Smith forced the victim to strip and sexually assaulted her, including rape and attempted rape. Smith then took her to a river, filled a bottle with water, and ordered her to wash away DNA traces. After the attack, Smith fled by train to Mallaig in the Scottish Highlands before being apprehended by Police Scotland and returned to Hampshire.
Pleaded guilty to rape, attempted rape, false imprisonment, committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence, threatening another with a blade, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and breach of a sexual harm prevention order. Judge commented on planned and premeditated behaviour, significant risk to women, and paid tribute to victim's courage.
David Anthony Cotton

David Anthony Cotton, known as 'Big Dave', committed 28 sexual offences against ten child victims over a period exceeding 40 years, from the late 1970s to 2021. The offences took place in Havant, Denmead, Southsea, Hambledon, and Chichester. They included indecent assault on a male aged 8-15, indecency with a boy aged 8-10, indecency with a girl under 14, causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual activity with a child, and sexual assault on a male under 18. A three-year police investigation led to charges. He was tried at Portsmouth Crown Court and found guilty by a jury on 11 November 2024. He was sentenced on 22 January 2025.
Pleaded not guilty but convicted on all 28 counts. Judge described him as a prolific offender and a danger to society. Extended licence period of 5 years imposed due to dangerous offender classification. Required to sign the sex offenders register for life and made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Michael Lashley

Michael Lashley, 38, from Waterlooville, Hampshire, began a campaign of sexual abuse against a young girl when she was just three years old, escalating the severity of the offences as she grew older and became a teenager. He physically assaulted, repeatedly raped, and threatened to harm the child if she told anyone. The abuse was reported to police in April 2021 after the victim told a teacher. Following a three-year investigation, he was charged in August 2024 with four counts of raping a child, one count of sexually assaulting a child, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Denied the offences but was found guilty following a trial. Handed a restraining order and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Shahed Ahmed, director of Elite Rooms Portsmouth, managed a large number of overcrowded and unlicensed Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in Portsmouth. When council officers attempted to inspect the properties, access was refused by tenants instructed by the agency. Warrants were obtained, confirming the unlicensed and overcrowded conditions. Ahmed then harassed tenants in an attempt to evict them.
Admitted multiple indictments under the Protection of Eviction Act 1977 as well as managing unlicensed HMOs, and failure to comply with HMO management regulations. Also ordered to pay a £114 victim surcharge for the harassment and eviction offences.

He acted as a conduit for certain customers, including primary conduit for Ryan Lafferty, a courier who made trips to London, Weston-Super-Mare and Kent for drugs. Adrian Jason Cribb, a 35-year-old resident of Green Crescent, Gosport, Hampshire, initiated a sexual relationship with a child under 16, committing offences against her between April 2021 and May 2022. He was charged with and convicted of five counts: engaging in digital penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15, engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15, engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15 on at least five other occasions, and two counts of rape of a woman aged 16 or over. Following a trial, a jury at Portsmouth Crown Court returned unanimous guilty verdicts on 5 September 2024.
Found guilty by unanimous jury verdict. Also given a 5-year extended licence period, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order with lifelong conditions, an indefinite restraining order, and required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life. The judge commended the bravery of the complainant and the intermediary.
Daniel Paddon

Between August and November 2023, Daniel Paddon placed a tracking device on his victim’s car, showed up at her address and refused to leave, kicked her door in and sent many abusive messages, including threatening to harm her and her family and sending pin locations showing that he was outside her family’s homes. The victim reported feeling hopeless and so frightened that she boarded her house up with planks of wood.
Pleaded not guilty, found guilty by a jury after an eight-day trial. Restraining order granted preventing contact with victim and excluding him from her address.

Dean Cunningham subjected his girlfriend to over a year of physical and verbal violence and controlling behaviour, including dictating what she wore, ate, and medication she took. He attacked her multiple times, including intentional suffocation, and was arrested in January 2024 after a disturbance in Bosham. While on court bail, he sent threatening messages and voice notes to force her to withdraw her statement. He was charged with intentional suffocation, actual bodily harm, perverting the course of justice, and controlling and coercive behaviour. He pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court.
Pleaded guilty. Also handed a ten-year restraining order against the victim. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Cobbett commented on the case.

Hayley Bell and Richard Elkin ran Elkin and Bell Funerals in Gosport, Hampshire, where they stored over 40 bodies in unrefrigerated conditions between June 28, 2022, and December 10, 2023, leading to decomposition. Bodies were found covered in maggots, shedding skin, and lying in fluids. Specifically, 87-year-old William Mitchell's body was left decomposed for 36 days in a mortuary at 11.48C (above recommended 4C), discovered by enforcement agents due to unpaid rent. The pair lied to families about cremations, continued fraudulent trading, and ignored improvement notices from August 2021. Five other cases of badly decomposed bodies were known. Another victim, Patricia Williams, was found in such poor condition she had to be frozen.

He handled physical drugs under direction from Grant Canavan, including collection, delivery and supply. Arrested on 18 June 2021 in possession of two kilograms of cocaine and four and a half kilograms of cannabis in a backpack, with a further two kilograms of ketamine, cutting agents and a mixing paddle at his home.

After his brother Dean's arrest, he instructed and directed Saul Francis and John Oliver to collect, accept delivery, supply, store and adulterate controlled drugs at his rented flat on London Road in Portsmouth. On 18 June 2021, police seized items consistent with drug adulteration and packaging, including nearly four kilograms of amphetamine, and arrested him at Sparsholt Road with £21,037 cash, a deal list documenting £250,000 debts.

Dean Canavan, 45, of Serpentine Road, Waterlooville, led a Portsmouth-based Organised Crime Group (OCG) responsible for supplying at least 60 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kilograms of amphetamine, 7 kilograms of ketamine and 7 kilograms of cannabis across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight between April 2019 and June 2021. Between March and June 2020, he used EncroChat to arrange the supply of at least five kilograms of cocaine and five kilograms of ketamine in exchange for large sums of cash. Messages referenced him owning 50 litres of amphetamine oil. He managed the handling of physical drugs via his brother Grant, Saul Francis and John Oliver, and arranged meetings with Aron Pucci to exchange large amounts of cash. Arrested on 1 July 2020 following seizure of £56,590 cash, and again on 23 June 2021.

Natalie Harris, a 36-year-old mother from Waterlooville, groomed two 13-year-old boys via Snapchat in November 2022, sending sexual messages and saving one boy's contact under a female name. She invited them to her home and engaged in sexual activity with both boys in her son's bedroom for around 40 minutes. A video filmed by one boy circulated at their school in January 2023, leading to a police investigation. Harris was identified through hand tattoos in the video and incriminating messages on her phone. She initially denied involvement but pleaded guilty to four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. Sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on 15 August 2024, she received four years in prison, a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a 10-year restraining order. The judge highlighted the profound harm caused to the victims.

On October 26, 2021, at about 8.10pm on the A286 Main Road at Birdham, Chichester, Varndell drove a Vauxhall Zafira dangerously while distracted by making texts and calls seconds before striking cyclist David Breen, who was cycling home with lights on. Varndell then failed to stop. Mr Breen, aged 26, died at the scene. Varndell was also not insured to drive the vehicle.
Found guilty by jury. Distracted by using mobile phone for texts and calls before collision. Failed to stop at scene. Not insured to drive. Disqualified from driving for 8 years with requirement to complete extended test.

Daniel Prenga
Possession with intent to supply a Class A drug *

On Saturday 23 April 2024, at approximately 12.25am, officers stopped a vehicle driven erratically and speeding along Eastern Road. A search of Daniel Prenga and the vehicle under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 located Class A drugs, £195 in cash, and a number of mobile phones. A subsequent search of a connected address under Section 18 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act revealed a significant quantity of Class A drugs, two mobile phones, seven sim cards, £2580 in cash, and drugs paraphernalia. Prenga was charged on Sunday 24 April.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a Class A drug at an earlier court hearing in May. Forfeiture of seized cash ordered, as well as destruction of drugs and phones.
Teejay Scott

Teejay Scott stabbed a 28-year-old woman six times near Walpole Park in Gosport following an altercation on Gosport High Street in the early hours of Sunday, July 28, 2024. The victim managed to call for help and was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, where she underwent surgery for her injuries, which were not life-threatening.
Admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife. Detective Constable Ethan Beesley commented that the sentence sends a clear message against violence against women and girls and knife crime in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Jordan William Ruston

Jordan William Ruston, 25, of Howe Road, committed multiple burglaries. Overnight on June 29-30, 2023, he entered a flat at the Anchorage in Gosport, stealing electronics and a bank card. On July 2, 2023, he burgled two properties on Tukes Avenue and one on Brookers Lane, taking electronics equipment and bank cards. He was linked to these crimes via a gifted Nintendo Switch and other evidence. Separately, on November 4, 2024, he broke into a house on Village Close, stealing a purse; took jewellery from a property on Gosport Road in Stubbington; stole rings and airsoft equipment from St Nicholas Avenue; and on the following night, stole electronics, bank cards, a knife from Totland Road, and electronics, jewellery, and a moped from Magennis Road. The moped was later found dumped in a pond near his home. He also possessed offensive weapons, including a knuckle duster and telescopic baton, at his home address.
Admitted to nine offences, linked through DNA evidence and usage of bank cards. A forfeiture order was made for the weapons.

In the early hours of Saturday 9 October 2021, following a night out in the city centre, the victim, a 22-year-old woman, was raped by Samuel Belstone, a man unknown to her, in an outdoor area she was not familiar with in Portsmouth. The incident was reported to police at 8.30am on the same morning, leading to an investigation by specialist officers. Extensive CCTV enquiries and forensic analysis identified Belstone, who was arrested and charged with two counts of rape.
Found guilty following a trial in April this year. Initially denied the offence.

Arnaldo Katalay participated in a courier fraud scheme that targeted two elderly women. In May 2023, an 88-year-old woman from Hertfordshire was deceived by scammers posing as police officers, leading her to hand over her bank cards, which were later used for unauthorised transactions totalling £1,500. In August 2023, an 89-year-old woman from Portsmouth was tricked into withdrawing £3,500 and handing it over to a courier, with Katalay involved in collecting the money and bank cards.
Admitted offences of fraud by false representation and acquiring/using/possessing criminal property. Involved in a courier fraud scheme targeting elderly women.
Mohan Babu

Mohan Babu, a 47-year-old GP, abused his position of trust by sexually assaulting female patients during routine medical appointments at a surgery in the Havant area of Portsmouth, Hampshire, between September 2019 and July 2021. The assaults involved groping, kissing without consent, asking patients to remove clothing unnecessarily, non-consensual intimate touching, and prolonged hugs. Victims were unknown to each other and reported separately, revealing a pattern of offending. One victim had terminal cancer and passed away before conviction; her evidence was admitted to the jury. Evidence from five other complainants was also admitted via bad character application.
Convicted on four counts of sexual assault against three women. Received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Found not guilty on three counts against two other women.
Michael Norman Smith

Michael Norman Smith, aged 58, sexually assaulted a boy between 1997 and 2003, beginning when the child was under the age of 10. Smith, who lived at Willow Way in Sandown at the time of the offences, would often have children over to his address and allow them to play computer games. He would also take them to do activities such as swimming or going to the cinema. After the abuse, the boy would be given money, sweets or other food and drink items by Smith. In 2019, police were contacted by a man who stated that Smith had sexually abused him at the Willow Way address during this period when he was a child.
Initially denied the offences but changed plea to guilty part way through the trial on 9 February. Remanded in custody following plea.

Edward George Waller, a former history teacher at St Anne’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College in Southampton, sexually abused a female pupil aged 16 to 17 during his tenure. He gave her his mobile number, sent sexual messages including naked images of himself, and invited her to his home where sexual activity took place. The offences came to light following a 2023 investigation by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Operation Marmion.
Convicted of one count of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity while in a position of trust. Placed on the sex offender register indefinitely. Victim read a statement in court describing the lasting impact.
William Brown
Rape of a boy under 13 *

William Brown, 48, from Pinner, groomed and sexually abused two boys in Hampshire. He targeted an 11-year-old boy in Portsmouth in September 2023 and abused a seven-year-old boy in Port Solent in 2020. An investigation was launched based on reports, leading to his conviction.
Pleaded guilty to rape of a boy under 13, two counts of causing or inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity, two counts of sexually assaulting a boy under 13, and grooming. Given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Detective Sergeant Jo Smith commended the victims' bravery and the investigative team's work.

Simon Parker, aged 31, from Havant, was spotted driving a stolen Mini Cooper in the early hours of 28 January 2022. Police attempted to stop him at a petrol station in Rowlands Castle. He deliberately reversed into the police car to avoid arrest, causing substantial damage and narrowly avoiding trapping an officer's foot. During the pursuit, he drove dangerously, including wrong way around a roundabout, wrong side of the road and mounting the pavement. He reversed into the police car again at speed, injuring two officers. Upon arrest, he was found in possession of amphetamine, cannabis and Tramadol.
Pleaded guilty to nine offences including dangerous driving, two counts of assaulting emergency workers, criminal damage, taking a conveyance without authority, driving whilst disqualified and three drug offences. Disqualified from driving for 39 months and required to take an extended re-test. Admitted other offences taken into consideration including multiple instances of taking vehicles without consent, handling stolen registration plates, making off without payment for fuel, theft and shoplifting.

David Fuller murdered Wendy Knell, 25, and Caroline Pierce, 20, in separate attacks in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1987. He sexually assaulted Ms Knell's body after her death and dumped Ms Pierce's body in a ditch. Additionally, between 2007 and 2020, he abused corpses in hospital mortuaries, filming himself interfering with the bodies of deceased women, including unidentified victims, while working as an electrician.
Admitted to killing two women and abusing corpses; prior convictions for burglaries; sentenced after pleading guilty.

On 11 February 2020, Rhys Curtis and co-defendant Max Plaister entered a house on Selsey Avenue, woke the known occupants, searched the house whilst making demands for property, and stole around £3,000 worth of jewellery and some trainers. In a separate incident on 5 November 2020, Curtis drove a Ford Fiesta under the influence of cannabis, colliding with a BMW, a Vauxhall Astra, and subsequently a house on Varos Close, causing significant structural damage. He fled the scene but was arrested later that night.
Pleaded guilty to burglary. Admitted to driving offences including driving whilst under the influence of cannabis. Handed a 21 month driving ban.

On 12 March 2021, 19-year-old Harvey Osborne attacked a man in his 20s, known to him, in his sleep at an address in Triumph Close, Fareham, stabbing him and causing wounds to his head, face, and fingers. Police arrived at 3.07am and found Osborne armed with a knife and a wooden pole. He became violent and threatening towards officers, locked himself in the toilet, and smashed a window before being arrested by public order trained officers.
Pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent and affray. Ordered to pay £156 victim surcharge.
