Between 1997 and 2000, Stuart Newbold, of Mary Close, Ibstock, near Coalville, sexually abused three children in North West Leicestershire: two boys under 14 and a girl aged 9-10. Offences: four counts of inciting a boy under 14 to commit an act of gross indecency; three counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14; two counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. Victims reported to police in 2018; now adults, they suffered immensely.
Convicted after trial (denied charges). Placed on a sexual harm prevention order for 15 years and required to register on the sex offenders register for life. Sentencing by Judge Ebrahim Mooncey, who noted defendant's age at time of offences (teens/early 20s), mild autism, mental issues, difficult upbringing, but that he knew actions were wrong. Mitigating: no further offences in 20+ years, good character otherwise.
Steven Beards

Life imprisonment with minimum term of 33 years
Steven Beards, 34, from Bloxwich in Walsall, drugged, raped, and murdered Susan Whiting, a 20-year-old student with learning difficulties, on 16 August 2015. Miss Whiting had stayed overnight at the couple's home after befriending Beards' wife. Her food was laced with the sedative Zopiclone, she was raped, and then struck on the head at least three times, causing a fractured skull. Her body was wrapped in a shower curtain and hidden under a bed. Beards initially denied the charges, claiming the sperm found was from a sample kept for donation. He was convicted at Leicester Crown Court and sentenced on 24 May 2016.
Pleaded not guilty but was convicted. Judge described him as 'a sexually motivated violent killer'.

Simon Patterson, 41, of Hinckley Road, Leicester, was a street dealer for the drug line. He was found dealing in Narborough Road on 6 September and attempted to swallow a bag of crack cocaine and heroin, but it was recovered. A search of his home revealed more drugs and cash. He pleaded guilty to two counts of being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin, and possession of criminal property.
Pleaded guilty. He was a street dealer who tried to swallow drugs at arrest. Also charged with possession of criminal property.

Sean O’Farrell, formerly of Lillington Road, Coventry, headed up the group with Thomas Higginson which supplied wholesale cocaine across parts of the Midlands. Officers found messages exchanged between Higginson and O’Farrell discussing cocaine supply. Meeting in Coventry in June 2023 delivering cocaine.
Pleaded guilty in September 2024 to conspiracy to supply class A drugs. Headed up the group supplying drugs into Leicestershire.

Sharmake Abdulahi Maxamed, a 29-year-old Swedish national and doctor working at a Warwickshire hospital, downloaded over 50 indecent images and videos of children, including 28 category A extreme files. The case came to light in July 2020 when the National Crime Agency was alerted by the Australian Federal Police about an online account linked to Maxamed receiving a folder of child abuse files. NCA officers arrested him at his home in Leicester in October 2021 and found the illegal material on his phone, along with evidence he had actively searched for such content and discussed using cocaine. He did not work directly with children and his hospital contract was terminated after the arrest.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and possession of cocaine. Judge Timothy Spencer imposed the sentence.

Sharmake Maxamed, a 29-year-old doctor from Leicester, had his phone seized during an arrest at his home on Canal Street in 2021. The device contained 50 indecent images and videos of children, including 28 Category A images. The investigation began in July 2020 when the National Crime Agency was alerted by Australian Federal Police about an online account linked to Maxamed receiving a folder with hundreds of files. A search of his home also found a small quantity of cocaine. Maxamed worked as a newly-appointed doctor in a Warwickshire hospital, but not in roles involving children, and was chaperoned at work prior to his arrest. His contract was later terminated. He admitted three counts of making indecent images of children and possession of cocaine at Leicester Magistrates' Court on 12 January 2024.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possession of cocaine. International cooperation led to his arrest. He was a doctor, contract terminated.

Ross Coleman, a former special sergeant with Northamptonshire Police, streamed and downloaded indecent images of children as young as four. He was arrested in October 2018 at his family home, where police seized electronic devices revealing extensive indecent images. At Leicester Crown Court on 20 January 2020, the court heard that Coleman had downloaded 80 indecent images of children, including 45 category A files depicting the most severe abuse of girls as young as four years old. He admitted three counts of making indecent images of children. In mitigation, it was said that financial difficulties led him to seek solace in chat sites and the illicit material. The judge suspended his one-year prison sentence for 18 months, with requirements of 120 hours of unpaid work, 35 days of rehabilitation activities, and a sexual harm prevention order restricting his internet use.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. Judge Rhona Campbell suspended the sentence due to his efforts to address his addiction, noting that his viewing created a market for exploitation. Ordered to complete 120 hours unpaid work, 35 days rehabilitation, and a sexual harm prevention order.

Lindsay Mobey, a 34-year-old woman from Nottingham, participated in the sexual abuse of a young child in collaboration with her partner, Christopher Binch. Mobey carried out the abuse, which was filmed by Binch and subsequently shared online in a child abuse group. The case was uncovered through a National Crime Agency investigation into online child exploitation. Binch's arrest on 12th March 2022 led investigators to Mobey three days later, after identifying her distinctive tattoo in the abuse video. Examination of Binch's phone confirmed the involvement of both in producing and distributing the material. In November 2023, Mobey pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a child under 13. She was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court in 2024 to two years and one month in prison and placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

Kenneth Sturgess
Indecent assault *

Kenneth Sturgess, an 87-year-old man from Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, was convicted in 2016 of historical child sex offences. In the 1980s, he befriended an 11-year-old boy in a local park and subsequently groomed and sexually abused him over several years, showing him child pornography and giving cash and gifts to ensure silence. The abuse ended when the victim turned 16, at which point Sturgess claimed he was 'too old'. The victim experienced lifelong psychological harm, including self-harm and depression. Sturgess was tried at Leicester Crown Court and convicted on six counts of indecent assault on a male, four counts of gross indecency, and one count of causing actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison, with a one-year extended licence period. Sturgess had a previous conviction for similar offences. He died in custody at HMP Rye Hill on 31 March 2026.
Pleaded not guilty but unanimously convicted by jury. Prior conviction in 2011 for similar offences against a 13-14 year old boy, resulting in six-year sentence. Judge Ebraham Mooncey described his actions as despicable. Sexual harm prevention order and lifetime sex offenders register.

Kevin Johnson, of Kate Street, Black Friars, Leicester, groomed a 15-year-old schoolgirl by paying her compliments, giving her money and sweets, before instigating sexual activity including sex and molesting her on a bench in a Leicester park on Kate Street, LE3 5RQ. The incident was filmed by a member of the public who confronted and detained him until police arrived. The victim suffered nightmares and trust issues.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of failing to attend court for sentencing. No record of similar offending. Also put on sex offender register for life, given a sexual harm prevention order and indefinite restraining order.

Nicholas McLeavey, formerly of Netherhall, Leicester, sexually abused a five-year-old girl. The abuse came to light when the child was having a conversation with her mother, who reported it to the police.

Placed on the sex offenders register for life, subject of a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years, and a 10-year restraining order prohibiting contact with prosecution witnesses including the victim.

Nathan Degia, 36, of Walpole Court, Leicester, controlled a drug line supplying crack cocaine and heroin. He was arrested at his home, where crack cocaine, heroin and cash were seized. He pleaded guilty to two counts of being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin, and possession of criminal property.

Nathan Gothard

Nathan Gothard, 37, attacked 66-year-old David Darke outside the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, on 21 December 2025, following a Christmas staff party. After being aggressive inside the pub and involved in a separate fight, Gothard struck Mr Darke with a single punch after the victim helped him to his feet, causing severe brain injuries that led to his death in hospital.
Judge William Harbage KC described the incident as a “tragic, senseless and unnecessary act of fatal violence.” Gothard was the aggressor and not acting in self-defence.

On the early hours of Wednesday September 28, 2016, in Leicester, Mauro Eric Catamo De Oliveira, a house guest after a night out partying in the city centre, crept uninvited into a sleeping university student's bedroom in her shared flat and raped her. The victim had been drinking heavily, fell asleep alone in her room while others socialised in the communal area. She awoke terrified to find him sexually assaulting her, resisted, escaped to the bathroom, and sought help. He fled the scene, remained in the UK briefly, then fled to Portugal after being charged, evading justice until recently extradited.
Convicted by jury of rape and sexual assault, which he denied claiming consent; admitted breaching bail by fleeing to Portugal. Judge Philip Head noted his arrogance, evasion of justice, and that the victim was asleep and had given no encouragement. No previous convictions. 120 days in custody awaiting extradition.

Tony Fraine, a former head of science at Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre, exploited his position to groom a 17-year-old student. Beginning in 2019, he sent flattering messages escalating to sexualised content, coerced her into sending naked images and explicit messages, and gave her underwear as a gift. The allegations were reported that year, leading to his suspension. He was tried at Leicester Crown Court and pleaded guilty to two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. In 2020, he was sentenced to two years in prison, with a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and registration on the sex offenders list for the same period. The Teaching Regulation Agency subsequently imposed a lifetime ban on his teaching.
