Specifically, 87-year-old William Mitchell's body was left decomposed for 36 days in a mortuary at 11.48C (above recommended 4C), discovered by enforcement agents due to unpaid rent. The pair lied to families about cremations, continued fraudulent trading, and ignored improvement notices from August 2021. Five other cases of badly decomposed bodies were known. Another victim, Patricia Williams, was found in such poor condition she had to be frozen.

He handled physical drugs under direction from Grant Canavan, including collection, delivery and supply.
Pleaded not guilty and was convicted after a four-week trial of conspiracy to supply cocaine and ketamine and participating in the activities of an Organised Crime Group.

He handled physical drugs under direction from Grant Canavan, including collection, delivery and supply. Arrested on 18 June 2021 in possession of two kilograms of cocaine and four and a half kilograms of cannabis in a backpack, with a further two kilograms of ketamine, cutting agents and a mixing paddle at his home.
Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine, amphetamine, ketamine and cannabis and possessing a prohibited weapon.

Grant Canavan, 38, of Sparsholt Road, Southampton, was involved in the Portsmouth-based OCG supplying large quantities of cocaine, amphetamine, ketamine and cannabis across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight between April 2019 and June 2021. After his brother Dean's arrest, he instructed and directed Saul Francis and John Oliver to collect, accept delivery, supply, store and adulterate controlled drugs at his rented flat on London Road in Portsmouth. On 18 June 2021, police seized items consistent with drug adulteration and packaging, including nearly four kilograms of amphetamine, and arrested him at Sparsholt Road with £21,037 cash, a deal list documenting £250,000 debts.

Dean Canavan, 45, of Serpentine Road, Waterlooville, led a Portsmouth-based Organised Crime Group (OCG) responsible for supplying at least 60 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kilograms of amphetamine, 7 kilograms of ketamine and 7 kilograms of cannabis across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight between April 2019 and June 2021. Between March and June 2020, he used EncroChat to arrange the supply of at least five kilograms of cocaine and five kilograms of ketamine in exchange for large sums of cash. Messages referenced him owning 50 litres of amphetamine oil. He managed the handling of physical drugs via his brother Grant, Saul Francis and John Oliver, and arranged meetings with Aron Pucci to exchange large amounts of cash. Arrested on 1 July 2020 following seizure of £56,590 cash, and again on 23 June 2021.

On Saturday 23 April 2024, at approximately 12.25am, officers stopped a vehicle driven erratically and speeding along Eastern Road. A search of Daniel Prenga and the vehicle under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 located Class A drugs, £195 in cash, and a number of mobile phones. A subsequent search of a connected address under Section 18 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act revealed a significant quantity of Class A drugs, two mobile phones, seven sim cards, £2580 in cash, and drugs paraphernalia. Prenga was charged on Sunday 24 April.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a Class A drug at an earlier court hearing in May. Forfeiture of seized cash ordered, as well as destruction of drugs and phones.

Teejay Scott stabbed a 28-year-old woman six times near Walpole Park in Gosport following an altercation on Gosport High Street in the early hours of Sunday, July 28, 2024. The victim managed to call for help and was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, where she underwent surgery for her injuries, which were not life-threatening.
Admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife. Detective Constable Ethan Beesley commented that the sentence sends a clear message against violence against women and girls and knife crime in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Jordan William Ruston, 25, of Howe Road, committed multiple burglaries. Overnight on June 29-30, 2023, he entered a flat at the Anchorage in Gosport, stealing electronics and a bank card. On July 2, 2023, he burgled two properties on Tukes Avenue and one on Brookers Lane, taking electronics equipment and bank cards. He was linked to these crimes via a gifted Nintendo Switch and other evidence. Separately, on November 4, 2024, he broke into a house on Village Close, stealing a purse; took jewellery from a property on Gosport Road in Stubbington; stole rings and airsoft equipment from St Nicholas Avenue; and on the following night, stole electronics, bank cards, a knife from Totland Road, and electronics, jewellery, and a moped from Magennis Road. The moped was later found dumped in a pond near his home. He also possessed offensive weapons, including a knuckle duster and telescopic baton, at his home address.
Admitted to nine offences, linked through DNA evidence and usage of bank cards. A forfeiture order was made for the weapons.

In the early hours of Saturday 9 October 2021, following a night out in the city centre, the victim, a 22-year-old woman, was raped by Samuel Belstone, a man unknown to her, in an outdoor area she was not familiar with in Portsmouth. The incident was reported to police at 8.30am on the same morning, leading to an investigation by specialist officers. Extensive CCTV enquiries and forensic analysis identified Belstone, who was arrested and charged with two counts of rape.
Found guilty following a trial in April this year. Initially denied the offence.

Arnaldo Katalay participated in a courier fraud scheme that targeted two elderly women. In May 2023, an 88-year-old woman from Hertfordshire was deceived by scammers posing as police officers, leading her to hand over her bank cards, which were later used for unauthorised transactions totalling £1,500. In August 2023, an 89-year-old woman from Portsmouth was tricked into withdrawing £3,500 and handing it over to a courier, with Katalay involved in collecting the money and bank cards.

Mohan Babu

Mohan Babu, a 47-year-old GP, abused his position of trust by sexually assaulting female patients during routine medical appointments at a surgery in the Havant area of Portsmouth, Hampshire, between September 2019 and July 2021. The assaults involved groping, kissing without consent, asking patients to remove clothing unnecessarily, non-consensual intimate touching, and prolonged hugs. Victims were unknown to each other and reported separately, revealing a pattern of offending. One victim had terminal cancer and passed away before conviction; her evidence was admitted to the jury. Evidence from five other complainants was also admitted via bad character application.
Convicted on four counts of sexual assault against three women. Received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Found not guilty on three counts against two other women.
Michael Norman Smith

Michael Norman Smith, aged 58, sexually assaulted a boy between 1997 and 2003, beginning when the child was under the age of 10. Smith, who lived at Willow Way in Sandown at the time of the offences, would often have children over to his address and allow them to play computer games. He would also take them to do activities such as swimming or going to the cinema. After the abuse, the boy would be given money, sweets or other food and drink items by Smith. In 2019, police were contacted by a man who stated that Smith had sexually abused him at the Willow Way address during this period when he was a child.
Initially denied the offences but changed plea to guilty part way through the trial on 9 February. Remanded in custody following plea.

Edward George Waller, a former history teacher at St Anne’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College in Southampton, sexually abused a female pupil aged 16 to 17 during his tenure. He gave her his mobile number, sent sexual messages including naked images of himself, and invited her to his home where sexual activity took place. The offences came to light following a 2023 investigation by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Operation Marmion.
Convicted of one count of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity while in a position of trust. Placed on the sex offender register indefinitely. Victim read a statement in court describing the lasting impact.
William Brown
Rape of a boy under 13 *

William Brown, 48, from Pinner, groomed and sexually abused two boys in Hampshire. He targeted an 11-year-old boy in Portsmouth in September 2023 and abused a seven-year-old boy in Port Solent in 2020. An investigation was launched based on reports, leading to his conviction.
Pleaded guilty to rape of a boy under 13, two counts of causing or inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity, two counts of sexually assaulting a boy under 13, and grooming. Given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Detective Sergeant Jo Smith commended the victims' bravery and the investigative team's work.

Simon Parker, aged 31, from Havant, was spotted driving a stolen Mini Cooper in the early hours of 28 January 2022. Police attempted to stop him at a petrol station in Rowlands Castle. He deliberately reversed into the police car to avoid arrest, causing substantial damage and narrowly avoiding trapping an officer's foot. During the pursuit, he drove dangerously, including wrong way around a roundabout, wrong side of the road and mounting the pavement. He reversed into the police car again at speed, injuring two officers. Upon arrest, he was found in possession of amphetamine, cannabis and Tramadol.
Pleaded guilty to nine offences including dangerous driving, two counts of assaulting emergency workers, criminal damage, taking a conveyance without authority, driving whilst disqualified and three drug offences. Disqualified from driving for 39 months and required to take an extended re-test. Admitted other offences taken into consideration including multiple instances of taking vehicles without consent, handling stolen registration plates, making off without payment for fuel, theft and shoplifting.

David Fuller murdered Wendy Knell, 25, and Caroline Pierce, 20, in separate attacks in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1987. He sexually assaulted Ms Knell's body after her death and dumped Ms Pierce's body in a ditch. Additionally, between 2007 and 2020, he abused corpses in hospital mortuaries, filming himself interfering with the bodies of deceased women, including unidentified victims, while working as an electrician.

On 11 February 2020, Rhys Curtis and co-defendant Max Plaister entered a house on Selsey Avenue, woke the known occupants, searched the house whilst making demands for property, and stole around £3,000 worth of jewellery and some trainers. In a separate incident on 5 November 2020, Curtis drove a Ford Fiesta under the influence of cannabis, colliding with a BMW, a Vauxhall Astra, and subsequently a house on Varos Close, causing significant structural damage. He fled the scene but was arrested later that night.
Pleaded guilty to burglary. Admitted to driving offences including driving whilst under the influence of cannabis. Handed a 21 month driving ban.

On 12 March 2021, 19-year-old Harvey Osborne attacked a man in his 20s, known to him, in his sleep at an address in Triumph Close, Fareham, stabbing him and causing wounds to his head, face, and fingers. Police arrived at 3.07am and found Osborne armed with a knife and a wooden pole. He became violent and threatening towards officers, locked himself in the toilet, and smashed a window before being arrested by public order trained officers.

Making indecent images of children *

Kevin Smith, formerly known as Ashley Corbin, aged 35, a maintenance manager from West Downs Close, Fareham, Hampshire, purchased sexual abuse footage of girls aged 12 to 16 who had been blackmailed by Abdul Elahi. He paid Elahi £295 in Amazon vouchers and £40 via PayPal on multiple occasions between March and May 2018 for the material, which included 326 videos and images stored in a Dropbox account (43 Category A, 26 Category B, 257 Category C). Additional material was found on his computers and cloud accounts, totaling 329 Category A, 604 Category B, and 4,990 Category C images and videos. Many victims were forced to state their name and age on camera. He was arrested on 28 June 2019 by NCA officers.
Also given a 10 year sexual harm prevention order. Pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

In February 2016, Kieran Cameron and Michael O’Rourke stabbed a 22-year-old man from Poole around 10 times in the stomach, neck, and back of the head. The attack was a pre-planned assault motivated by a threat from a rival gang, with the intent to kill the victim and blame the rivals. The victim was known to them. Members of the public came to the victim's aid, and he was treated at Poole Hospital.
Serving sentence for attempted murder. Detective Sergeant Jamie Halford commented that violent knife-related crime is unacceptable and the courts came down heavily on such attacks.

At 5:15pm on Tuesday 5 March officers from Portsmouth’s Priority Crime Team spotted two people acting suspiciously on the corner of Britannia Road North, suspected of waiting to purchase class A drugs. Kebba Faye was seen interacting with one of them before entering an address on Talbot Road for a matter of minutes and exiting. Officers tried to stop him in the street; he ran but was arrested. A sock containing 30-40 wraps of suspected class A drugs and £400 in cash were recovered along with a phone.
Found guilty of both offences following a four-day trial.

On 7 May 2021, police were called to an incident on Victoria Street, Gosport, involving a man with a knife at around 9.50pm. Joshua Clark, 37, of no fixed abode, was arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. On 8 October 2020, Clark, along with David Wood and Andrew Mellem, broke into the Hardway Sailing Club and The Jolly Roger pub on Priory Road in Gosport.

John Sommerville Taylor Horne, of Broadacre Place in Fareham, attacked a woman in her 20s on the footbridge over Western Way close to Fareham train station after she left Slug and Lettuce in the town at around 1am on 19 March. He threatened her before assaulting and raping her on the bridge.
Admitted the charges. Subject to notification requirements for the rest of his life. Sentenced by His Honour Judge Shepherd who commented on the prolonged and sustained course of sexual violence and its impact on the victim and community.

Shortly after midnight on April 18 2021, at The Hard Interchange in Portsmouth, Christopher Hale and Jordan Lewsley approached two men in their 30s near Gosport ferry port, became confrontational, kicked and punched the 33-year-old man in the head and face, then punched and kicked the second man who intervened, causing serious injuries including a number of broken bones to both victims.

When approached by a staff member, he pulled out a Stanley knife, showed it and told the staff member to get out of the way so he could leave. He had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of theft in September 2021 at Boots in Commercial Road, Portsmouth, stealing around £5,000 of perfumery.

Henry Thomas Henderson

On 8 September 2016, PC Tom Wyld stopped and arrested Henderson in a car in the Newport area of the Isle of Wight, along with co-accused Timothy Morgan. A search of Henderson’s address at the time in Downsview, Sandown, and Morgan’s vehicle recovered a large quantity of drugs with an estimated street value of £2million, including high purity heroin and cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, amphetamine and khat. It was suspected the drugs were set to be dealt over the Bestival weekend.
Admitted 4 counts of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply, 2 counts of possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply, and 2 counts of possession of a Class C drug with intent to supply. Fled to Spain after being bailed but returned to the UK and was charged on 30 September 2021.
Ian Hawkins

On 6 November 2021, 52-year-old Ian Hawkins of Penhale Gardens in Fareham was spotted with a knife on Fareham High Street. Police found a large kitchen knife in his rucksack while he sat on a bench outside Wilko. A witness confirmed he had just purchased the knife there and made comments suggesting he was going to ‘do some damage’ with it. Hawkins claimed he bought it for fishing.
Convicted after trial at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court. On licence at the time, having previously served a jail term for a stabbing offence.
Ian Masters

On 13 November last year, between 11.30am and 2pm, Masters broke into a property in Church Lane, Southampton, by prising open a bathroom window while the homeowners were out. An internal kitchen door was smashed with a brick, and he proceeded to smear cheese on the kitchen surfaces and stole bank letters, a laptop and a Nintendo Switch console. A fingerprint matching Masters’ was found on the bathroom window. On 16 December, between 8.10am and 2pm, a house in Brook Way, Romsey, was broken into while the occupants were out. Entry was gained by smashing a glass panel in the kitchen door with a rock. Stolen were a credit card, two debit cards, Icelandic currency worth £45, £30 in cash, two mobile phones and three gold rings, including a wedding ring. The credit card was used six times to buy items worth £135.80. The rock used to smash the door returned a DNA match to Masters and CCTV showed a man matching Masters’ appearance using the credit card.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and fraud by false representation.
Gary Phillip Saunders

On Sunday 14 March Saunders was riding on the pavement on Elm Grove when he collided with a 78-year-old man at a set of traffic lights. The man was knocked into the road and suffered a fractured wrist as a result. Saunders continued to verbally abuse the victim as he was lying in the road, before cycling away. Officers arrested Saunders and he was later charged.

Elliott Bonney entered an address in the same road, later left and got into the rear of a taxi on Fratton Road where he was arrested while trying to dismantle a Nokia phone. The phone was seized and found to hold a drug line used to send marketing messages advertising the sale of Class A drugs. Analysis confirmed drugs found were cocaine and heroin.

Fabian Silva seriously assaulted a 19-year-old man in Slindon Street, Portsmouth city centre on April 30th, stabbing him in the right arm at approximately 5.30pm. The victim was taken to Southampton General Hospital in a serious condition, put into an induced coma and underwent surgery. He has since recovered.
Found guilty after trial having denied the charges. Also convicted of possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Fahad Abbas, 39, of Haslemere Road, Southsea, and Benjamin Coates gained entry to a flat on Twyford Avenue, Portsmouth, between 7.35pm and 8.50pm on Monday 1 November, stealing jewellery worth approximately £2000, £300 in cash and a folding knife.
Previously charged with burglary, remanded into custody. Identified from CCTV footage.
David James Cowlishaw
Causing grievous bodily harm without intent *

At around 5.30pm on Sunday 26 September 2021, 31-year-old David James Cowlishaw had been arguing with a woman in her 30’s at her address in the Bridgemary area, when he grabbed a knife and threatened the woman in front of her child. Cowlishaw then stabbed the victim in the side of her left leg with the knife, leaving her with an injury which requires ongoing specialist treatment. Police and ambulance were called, but Cowlishaw gave false details over the phone and left the address before officers arrived. He was arrested the following day and subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm, and criminal damage relating to damage he had caused to the front door of the address.
Pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent and criminal damage.
Duncan Daniels

The offences first came to the attention of police in June 2019 when one of the victims reported that Daniels had touched her inappropriately on several occasions earlier that month when he was 18 and she was 14. Two days later, a second victim came forward to report that Daniels had sexually assaulted him in a number of incidents when he was just 12-years-old and again two years later when he was 14. Officers launched an investigation and Daniels was arrested and later charged.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of sexual communication with a child and one count of sexual assault on a child.
Daniel Thornton
Possessing class A drugs with intent to supply *

On 6 September, officers searched an address and a vehicle on Waverley Road, seizing a quantity of heroin, cocaine and Xanax. Daniel Thornton, 38, of Waverley Road, was arrested.
Admitted two counts of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply, and one count of possessing class C drugs with intent to supply.
Daniel Horsted
Assault on an emergency worker *

On December 9th last year, Horsted attended Fareham Police Station to make an enquiry, became verbally abusive towards front desk staff, continued to be abusive, and assaulted an officer outside the station. He also pleaded guilty to offences on September 15th 2020 in Paulsgrove, where he made racially abusive comments to a 33-year-old woman and assaulted a 69-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man at Austin Court, Portsmouth.
Pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker, racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, and two counts of assault by beating. Sentence also reflected breach of a Suspended Sentence Order issued by Portsmouth Crown Court in 2019 for criminal damage and threats with a bladed article.
Christopher Hale
Inflicting grievous bodily harm *

Shortly after midnight on April 18 2021, at The Hard Interchange in Portsmouth, Christopher Hale and Jordan Lewsley approached two men in their 30s near Gosport ferry port, became confrontational, kicked and punched the 33-year-old man in the head and face, then punched and kicked the second man who intervened, causing serious injuries including a number of broken bones to both victims.
Aged 33, of Middlefield Road in Plymouth. Found guilty of two counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Calvin Hutchinson
Conspiracy to supply Class A drugs *

Calvin Hutchinson was part of a drugs network operating between Croydon and Havant and Waterlooville known as ‘God’, active since November 2018. On 12 May 2020, warrants were executed at his home address in Rigby Close, Croydon, and a barber shop owned by the brothers in Beluah Road, Croydon. Officers seized a mobile phone used to sell drugs, £17,000 in cash, a Green Lamborghini Spyder Gallardo convertible car worth approximately £100,000 and a White Mercedes A-Class.
Previously found guilty of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and possession of criminal property.
Chay Dunning
Possession with intent to supply Class A drugs *

On March 9th 2020, officers on patrol in Havant stopped a vehicle of interest in an ongoing drugs supply investigation. Dunning, who was driving, left the vehicle and fled the scene. He was located at his home address shortly afterwards. A search uncovered £112,660 in cash, 154.7g of cocaine, 2575g of ketamine, 1197g of MDMA and 5111g of cannabis, valued at approximately £192,510. Charged with being concerned in the supply of cocaine, being concerned in the supply of ketamine, being concerned in the supply of ecstasy, being concerned in the supply of a controlled Class B drug and acquiring/using/possessing criminal property.
Pleaded guilty to a number of Class A and Class B drugs offences.
Anthony James Storr
Burglary *

Anthony James Storr, 32, of Nutfield Place, Portsmouth, committed a number of burglaries across the city in August. On Sunday 8 August a purse containing money and a bank card, which was later used, was taken from an address on Moorings Way. On Saturday 21 August a purse was taken from a salon on Fratton Road. On Wednesday 25 August a wallet containing bank cards and cash was taken from an address on Woodpath, Southsea; the bank card was later used. No-one was injured in the incidents.
Charged with one count of theft, one count of burglary other than dwelling, one count of dwelling burglary and theft, and six counts of fraud by false representation.
Adrian Thompson
Being concerned in the supply of heroin and crack cocaine *

Adrian Thompson, 35, of Little Dimocks, Balham, was identified as the main line holder for County Line ‘T’, facilitating the supply of heroin and crack cocaine in Portsmouth. On 15 December 2021, ANPR data tracked his vehicle from London to Portsmouth; officers stopped it upon entry to the city, arresting Thompson and another occupant. Five phones were found, including the ‘T’ line SIM card, 126 individual wraps of cocaine valued between £2,560 and £3,200, and two small packages of cannabis. A search of his home address revealed a large quantity of cash, drug paraphernalia and plastic bags containing razor blades. The investigation was part of Operation Orochi by Hampshire Constabulary and Metropolitan Police.
Pleaded guilty to all offences including being concerned in the supply of heroin, being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine, possession of crack cocaine with intent to supply, acquiring/possessing criminal property and possession of cannabis.
Anthony Nicholas
Class A drugs supply *

Officers conducted two search warrants at an address on Sackville Street in 2019 in connection with an investigation into the TJ drugs network operating in Portsmouth. The first search uncovered more than £2000 in cash, £1760 worth of cannabis, a significant quantity of crack cocaine and heroin as well as drug paraphernalia. Three phones were seized and analysed, one of which was the deal line for the TJ drugs network. In the second search, a second phone operating as the TJ deal line was discovered. Nicholas was arrested and later charged.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a controlled Class A drug and two counts of being concerned in supplying a controlled Class A drug.
