Philip John Smith murdered three women in Birmingham over four days in November 2000. On 8 November, he strangled 21-year-old Jodie Hyde after meeting her at the Rainbow pub in Digbeth, then set her body on fire near a recreation ground in Sparkbrook. On 11 November, he bludgeoned 25-year-old mother-of-three Rosemary Corcoran to death near Droitwich Spa in Worcestershire after meeting her at the same pub, and drove over her body. Later that day, while driving home, he hit 39-year-old care worker Carol Jordan with his car in Balsall Heath, fracturing her hip, then beat her to death. Overwhelming forensic, CCTV, and witness evidence linked him to the crimes.
Initially pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder but changed plea to guilty during trial on 17 July 2001. Sentenced the following day. Judge Rafferty highlighted the brutality of the murders and lack of motive understanding.

He was charged with 40 offences including making indecent photographs and causing children to engage in sexual activity, all of which he denied at Leicester Crown Court. Police discovered that over 60 boys had sent indecent images, with more unidentified. He was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Pony owner noticed behavioural changes in the animal beforehand. Veterinary examination cost £60; owner installed £286 CCTV. Cluley also possessed two extreme pornography images from internet. Previous offence in 2016 with different horse.

He pretended to have schizophrenia and an 'evil twin' to two victims post-assault.
