Sentence: 18 weeks imprisonment, £26,805.10 in prosecution costs within 6 months, £154 surcharge, 10-year disqualification from owning and keeping animals, deprivation order for all animals
Thomas Raymond Jones of Penygraig Farm, Whitland, was sentenced for 17 offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 involving causing, permitting or failing to prevent unnecessary suffering to domestic and agricultural animals, including cattle and a dog. Investigations began in February 2024 following an anonymous complaint about a cow carcass not properly disposed of. Officers found cattle in poor conditions with no dry lying areas, inedible forage, lameness, overgrown hooves, skin conditions, and improper carcass disposal. An elderly dog was kept in a small, rubbish-filled enclosure, underweight, blind with cataracts, with overgrown nails and penile prolapse, leading to its euthanasia. Improvement notices were issued but not adequately followed; further visits revealed ongoing issues including a lame pregnant cow, untagged/unregistered cattle, thin animals, and another calf carcass. Previous complaints in 2022 noted similar problems with poor conditions, missing tags, and by-product offences.
