On 28 May 2023, RSPCA inspector Keith Hogben and World Horse Welfare field officer Tony Evans visited their farm in Trimsaran Road, Kidwelly, following reports of a lame pony and breach of ban. The couple denied ownership, providing false information about the owner and veterinary care, but later admitted ownership on 8 June 2023. Maia was removed by police and has since made a full recovery and been rehomed; the remaining ponies now belong to someone else.
Pleaded guilty to two animal welfare offences and breaching a five-year disqualification order. Ordered to pay costs of £1,000 and a victim surcharge of £128. Given 25 RAR days and placed under a 7pm to 7am curfew for four months. Further five-year ban on keeping equines.

He also stole a woman’s iPhone at Cardigan Guildhall on the same date. On February 5, he stole a bank card from a woman on Aberystwyth Road in Cardigan and used it fraudulently to buy £89.45 worth of items from Tesco.
Pleaded guilty to all charges. The court heard that O’Connell had a flagrant disregard for people and their property, and that the number and nature of the offences showed that he was operating as a professional criminal.
